renal failure

My Lab, Daisy, is in the animal hospital now with renal failure, she's 7 and was the picture of health until a month ago. I took her for a well visit and the vet found an ear infection and said we should test for lyme disease. It turned out she was positive. The vet put her on Doxicycline for one month. During that month, she ate very little, was lethargic and started to vomit a few times. I took her back for a follow up when I saw these symptoms and was shocked to hear she was in renal failure. They're trying to flush out her kidneys and medicate her (antibiotics~again!). They found cysts in her bladder today during an ultra sound. My question is: could this have something to do with my well water?? My last Lab died at 4 years old of pancreatis. I'm trying to figure out if there is a correlation between these two organ breakdowns. Right now, I just praying and hoping Daisy pulls through. We'll know more tomorrow. If I get her home, I want to keep her healthy. Please help! I saw a homeopathic oil for dogs with renal failure. Has anyone tried that? I think it was called Astro oil.

I'm so sorry to hear of the health problems you've been having with your dogs. :( I don't have any advice on kidney failure but please ask your vet if lyme disease can cause kidney failure.

If you're concerned about the quality of your well water, you might contact your local health department to see if it can be tested. It might help to pinpoint a problem or eliminate it as the cause of these health conditions.

I wish Daisy a full and speedy recovery :hearts:
Did your vet mention that there is a condition associated with Lyme called Lyme Nephritis (glomerulonephritis) that causes acute kidney failure? It's very serious. On the other hand, just because she tested positive for lyme doesn't mean that has to be the cause either. Just wanted to mention that. Also, I think more vets are starting to recommend a longer period of treatment; 8 weeks rather than the customary four on doxy. But probably not if she isn't tolerating it well for some other reason. I treated Belle for this four years ago and you hit it as hard as you can. Tick Born Diseases (TBDs) are notoriously vague and can be tricky to treat - often if they have one, they may also be infected by another. I don't think lethargy and vomiting is associated with doxy.

Of course, that could be a host of other things. How were her other values? We're testing Belle for lepto tomorrow just on a vague suspicion (called my vet is concerned because of all the flooding we've had) I had done routine bloodwork on her and in her case her liver values came back a bit high suggestive of some kind of inflammation. Lepto is a bit of a leap, but we want to rule it out. In her case she's asymptomatic, but I believe lepto can also cause other organ damage, including to the kidneys. Just mentioning that, especially since she's a lab. Not sure if lepto is even a concern where you live.

Hope they get whatever it is under control. :ghug: to Daisy and you.
