I was quoted like 340 for Yuki 210 EACH for my 11lb cats and 90 to take my lil 6lb maltese on board with us Continental - Hope that is useful for anyone wanting to travel. I also read houston is the only place that has an on site boarding, overnight, and grooming in case you can't get your pet right away (whether it be a few hours or overnight) ...and then they come back to you all pretty w/o being covered in urine. How about that ..considering that's where we're going. |

marleys is the blue and white one its X large (I think) and she weighs 65 pounds. they need to be able to stand up and turn around in it. |
I would think Yuki would fit in a large plastic crate. I have a couple larges, and my big 75 pound male lab fits in it just fine. Of course, he could make himself fit in an intermediate (OK, he has!) if it meant he gets to go somewhere!
Daughter Lisa flew home on Northwest at Christmas and paid $90 for her little min pin Spike Lee to fly with her - on board too. |
Definitely check what size crate they can take on the planes and at the airports. For example, here in Harrisburg they can only take up to a 400 kennel. Suzi would probably squeak by in one but with all of Toby's hair there's no way they'd let him pass for that! The last dog I shipped had to go in a 500 kennel and flew out of BWI because of size.
When I have my 400 kennel at shows, it doesn't look like any of the other sheepdogs would fit in it. |
Wow that is expensive! And here I was complaining about the price of taking my cat to the vet for some cat dope. |
WOW!!!
Don't you have to worry about the temperature as well? I thought I had read somewhere that they won't put an animal on a plane if the temp at the destination is over a certain amount. |
I can only speak for continental, but it's temp. controlled, and animals get taken out as soon as the plane lands. They said I should have no problems landing in tx even if temps were well into the 100s!! New2sheepies once mentioned it being the same way with delta.
We plan on having a friend send our cats the next day so we can get litter pan and stuff ready. Can you imagine us moving. crate for yuki 2 carseats (one made for kids up to 80lbs, as i don't believe in transitioning to boosters so early) stroller bag for maltese laptop bag and diaper bag at least 4 luggages i get stressed thinking about how we'll fit in a car. |

You might want to look into renting a cargo van or panel truck. |
Yep, we had to get the xl. She fit in the large, but didn't look as comfortable as she did in the xl. Don't want to make our princess miserable. |
i wouldn't worry about the state she will be in when you pick her up
einy traveled from london to orlando in his crate in temp controled cargo area the plane was delayed like 3 hours 9 hour flight drop off 3 hours before flight and picked up 2-3 hours after i landed he was in the crate for 15 + hours and not one accident he was all clean. but he had a very long potty break when i finally got him out of the crate lol zoe |
I pray that's the case for yuki. We're trying to get a direct flight b/c if someone looks in once while handling her crate and says "oh, what a pretty doggie... you're so pretty." .............she'll piss everywhere. ...not to mention when the plane starts to land (the movement will make her so sick).
Either way, we plan to shave her down (which we've never ever done before), so washing her will be a cinch. We're having my mom leave towels and stuff at our new house. |
THANK GOD for good customer service. I'm going to ASSUME lil J took two of the screws that connect the two parts of the crate together. I can't find them anywhere although it is weird for lil J to take anything w/o telling me. He's kinda ...okay REALLY OCD, so if someone falls off, he ALWAYS has to tell me.
Anyway, they're sending me a new packet of them. That would have sucked to buy a new expensive crate and not be able to use it. |

I had an XXL for Tasker, so I was pretty sure the L would be too small for Yuki. The price REALLY is absurd!! For that price they ought to be sitting in the cabin with you! |

Though our friend is still available, we're now thinking of doing it all in one trip. Hopefully they'll all fit in the car and rental. So it'll be 2 cats in their crates 1 yuki & crate 1 maltese in soft bag 2 carseats 1 double stroller (assuming it's okay to take a double) trying to just do 3 large suitcases 3 carryons and a diaper bag Thank goodness we can NEVER find those carts that help you carry things at the anchorage airport ...the 4 times we've tried to find them. Grrrrrrrr! it'll be interesting. Yuki ought to be thankful her daddy wants a direct flight to shorten the time in the air since it means an additional 3 hr car ride to our destination. BTW, can't August get here sooner!!!! |
so more FYI:
If you can get Alaska Airlines, they don't have a limit on the number of pets that can travel in baggage unlike most airlines. It's temp controlled and they fly year round. It's 100 dollars per kennel no matter if it's small or XL which is a huge price difference than continental. They give you a ticket once your dog boards the plane to let you know your dog is on the plane with you. They are never left on the plane for more than 5 minutes once it lands. Don't board until 5 min before take off. Delta flat out sucks. They don't fly past 75-85 degrees but make exceptions if you get the vets approval. What the hell does that mean? I'd hate for my vet to make my exception for extreme temps when it's "normally" not allowed. I believe they quoted me 100 a kennel as well with very rude customer service. Still upset. Hope this serves as useful to someone googling one day. |

I assume alaska airlines has to have climate controlled for a reason. down here very few airlines do. we shipped cargo because one of the cargo airlines does have climate controlled - much more expensive. the pets as baggage rules are federal and I believe I have seen them on a few web links. |
Yeah, looks like Continental and Alaska Airlines are our only options. Unfortunately the second time I called Continental, they said they only take 2 in baggage area which is what I originally thought. I'm upset I was told 3 the first time I called this number. Looks like we'll have to ship the cats separately. Helpful numbers I used for pet info: aa: air cargo: 800-227-4622 frontier 800-432-1359 us airways 800-428-4322 (correct number: 888-300-0099) northwest 800-225-2525 CONTINENTAL: 800.575.3335 |
Now I'm confused -- I would have thought you would be going with Alaska Airlines? So they not fly where you need to go?
Can you get close and rent a van/minivan for the rest of the trip? |
I may not have a choice. Military will book us on the cheapest flight on their wallet. So I'm looking at options. We want direct. Continental goes direct to Houston. Houston from there has boarding at the airport. Alaska goes direct to Dallas with no boarding. If you can imagine having 2 kids already flying 10+ hours to then get bucked down to drive 3 hrs to grandmas in a car ...I'm trying to find our best option.
Right now, we're thinking of flying into houston. Then kids and I connect to grandmas. Daddy DRIVES to georgetown (our temporary free house aka his mom's winter home). Georgetown being a hop skip away from killeen so we can meet up the next day to drive back to houston to shop for furniture and leave yuki for the day (we wouldn't let our darling stay outside and my mom wouldn't let the dog enter her home for a million bucks). It's complicated. Even more if we can't get an airline who allows pets to travel. I have the appt to set it up today (military travel). Hopefully I can work something out but since it says DO NOT BRING CHILDREN and I'm bringing kids (all our friends are getting out of the military and just left the state) to this appt ...not sure how nice they'll be. |

Oh my |
I know.... *bites nails*
I wish I would have known BEFORE my husband left for the field. He just sent me the forms I have to fill out prior to the appt last night. It took us a month to get the appt. Mr. J isn't good at reading details (fine print that is in huge bold). If we don't get seen today, we may be longer than august 15th, so I have my fingers crossed. |
When is Mr. J. actually mustered out? |
oct 1st so we're hoping we get double pay (military + new job) the month of sept since he starts sept 1 |
BTW, the only way we could work it out for the military pays for it is...
husband flies by himself on delta w/maltese to houston. i fly BY MYSELF with most of luggage, kids, cats, and yuki to houston SEPARATE on continental. i continue on to grandmas w/just kids and luggage. grandma picks us up huhsband arrives at houston 2 hrs later, gets rental, eats, and then picks up animals who will be boarded in kennel (they walk them and feed them). we tried every combination and this the only option. trust me... and the last one i'm looking forward to especially since i pee so much. who the heck will hold my infant when i pee? lil j? lil j is more likely to sell his baby brother than hold him. i've got a headache thinking about it. esp since we have to pay outrageous price to board the animals just for a few hours until his plane arrives (no flight that arrives earlier than me even though he leaves 2 hrs EARLIER). |
Mrs. J, HOLY COW!!!!! You've got a lot to deal with.
1) Can you ship the luggage ahead to be picked up? 2) Have you seen the Vet to get sedatives for the pets so they snooze instead of stressing? 3) Talk to airlines to see if flight attendants can watch the kids for short times so you can pee. 4) Book the hospital bed you're going to need once you arrive? Take a DEEEEEEEEP breath. Try to take it one step at a time, get that settled and go on to the next thing. All at once it seems insurmountable but one step at a time it can be done. |
