Though I do not have a sheepdog question, I do have a question about dogs and people around this forum seem to be somewhat intelligent in what they're talking about. I have a Boxer, 3 y/o, who was recently (w/in the last 2 weeks) developed a large pink bump on his jowls. At first it was pretty soft and now it's noticeably harder, though not a "hard lump." I do have pictures that I could show, though they are not available online, so that I can post them to this forum. I'd appreciate any help on this subject. Thanks, Chris |

Hi Chris!
Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about the lump on your boxer. There are many people on this forum that are very knowledgeable, unfortunately, me not being one of them. I will encourage you to join though (it's free, it's easy, and it's fun), and post your pictures. |
I think you should get it checked out by a vet. I hope it turns out to be nothing. |
Hi Chris better to get a Vet to look at it and assess it. Could be a multitude of things. From and ingrown hair to an abcess, cyst to whatever.
Best way without them removing the lump is to get the vet to do a needle aspirant (Biopsy), less invasive then. They pop a needle into the lump and then look at the cells under a microscope to see what sort of lump it is. That way you can get an idea if you need to just leave it alone or if it turns out to be worse surgery to remove it. Best wishes with your Boxer, hopefully it is just an abcess or cyst type of growth. |
My dogs have had many, many lumps. Old English Sheepdogs and other long haired breeds frequently have such problems.
The best advice I have for you is to go to the vet and have them do a needle aspiration. We go through it every time we find something new, and it's not terribly expensive. It can be a fat deposit, a blocked hair folicle, wart, or other things that are harmless. It can also be something more concerning. We've had one lump removed that was a bad thing, and two or three that had the potential to be bad. Sometimes just the act of taking cells from the lump with the needle shrinks it a great deal. Good luck to you. |
I like to do a warm compress and see if it changes after that. If it looks squeezable, I try put a little pressure on it to see if anything comes out. If it doesn't easily come out, I don't press it. Either way, I still go to the vet. I just enjoy the squeezing part. I'm sick like that. |
