Abi the Houdini

When we built our current home we made every effort to make our home "barrier free" (barrier free is a home that has modified features that allows the physically challenged complete independence and access to the entire house- PM me if you ever want to know more abt this).

A barrier free home has lever handles instead of door knobs. So instead of turning you push down. This is much easier for some.

Abi has figured out that if she stands on her rear paws, gets upright, and leans on the door with her right paw, she can then push the lever down with her left paw. She then has to, at the same time when the lever is down, push off the door so that her weight isn't pushing the door shut. The turkey bird figured this out and now can "escape" anytime she wants. This means she can get to the backyard (not a problem except for the red clay staining her fur- having a show dog is a pain in the you know what) and the frontyard which isn't fenced (big problem). Ugh! She knows that she shouldn't do this and now opens the door and sits in the doorway and looks out.

We are having to deadbolt the doors all the time. I don't really want to change the doorknobs because we occasionally will have a group which includes physically challenged individuals and they love their independence.

Noone forewarned me about the ability to open doors as a puppy issue.

I am going to try and video tape her in action. It's worth the 20 seconds.

If they include this in the agility course, we're in!

LOL this reminds me of when Beau was a puppy. We went on a trip to GA and took him with us. He was around 9 months old at the time. We stayed at a Holiday Inn outside of Fort Benning, and that motel had the same kind of handles. We had Beau in the room while we went to eat. We puppy proofed and etc BUT the little scoundrel figured out how to open the door. Luckily he didnt figure out the part of backing away from the door to get out LOL

If you would have stayed out longer he would have figured it out and visited with the other guests
Abi is just too smart for her own good!! Very cute too. I look forward to the video.
Smart, smart girl!

I had forgotten that hotel doors have the lever door knobs. Should make traveling interesting since I can't use the dead bolt. :?
Abi is not only beautiful but so smart too :clappurple:

I have a foot pedal gate and Dutch does her best to try to open it, she will bang and bang her paw down on it but so far she hasn't suceeded.

today in the back yard I thought I would see what she would do if I hid her toy, so walked around rubbing it on various things and then when she wasn't looking hid it. told her to find it and watched her look a mite confused and then I realized she can already do that LOL, I sit at the kitchen table with the patio door open and tell her ... go get your toy and off she goes outside and in a few minutes back she is with it so instead of saying find it I said go get your toy and she wandered around abit then found it . I'm so proud of my little girl
Jean, Abi does the same thing Dutch does. She LOVES to play soccer. The only way we play with her is if she has something in her mouth. If not, she cheats by nipping us away from the ball. If she initiates playing soccer (I know, I'm the one that is suppose to initiate play, but it doesn't always work out that way  ), I tell her, "go get a toy". She makes a mad dash all over looking for the first available toy. She comes back with one in her mouth which indicates she's ready to play. It is sooo funny to watch.

If Dutch ever, by accident, jumps off the fence when she's pushing the lever knob down, she'll figure it out.

Sheepies really are the best. They're so smart.

Sheepies are smart - sometimes it amazes me what they can figure out. It keeps life interesting.
the gate is in the house it is to keep her from the front door :D I don't know why but visitors don't like being greeted by a 65 lb wiggly bum jumping up on them (thats an issue I have with her ) she did jump the gate when she was younger but now she just stand up with her feet on the top rail wiggling like crazy
the problem is you all secuire the gates. we lean ours on something insubstantial - once they knock it over and it falls on their food dish they give the food grabbing monster a wide berth :)

Dutch is trouble with a Capital T :D She must have been about 4 mo there
That talented Abi! Sometimes I wish Bogie had that ability- he keeps locking himself into the bathroom at night- I guess he likes the tile floor- then he cries at dawn to be let out. Maybe I'll change the handle and see what happens.
