I don't know anything about what I'm posting so, I apologize if what I was told is wrong......... I don't have time to check it out now. Have to work on a wet basement! They said its NOT RUST on a nail that causes tetanus, it has something to do with the oil that went into processing the products!!! This is new to me. Just wanted to pass the word along, IF true. I figure I can take the word of a Red Cross Rep, ????????????? but??, ........ if your due for a tetanus shot - especially in a flooded area, GET ONE - they're FREE! |

tetnus is an infection that can live in the ground for a very long time. it is a bacterium called Clostridium tetani, which is often found in soil. really has nothing to do with the rust or the oil. the puncture that lets the bacteria in the skin can come from the nail though. |
And a tetanus shot really isn't good for ten years. If you get a cut or puncture by a possible source during the first five years, you don't need another tetanus shot. If it has been 5 - 10 years, most doctors will recommend it within the first 72 hours, "just in case."
The ten years date for a booster was chosen to make it easy to remember and to still keep the cell's memory against Clostridium tetani active. |
