Doggie sunscreen....yes, I am sunscreening my Maggie!

Maggie was cut short a couple of days ago and we wanted her to join us on the river fishing, and I don't want her to burn. So I tried some doggie sunscreen from the vet, and I have some questions. The sunscreen is really thick and I wasn't able to get it right on her skin, but her hair sure looked like it was covered! Ok, this may sound gross and I am sorry if I offend anyone, but it was like putting sunscreen on a really hairy man.....

So my questions are:
Has anyone used it? If so, what did you think?
Am I supposed to get it to her skin or is getting it all over her hair ok?
Any application suggestions? - there were generic ones on the bottle and nothing online and the product was new to the vet
Should I only concentrate on the white hair or do an all over application?

Needless to say, whatever I did worked since she didn't seem to get burned, but I want to make sure I do it right because we are outside a lot and I want my doggie to be happy and not crispy! Another thing about the sunscreen was that when we got home, she wasn't greesy at all!

Thanks,
The woman that everyone laughed at on the river as I put sunscreen on Maggie
:D

While I have never used the product you are talking about, I do use a product called Mink Oil with Sunscreen. It works great. Not only does it condition the coat but it also provides protection from the sun. It comes in a spray bottle and you just spray it on the coat. Very easy to use.
I use regular HUMAN (NO AD SPF 30) sunscreen on Tasker when he is short. It works in well because it isn't thick, does leave him a bit greasy but it works great.
Have you tried Ice on Ice? It's a conditioning spray that I read about here on the Forum and, in addition to being EXCELLENT at removing/preventing mats, it has a sunscreen. It repels dirt as well! I use it on Loki Bear and Chrissie, my Lhasa-Poo -- it cuts grooming time way down if you use it regularly and it makes their coats so soft and fluffy they look like two marshmallows. They both love it - When they see the bottle come out they run over and argue over who gets the first spritz. It's not expensive either :D That's a plus.

Ice on Ice is wonderful as a conditioner but I don't believe the sunscreen is adequate to protect the skin, I think it is mainly to protect the hair. I use it on both Tasker and Ty as a grooming product but I would not depend on it to protect delicate skin.
