Morgan the hog - venting

In February Morgan was diagnosed with a low thyroid. he was tow last october and is young for a diagnosis but one of the things that made me suspect thyroid was his -hmmm - tubbiness. he never was given much more food than my girl but he outweighed her by over 30 pounds. granted he is a boy and big boned but tipping the scales at 100 pounds he seems chunky to me (and I had a 125 pound male who wasn't so it isn't just the numbers)

He has been on meds since februaury - tweaked once after a blood test. He also was switched to a RAW diet which is suppossed to help keep weight down because there are no simple carbs.

Saturday we went to the vet for a f/u - HE GAINED 10 POUNDS!!!

we took more blood - this dog is supporting more than one vet's vacation fund - and will see about the thyroid levels which were still low in the last test.

This dog would eat lint if he could - he is always looking for food and never too full to eat. since he also has some CHD I need to keep his weight down - not up! He also is allergic to most forms of exercise.

AAArghh!!!!!!!!!!

Morgan wants to be a Newfoundland.

I've got a constant eater too.......I'll check the lint trap. All I can say is keep him mentally and well as physically active.....even if you have to drag his lard butt around.

Hope the meds help!
I'm sorry you are having such a hard time Kerry. Sounds like you are trying to do all the right things. :( Vent here anytime you'd like. I'll listen, just don't have any advice.
I know the feeling. At least Morgan was diagnosed with low thyroid. Sophie's numbers were in the normal range--yet she's tubby on a shorter ration than either Sherman or Archie. Plenty of exercise. I'm simply going to have to cut her back more as I am worried about health issues down the line.
Someone (I think it was Valerie) put green beans in her girls food as a way to fill her up and help her lose weight. If I wasn't so lazy I'd find the thread but I remember that it worked.
I used green beans on Glacier......and still do. She lost 60 lbs....and has gained back 10 because I got tired of opening green bean cans. But she's stable right now. She got(gets) 1/2 can in the a.m. with her food, reduced amount and the other 1/2 with her dinner. I always buy salt free since there's so dang much salt in their kibble.

Yeah I could give them to Jack to control his wanting to eat everything, but as I said, I get tired of opening cans...... He has eaten GBs willingly so if I decide to take that extra layer off him, I'll do it via GBs.
My 2 older dogs get 1/2 can no salt green beans with their 2 meals of kibble every day. This maintains their weight & fills them up. I used to feed Isaac 2 cups of kibble 2 times a day but I lowered it to 1-1/3 cups each feeding when I added the green beans. Mariah got 1-1/2 cups 2 times a day & I lowered hers to 1 cup each feeding when I added the green beans. Each lost between 5 & 8 lbs & now maintains a nice weight with this diet. It also allows me to give them 1 medium sized biscuit with each meal.

Morgan only got 3 cups of kibble a day. on raw he is at about a pound or pound and a half a day. its not intake really - it has to be metabolism.

lets see what the new $200 worth of bloodwork shows. what about your dogs in Morgan's pedigree? do they have weight issues?
