Can a dog wean out a sick dog?

Hello, I am curious to know anyone's thoughts on this subject. My boyfriend and I recently moved in together in fact a month ago. He has a austr. cattle dog and I had a Aust. Shephard. Our dogs got along fairly well which was our deciding factor of finally moving into together. But immediately upon moving in his dog became the dominant dog, was very aggressive to the point I began looking to rehome my dog because I feared for my dogs safety. But instead I came home from work I had only been gone 5 hrs to find my dog had already passed away. We know his dog did not physically harm him in anyway in fact we took my dog in immediately for an autopsy. My dog was healthy what went wrong? It turns out he had been born with a birth defect, he had 2 wholes in his diaphragm which caused all kinds of things to happen to him he had been sick for along time with this but he never let on I had taken him from an abusive home just over a year ago. My thing is this, Would my boyfriend's dog know this about my dog and is this why he was so aggressive to him? Was he just trying to wean him out of the pack? Or was he just asserting his role as dominant and it would have calmed down after awhile? My opinion since I know both dogs so well is he was unusually aggressive with my dog. And did having this dog in our home,... it probably added more stress onto my dog. This medical problem caused his heart and lungs to be compacted up into his chest more and squish his esophagus the tube that enables him to eat drink and breath. I welcome all thoughts on this. Please don't get me wrong as a whole both these dogs were fun loving and spoiled rotten at all times I am not mad at his dog whatsoever even if this is what he was doing. I understand it's probably their nature.

I have seen dogs in my own home who got along previouslly turn on an older or sick dog suddenly. In fact the last time it happened I made an appointment with a vet and found out the dog had cancer.
Wow. The things I learn from this site.....

Thanks for sharing your stories. I have never experienced any of that.

I have to agree with you. Geez. Our GSD that passed was a rescue and had a lot of med problems but was doing quite well. Near the end of her life Cheyenne and her would get into some very nasty scraps which never ever happened before. This explains a lot. Thank you

WOW.
Portage (a little over ten now) started messing in the house a month or two before ThePas (his littermate and lifelong bud) got very sick, and after trying everything we could medically, he passed away. Portage's anxieties were also escalating like crazy at this time.

Now, a few months later, Portage is no longer messing in the house, and we've had two thunderstorms this week with no panic attacks. I wonder if Portage was trying to tell us something, or, at the very least sensed something that scared him.

I think that it's quite possible that his dog sensed something in yours. I'm positive that was the case with our boys. (A few years back Portage ran and got me from upstairs when his brother ThePas was tangled in the cord from our blinds, and it had tightened around his neck. Theeps was in trouble when I came running down, and I followed Portage because he had come in, kicked me with a front paw, and was whining, jumping, and crying hysterically.) It was one of those "Timmy's in the well" moments you can't even begin to explain.

I'm certain they can sense things we cannot.
I am amazed at what dogs can sense. Several years ago, I had an adopted greyhound. My rescue sheltie, who previously hadn't given the greyhound the time of day, took to sniffing around her face, seeming to be very puzzled. Shortly after this started, we found a lump on the greyhound's leg, and it sadly turned out to be bone cancer.

This year, we noticed the sheltie sniffing our elderly Brittany the same way. Sure enough, within weeks that dog was diagnosed with a cancerous mass in his intestines. We lost him after a few months.

If that sheltie starts sniffing me that way, I am going to run to the doctor.
