attn: runners/joggers(aka crazy ppl)

just looking for some thoughts or habits from others who run or jog with their OES... Beckett is 6mon old now-my how the time flies! and i am getting my a** back into shape this summer!! we started from puppy with long walks but now i've left myself no more excuses on the lack of running SO i've began a run/walk/jog routine. Beckett and i hit the off leash trails by the river and he seems to love it. Not exactly sure how far i go... but i know its at least 30k about 3 times a week. (sorry to american friends i have NO IDEA how many miles that is)Trying for more times a week but, you know how it is  These adventures go usually 2-4 hours. Lots of walking, quick spurts of running and some jogging on "the way back" He still jumps all over other dogs on the trails and seems to have more energy with it than i do!
Do i ever have to worry about this affecting his hips or joints as he is still growing? Could this in any way limit his life span? heart conditions anything? He is fed 3 times a day now with half Large breed adult/half large breed puppy. I thought now that i'm adding adult food everything should be fine...
any one else ???? perhaps a lifetime of jogging/running stories? Am i the only one silly enought to force myself through the agony of it all?? 8O

i think he is still too young for that much exercise
Sorry Tera, but I agree with Kerry. That is too much exercise for the pup. 30k is about 18/19 miles.

His bones are still developing and that much exercise could cause major damage. It takes about a year for a pups bones to fully harden.

I'm a marathon runner, and would never dream of taking Oliver with me. I've heard of some breeds running the 26.2 miles, but IMO OES are not suited for that kind of distance.
He will definitely love it BUT I agree with Kerry... it's too soon for extended and repetitive activities. I think they say to wait until the dog has finished growing before... is that 14 to 18 months for this breed? Something about the bone plates. Believe me, you don't want to cause ortho problems with the hips, elbows, etc. http://oesusa.com/Panda2005.jpg

Talk with a vet that has experience with dogs with HD and elbow problems. You can also Google this online... there are several articles available. If you allow him to grow up first, he may have the best chance at being a long time running companion.
I agree too, I think you need to wait until the pup is 9-10 months so they are developed strongly.
Way too young for such endurance exercise, yes you could permantly damage his developement with the over exercising at only 6 months old.

Growth plates have not yet closed, he is still developing and you run the risk of crippling him at this tender young age.

Exercising is good, but within reason for him. Slow build up over months & months to get the muscles in his backend toned, no long distance endurance like that till well over 18 months of age, probably with how far you want to run him, I would not be doing that time or distance till at least 2 with the build up for his body to take that distance being built up slowly and progressively over that period.

Remember these are a late maturing large breed and at this age they have a long way to develope both in the bones and body.

Mature yes they make good endurance dogs for jogging with, my hubby is a marathon runner, we have a 5 month old boy that he want to run with but not till he is built up, conditioned over time, a lot older and more mature before he goes off on his 30K runs with him. He will be conditioned and taken on short runs with him, on soft surfaces like grass to protect those hips, and gradually built up to when he is about 2 to go the distance with my hubby without causing any damage to his developing body.
thanks everyone!!! something to note, is that i definatly DO NOT run the whole time. probably not even a solid 5 minutes of running at a time, so it is mostly all walking... still to long for Beckett? Or is the running part the main concern?
I think the distance is also a problem. It's hard to wait isn't it?! My puppy is nearly 1 year & I'm really looking forward to longer walks with him too! It's going to be better in the long term though.
I agree, still too long even if walking.
