Short haircut for summer?

We have a 10 year old male, Buddy Boy, he is in excellent health. It gets over 100 degrees here where we live in the summers, Buddy Boy currently has about a 3" "puppy cut", should we have him shaved? Will he be cooler shaved or with this puppy cut? He lives for his am and pm walks, however even early and late its still in the 80- 90's out here. Any advice is appreciated.

Having a puppycut sounds ideal. If you shave him he will be prone to sunburn.
with 3" he will have significant undercoat - whoch can make him overheat. you can strip the undercoat to eliminate that issue.
it gets way over 100 here and i keep panda at about 3/4'' during the summer months.....the undercoat is a heat trapper! you dont want to shave super close but 1/4'' to 3/4'' is good!
Thanks for all the replies and advice, I will take him to the Groomer and ask that his puppy cut be maintained, but a bit shorter, to about 1", without being shaved. They usually groom closer to his skin on his underbelly, there its not quite shaved, so it sounds like thats the right way to continue. I am new to this site, and its great, thanks again, I will post a photo of Buddy Boy (if I can figure that out!).
We had a "heat episode" 2 weeks ago with Maggie, and let me tell you, it was NOT PRETTY! She is a lot better now, but the vet said that even though her coat is not that long (it was about an inch or so) and that she HAS to be walked multiple times a day (she refuses to go to the bathroom in our yard), it would be in her best interest to have her cut short again. So, we did. Although she was an extremely pissed off doggie when we left the groomers, she will be able to handle being outside more and won't get overheated as quickly when she comes to daddy's baseball games. One thing that we are being careful of too, is getting sunscreen on her so she won't burn when we are at the field for a game. I never would have thought that I would be putting sunscreen on my dog! Good luck!
Sorry to read of the heat episode.

Remember to be especially careful with the skin where the fur is white; the pink skin won't tolerate much sun at all.
Tasker is an "elder" and as he has gotton older he tolerates heat less and less. I keep him shaved CLOSE in the summer ( see photo). You can see the pink skin showing (recent clip). Because of his age we don't spend alot of time outside in the sun or heat of the day but while on vacation last week I did take him for a couple beach walks and used a 30 SPF sunscreen. I believe they are much more comfortable with a very short "do".

I agree with the short clips.
 when you say about the under coat I am not sure what you mean?
Thanks Ron....it was an upright - 2 legged mistake. I just wasn't thinking. It was a combination of heat (I didn't think 75 degrees was too bad), a long walk at 10 am, 2 baseball games, and a dead bird (for only 5 seconds), over 3 days that did it. Needless to say, we found out Maggie LOVES ground beef and rice and us uprights had to purchase a steam cleaner! :D

It was a lesson well learned, and another $75 for the haircut and doggie sunscreen for the rest of the summer!
