Bug spray

There are several threads about bug spray for people, but what about for the sheepies? There are biting flies at the dog park and they drive Ralph crazy (and us). Is there anything I can put on Ralph to stop them?

He may still itch, but you won't be able to hang around him to notice.

Be cautious adding garlic to your dog's diet. Personally I wouldn't add it, but if I did I'd be sure to watch very carefully for any signs of anemia.
If they are real bad, I use the same spray I use for myself or the horses. However, I hate the stuff, so I don't use it often.
There are many non DEET/pyrethrin ones out now, so check them out. I just got a new one to try - from marigolds - yes, the flower!
I use people spray on them and then wash it off when we get home.
I could have sworn we just talked about this...

My vet said to use children's spray on them, especially in the belly and interior leg region. Just a few quirts, not to saturate the hair.

Just to put things right: I have been using garlic for years on all of my dogs, I only use the powder or granules but never raw garlic, after they have eaten you can smell it a little off their breath but they do not stink, we have very little problem with fleas ticks or anything like that. Although a lot of people in our area are complaining about ticks this year we have only had two so farm as far as I am concerned the garlic seems to work. :D :D :D
Garlic works for my dogs too, been using it for over 31 years. For ticks and fleas.

You can use a human repellant on a dog but I prefer a more anti chemical way to keep the bugs off.

Put a few drops of lavendar essential oil in a mist bottle with water and mist the dog.

Eucalyptus oil does the same thing too in a mist bottle with water and so does pyrethium (sp) oil as well.

Less chemicals and more natural alternatives is my preferance, there is enough chemical nasties in an enviroment then dabbing more onto our dogs.
When I lived in NJ I gave my dog garlic powder.
After trying just about nearly everything to keep the fleas and such off my dog I finally tried the garlic powder, (which had been recommended by my vet tech after I complained....yet again about the Flea Sprays, powders, collars, the smell...etc) I never saw another flea or tick on my dog again. 8)

Even better now.... we don't have fleas or ticks here in the Desert.
Just got back from the vet, and asked him this question. He said Advatax works as a fly/mosquito repellent as well as flea/tick. We bought 1 month of it to see what we think.
Ok, so if we try the garlic powder, how much? Ralph weighs between 65-70 pounds.
Only use garlic powder or granules, never use raw garlic on the dogs, I give my sheepies a teaspoonful of garlic three times a week and it seems to be enough, I have taken two ticks out of the dogs so far this year.

Because we visit show I also use frontline on the dogs. :D :D :D
We put the Advantax on Allie, the one that is for mosqitos. ticks and fleas every month. This last weekend we were in Northern Michigan and the Mosqitos were horrible! So I was spraying her (Lightly) with our human bug spray also. I know the Advantax is supposed to repel them, but they were landing on her every where! The bug spray seemed to help for a while. She was really freaked out, wanted to stay in the cottage most of the time. She is a city dog........
I believe the Advantix is for fleas, ticks and mosquitoes and Advantage for fleas and ticks only.

There is a product called Neem Oil that some people swear by for repelling ticks, flease and mosquitoes. I never used it so can't say for certain if it works or not.
Okay, so since I posted about the Advantex, I thought I would put an update in about it.

I HATE IT!

It turned Ollie's white hair yellow, and left it so oily. I looks like less in the tube than the Frontline Plus, but it does not evaporate very quickly, so we had it running down his back. On top of that, he has been itching non-stop since putting it on, and now his vet thinks he is allergic to it. So bath time, and back to Frontline Plus.

It's briiliant stuff. :D
I have read that an effective mosquito repellent is a small amount of baby oil mixed with water in a mister. I would use sparingly.
There seems to be somewhat of a debate about garlic. I've been keeping an eye out for any published material. I've been food comparing AGAIN and noticed that many of the higher end foods have garlic in it. I called 3 dog food manuf and spoke with their reps. One of my question was about the inclusion of garlic. All three said that they include garlic because of its benefits and it is the raw garlic that is a problem. I guess that is why Stewart always specifies that it not be raw, is that right Stewart? Didn't Kristine also just recently say that her vet recommended garlic? And if Lisaoes has been using it for 30+ yrs, well, that certainly carries weight.

I desperately need to find something that will work for fleas. They are terrible both here and in North Fl. Abi is always in my face and wondered if the garlic smell would bother me.

Lisaoes- is there a specific neem oil, lavendar oil, or eucalyptus oil, that you like? I too have gotten tired of all the chemicals I've put on Abi in an attempt to control the fleas.
