really bad hair cut. For anyone who doesnt know Im the one who took in the deaf big baby to avoid him being shot or pts. I am not a big fan of really hairy dogs (ok my bad flaw is out I really hate brushing) so my question is this. Is it ok to keep him with a shorter coat? I dont mind shedding or a quick brush through but I really dont have time to sit and just brush plus it takes both my husband and I to brush him. He just hates it at this point. |

Yup, we keep our dogs in puppy cut year round, letting it get longer in the winter.
If you are in a colder clime, consider letting it grow out a bit and using a sweater. Welcome to the forum! |
Welcome and thank you for taking in Comet. You will be rewarded ten fold with love and adoration.
In regards to the length of hair. Let me be the first, but I am sure not the last to say, the puppy cut is the way to go. First your dog looks younger, my Tyler is nearly 12 and most people think he is still a puppy. But the best part is that until it gets past about 4 inches you don't really need the daily brushing and when you do brush, the brushing is much easier on them when the hair is short. If I have to cut them in the winter months I put a sweat shirt on them to keep then a little warmer if needed. Him not liking being brushed or groomed. Make it a love fest when you do, start with short sessions full of love and pets and encouragements. He may not be able to hear, but he will know when things are good and when things are not. I have to run right now, but I am sure the rest of the forum will have plenty to add to this post and get you going on the right path to good grooming sessions. Luck and best wishes in the new year! |

OES with short hair look great and they are easy to take care. Puppy cuts are really cute and easy to maintain with a weekly brushing session. Make grooming fun with treats and praise and soon Comet will enjoy being brushed. One word of caution: If you are going the sweater route, make sure regular (weekly at least) brushing is in order or mats will develop. That happened to Sofa and we had to give her a very bad haircut |

We kept our last OES in Puppy cut year 'round too.It seems to help make an older dog feel young again! |
We live in Florida, so it makes sense to keep Samantha at a puppy cut. But we have had a few cold spells, which she loves so I am letting the fur grow out a bit. She also doesn't like getting her hair combed! |
Yep, I vote for the puppy coat year round, too. Drez doesn't like to sit still for a brushing, so about every 6-8 months, she gets cut down. She'll sit still on the table for me for the cutting reasonably well, gets a bit antsy after about 45 minutes. But it's much easier than trying to brush a dog who only wants to turn around and bite the brush! Another selling point to a shorter year-round haircut is that it's cooler for the dogs. Drez is so used to having a shorter haircut that when her hair is long enough for her trim, she pants like it's 110 degrees in the shade!
