It was so frightening to see her go through this the fit lasted between 1-2 mins and in that time she had wet herself, and also opened her bowels. She came round all very dazed and drank a bowl of water bless her. She settled back down after 10mins or so. She fitted again 6am this morning, same process.I have taken Dolly to my vets tonight who said that as she is so young the fitting would not be a result of any trauma and that she was probably born with Epilepsy. She has been prescribed Phenobarbitone twice daily and we are to go back in three weeks. Needless to say we are devastated that our ex-puppy farm little girl has so many problems, but we will be with her every step of the way. Here is a pic of my little baby:- http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m129 ... omx051.jpg http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m129 ... omx042.jpg Please keep Dolly in your prayers. Debsx |

OH NO!!!
I am sorry she is having to go thru this, Poor sweet puppy. |
I'm so sorry your little girl has this condition. Keep your other dog away from her when she's having a seizure. Natural pack instinct is to attack the one having the seizure. Let her come around naturally, she may be blind for a bit, but the sight comes back. Yes, they are tired and confused afterwards. |
Poor Dolly.....I hope she is OK...
My uncle had a shepard that was diagnosed with Epilespy at about 2 yrs old...once Lobo got used to the meds, he was fine and lived to be 15 years old. It is very frightening to watch a seizure, but know the dog is not feeling anything...no pain or discomfort-- Maybe she is disoriented when she comes out of it--- My thoughts are with you...please keep us posted... Please give Dolly a big from Heart and Pearl. |
I'm sorry. I had a Toy Poodle who was epileptic.
Personally, I wouldn't rush into putting her on medication. Phenobarbitol is a VERY strong medication and has many side effects. So please be careful. My Boxer, Roxie had two seizures at @ 3yrs old right after I got her and then never had another until old age. My Toy Poodle, Peanut that was epileptic, his seizures started at about 1 yr old. He was only on prescription seizure medication for about 6 months. Both of the Vets (in NY) I had for the two different dogs wanted me to wait and keep a journal of the seizure activity, durations etc... to see if it warranted the use of medication, before they prescribed it. The Boxer was never put on medication. The Toy Poodle was but this was only after the seizures increased from one every couple of months to 2 a month. He had such adverse effects from Phenobarbitol. He gained a ton of weight, was constantly in a drugged state and the seizures increased from one every couple of weeks to daily seizures. I stopped the Phenobarbitol because the Vet we had been seeing (here in California) was a drug pusher. He knew it wasn't working yet he just kept increasing the meds. As soon as I weaned him off the seizures decreased and went back down to one or two a month.... which was a lot easier to deal with than daily seizures that were caused by the medication. About 3 yrs later his seizures began to increase. They were coming weekly and would last about 10 to 15 minutes. I ran into a woman at the dog park and she told me about this herbal med she had gotten at the Natural Food Store. She told me that her dog had been on the medication for about 3 weeks and hadn't had a seizure since starting it. We finally tried the herbal medication which is called Bacopin and Peanut stopped having seizures completely on this stuff. |
Bless Dolly is such a sweetie, I hope she is a bit better. Will keep you in my thoughts. |
I'm very sorry to hear your baby is having seizures... it's said to be hardest
on those that have to watch. This website has a lot of info, maybe something there will help- http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/ Best wishes to Dolly... she's beautiful |
hope your dolly is doing better |
Thanks guys for all your comforting words. I am pleased to say that Dolly has been fit free for a week now since she has been on a very low dose of Phenobarbitol.
I know it is very early days, but keeping everything crossed formy littleone. Debsx |
My mom's dog seizes, and is on phenobarb. They've gotten it to less than one per month on a very low dose. Everyone is very happy with the results.
I'm glad to hear Dolly is doing well. My only advice...be patient. It often takes a long time to find just the right dose of this med (and it is fairly strong, so the lowest successful dose is always the goal). You may have to go back and forth a few times to find the right amount. Our fingers and paws are crossed for you both. |
wishing Dolly all the best |
