It was John Lennon's middle name, and so, since he was my favorite Beatle... that was that. AND, I already had a son named John and a friend had a dog named Lennon... so... Anyway, when the kids would go swimming with me in the ocean, Winston would always swim out just a little further and then swim back and forth and back and forth - on patrol. It was pretty funny just to see this big, wet, shaggy head looking like those lined-up plastic ducks you shoot at for fun at a State Fair. Anyway, as soon as one of the kids decided to swim out beyond Winston, he would gently take the back of their swimsuit and swim them in to the spot where he felt it was safe for them. It was amazing to watch. He was just so wonderful with the kids. What a great dog he was. |

A Newfoundland in sheepdog clothing! He was special. Thank you for sharing. |
I've never experienced them herding in water - that's fabulous. What a hoot that would be to see.
Mine are all strong herders of the kids on land, though! Sometimes the kids get a kick out of it and make it a game, other times they just want to play their game without the interference. |
Ahhh! I love sheepie stories. Thanks for sharing. They're incredible. Winston will be my next sheepie's name. No, I don't have plans yet. |
Sounds like he was a special guy. |
Wow! That is exactly why I named my last OES Winston! After John Lennon's original middle name...my fav too. Unfortunatly my Winston's life was cut short by the pet food recall. My boy didn't do any special tricks...he was just a good boy. |
