Cat question for alternative to going to the vet for pills

One of our cats is a really bad traveler. Like howling at the top of his lungs every second for 1,100 miles. It's nerve racking to say the least as he bellows like a bear.

Is there anything I can give him that doesn't require me going to the vet for a chill pill. I've called and asked about it but they won't give me any pills unless I bring him in. So that means a 45 dollar visit for them to look and say "yes he appears to be fine, here is your prescription". It just annoys the crap out of me that I am probably going to have to do this. So does anybody have an alternative to what I could give him that doesn't involve making my vet richer for an unnecessary vet visit?

is the cat just afraid of the crate in the car and thats why he cries or is it the car ride itself. You can try letting him loose in the car if you are ok with that but if he gets car sick then I wouldnt. If its a good cat you can risk it and if he wont leap all over the car as you are driving. You can also try the hormone sprays that you can get from petco or somewhere and see if that helps.
When we moved from Michigan to Florida, 1200 miles, we put Pearl in a cage in the seat between my hubby and myself and one of us always had a hand against the cage so Pearl could put her body up against us, and she did. I would talk to her and stick my finger in and pet her a bit...I was amazed at how well she did because she had never been in a car other then to the Vet's and she was an "indoor" cat. She never made a peep. Our recent move this past weekend, back into the cat carrier and she was set up front with my son and she did very well again. She had the whole new house to herself until the dogs arrived.

It doesn't sound to safe to have her out running free in the car. She needs to be confined and maybe a cloth over the cage and a piece of clothing that smells like either of you to make her feel better. We did put an article of clothing in Pearl's cage when we did the big move...just trying to give her comfort where we could.

Good luck!
Our cat hates to be confined and freaks out. He will howl if you lock him in the bedroom or the bathroom other than the whole house. If you put his pet carrier on the floor with the door open he will go in it and sleep. But if you close the door, he start bashing his nose into it and tearing at it with his claws.

On our last trip with him (1,100 miles) he made his claws bloody within an hour from clawing at the crate and his nose raw and bloody. We tried the putting your finger through the crate, just makes him scream howl louder at you. We tried letting him out, just makes him scream howl louder trying to get out of the car. We tried getting him a soft crate, he still manages to make his nose all raw by sandpapering it against the cloth in a short vet visit. We've also tried the blanket over the carrier. He has very limited brain cells.......

He weighs like 20 pounds, I wonder if I could give him like a baby teething tablet????? Isn't that what all the parents do with their kids when they are flying to make them dopey?
I would just not take him out anymore....
My cat gets really sick-vomit, poo, urine, the whole 9, and then we get out of the driveway and the real fun begins! I have found a pheramone spray called Feliway works wonders. I spray it in the carrier before putting him in, but it only lasts about 1 1/2 hours so you do have to keep updating, but it works really well! I also have it in diffusers and have solved other behavioral issues.

Lol we didn't after the first nightmare trip with him. But we are moving and have to take him with us. As my husband says "Darn do we have too?" in the background.
Sorry, forgot you were moving...

I'm not sure what to suggest other than hopefully you won't need to take him again after this LOL

I've heard feliway works for some cats.
