Need to find home for Sophie in SC

Hi I have a 1 1/2 yr old spayed female OES that I need to find a good home for. I adopted her from a couple in Charlotte a few mo. ago & it's just not working out. They told me she had submissive urination issues & I still agreed to adopt her. Well....I think they lied & possibly abused her. Seems like every time I get her confidence built we go through another episode of her peeing when I get leash or try to make her go into room she doesn't want to go in. Honestly I have given up w/ a baby of my own its too much for me to handle now. She never has ordinary accidents & you can leave her alone & she's fine..it's only if you do something that somehow threatens her. She's up to date on shots &hw prev. She is BEAUTIFUL! She loves children...first one to get to crib when my son cries. If anyone on here knows of someone interested let me know please. I am not selling her but I am asking an adoption fee to cover some expenses because she will come w/everything 3mo advantix, 5 mo nuheart, leash, harness, etc. etc. I would like to find her a home myself before turning her over to rescue that going to adopt her for some enormous fee when she's already been vetted etc. She just needs a devoted sheepie lover that has patience to work w/ her. I'm almost afraid to adopt her to someone that hasn't had one before because they don't realize the work involved..she needs a forever home. If this is improper to post here, I don't know, if so you have my apology in advance. Thankyou, Melissa I have lots of pics don't know how to post them on here can email them

I'm sorry to hear that things aren't working out for you & Sophie and I think you are definitely might be able to find a home for her through the forum.

As you've said, you've put some money into her, and it does sound like she needs an experienced OES home that has the time to work on her submission incontinence issues. Please don't discount your consideration into putting her with an OES rescue, they truly understand the breed. The folks that run the rescues are very skilled into finding a perfect forever home that would fit your girl's needs. The fees associated with adoption, help cover costs when another OES might have ended up in a bad situation without any vet care, grooming, etc. Rescues are not profiting by collecting fees, and they rely a lot on donations.

Please consider a good OES rescue as VerveUp mentions if you can't find just the right home. They know the breed and will do their best to place her in a home prepared to work through her submissive urination problems. And if for some reason it doesn't work out, they'll take her back rather than her being dropped off at animal control/shelter, sold in the newspaper or sold to someone else. Whoever adopts her must be determined to work through this problem. I know because for a year we dealt with what was said to be simply housetraing issues in an OES we adopted but was actually caused by to a bladder defect/ph problem.

Good luck to your kind hearted sheepie. :hearts:
Thankyou for your advice, if I can't find Sophie a good home myself I will definitely consider the rescues. She definitely deserves it. Still hoping and looking. I have uploaded some pics, waiting on getting them approved & then I'll try to find them and put them on here. Thankyou
One advantage of going through a rescue is that if things don't work out in a new home, they will take the dog back for life, just like a good breeder will. If you place her yourself, ideally you need to keep in touch with the new home and make sure it's working out. I'm not trying to discourage you - we've had cases here in WI where someone was trying to rehome a dog themselves and I've referred a rescue applicant to them because we don't have any dogs. I will tell the potential adopter to please let me know if they end up adopting the dog and especially if they have any problems, and let them know we'll be happy to help in any way we can. That hopefully adds a bit of a safety net for the dog, though, frankly, some owners who are giving their dogs up are very good about follow up themselves, which is very encouraging.

The submissive urination you describe doesn't have to, and in fact probably is not related to abuse per se -- as in the dog probably was not beaten or anything like that. Some dogs just have fundamentally fearful temperaments and then you compound that by a lack of socialization, particularly at critical stages, and it can take a long time to make them secure enough to stop doing so. Some never quite stop, but are about 95% better and never do it around people they know well. At her age, I suspect she's probably a good candidate for getting past the issue. Though it's a messy problem, of course, and one that takes time to resolve, I'd much, much rather deal with that than a fearfully aggressive dog, for example. She just needs an experienced home, and I mean someone with a lot of dog savvy, time and patience.

I've always been a little drawn to working with this type of dog because it's so incredibly rewarding to watch them blossom. But they can be hard to place because if you haven't seen that transformation for yourself, there will be times when you are hardpressed to believe it will happen. But it will. She sounds lovely.

Hi and thanks also for the advice Kristine. I believe I'm at the point of looking for rescue....I just got through chasing her all over the yard, she's scaird of me now because I scolded her rather lodly verbally last time she went in the house. Between my 16 mo. old and her it's wearing me down. I have a lady interested in her now that has great danes but I don't think that's an ideal situation for Sophie. Like you said w/ the right savy sheepie owner she will probally turn out to be wonderful. She has so many good qualities. She's total velcro, gives hugs even. But it's getting to the point that it's not fair to her or my family members the stress that she is causing w/ her issues. so........ any rescues out there interested contact me(riggimelissa@hotmail.com) I would like to talk about what her options could be. I have tried my best w/ her she has been well taken care of by me. When I got her she was on Old Roy believe it or not. She's now on Taste of the Wild, she gets regular baths and brushings which she loves, but I do believe she has some issues w/ yeast. I ordered her Malaseb shampoo and earwash and like I said she's current on shots &hw prev..so if any body out there, rather quickly would like to come and work their miracles with this baby please do so......I know if I adot her to all the people who oh and awe over her she'll probally get shuffled around again and I don't want that for her. Sorry didn't mean to vent....
it looks like you are doing the best thing that is right for her.. i know this is hard and hope she finds the right home.. try and hang in there i feel rescue is the right choice for her

Hi Thankyou Kathy. I sent you a pm as well. I also emailed you pics of Sophie to Oeslovr@aol.com(I hope that is right, it's your rescue adress right?) because I still haven't been able to do it on here. Thankyou,Melissa
Well I just noticed they are under the little camera sign..if anybody would like to see her. Thanks,Melissa
I am so glad to hear Sophie will be going to the OES rescue. After having these dogs for over 30 years I can tell you they are not for everyone. I wouldn't enjoy life without one, but they are not an easy breed. Grooming, attitude, constant bruises on the tops of your feet. Sophie will bloom with an OES savy owner, and you are not a bad person for realising that. If only all dog owners would do what is best for the dog...we wouldn't have so many rescue cases. You have made the right decision. :D
Melissa -

Just wanted to pop in and let you know how much I appreciate you allowing rescue to place your girl. She really is a beauty and it's obvious that you love her and want what's best for her. I feel sure that Kathy will be able to help you with that. She's very experienced in placing sheepies with just the right families.

Thanks so much for putting the needs of your sweet baby girl first!! Bless you!
I will be happy to pay a veterinarian for a couple of days
of boarding until OES rescue can pick Sophie up. Please
contact me if you have any problems.
I would love a chance to work with her. If we can somehow get her down here, we can definitely foster her and work with her. Our last foster came to us with submission urination issues and other issues and stayed for a few months until we got that problem under control.

I foster for OES Rescue Network Southeast and have 3 sheepies of my own for her to play with.

Whatever rescue group is taking her - if you need a foster home. I am available. I have no fosters right now.
Hi thankyou Jaci and Wynette for offering to help. Thanks to everyone also. Kathy from Carolina oes put me in touch with Marie from Dixie oes. I will be trying to find her boarding tomorrow locally until Marie comes to get her on sunday. So she will be well taken care of. I'm sorry to say I guess I just don't have as much patience as all of yall. This is truly a site with the most devoted sheepie/animal lovers possible and I knew I could find good people here and I did. Sophie I'm sure will make someone very happy, she has so much love for her people and she'll be much better off when she finds the best person suited for her. I have been so frustrated with her lately but now that it's come down to it I'm pretty sad,we will all miss her. Thanks everyone,Melissa
Melissa
You are doing the best for her.....I know you love her!
Geesh I could never, ever be a sttay at home Mom!
Marie will take the best care of your gal!
Keep in touch!
Don't beat yourself up about this. When a dog and new family come together, the match has to be right for everyone. And with a baby to care for too, you've got two unpotty trained babies in the house but the huge one is running around without a diaper!

I sincerely believe Sophie will do great with rescue.
I can't believe I missed this topic! But it's just as well! I sure hope Sophie has a wonderful life! Best of luck to her!
