This is my first expirience with this illness, and as a new mommy too, I am kind of freaking out. She sounds terrible, and I really just feel like crying right now, I feel so bad for her. We've not made it to the vet yet (It's a bit after 10:00pm CST) So my question is, when do we say enough is enough, and take her in to an overnight clinic? I'm going to try my hardest to get her an appt. tomorrow AM, but what signs should I watch for tonight? Her ears seem a bit warm (maybe it's just me being paranoid?) but she's drinking, still hasn't eaten since I brought her home, going potty regularly, and playing with her toys, between bouts of hacking. She's bringing up foamy clearish/whitish phlegm (sp?) and panting as well. From what I've read most of this sounds normal, but has anyone else been through this with any of their kids? Any help, or words of comfort would be much appreciated . ~Bailey's (concerned) Mommy |

Yes, a lot us have had this happen with our dogs. Even when they're vaccinated, it isn't always effective so dogs can still get it. What you can do until you can get to the vet is help her to make the cough productive by patting her sides when starts coughing. It should help her expectorate some of the junk in there. Try to keep her calm for now so she doesn't cough more. Once you see the vet, he'll probably just prescribe something to take the coughs more productive and maybe an antibiotic if there's a fever.Don't worry, I know it does sound a lot worse than it actually is. It's tough to have to watch them go through it, though. Good luck! |
Thank you so much for your quick response last night! That was one of the longest nights of my life :/
She's up this morning playing with her toys, still bringing up a bit of frothy stuff. Still no appointment with any of our local vets. Are there any home remedies I can use to control the cough until we make it to a vet? Thanks guys |
You can give robitussen to dogs for coughing, but if she is coughing up stuff from her chest then it's best not to give anything to stop that. It's better for it to come out than to settle in the lungs and get infected. |
I also read on a website that you can try running a hot bath and just sit with the dog on the floor and relax in the steamy room for 15-20 mins. The steam can help to ease the cough apparantly. Good Luck! |
Thanks guys! We made it to the vet this morning and she said that her chest didn't sound too bad. She's got a steriod, and an antibiotic to hopefully kick this junk out of her system. Her temp was normal too.
Thanks for all of the advice guys! |
Phew! Great news! I've been holding my breath. |
