If I stripped the undercoat

How long does it take to grow back?

I wish I had known what I was doing.

It seems like it takes forever to grow undercoat back.
Marilyn's right. But if you don't plan to show her, do you really need it?

No undercoat means few mats... 8)

Back by Christmas? Just in time for winter. Perfect timing.

Kristine
Oh no...no plans of showing.

Thanks SO MUCH for the responses. She looks stragly most of the time and it STILL feels like no undercoat. ( I stripped it about 4 or 5 months ago. )So I know now it just takes long to grow back.
There's something you can do about straggly if you're at all reliable with scissors (it's well documented that I'm not permitted to own any  ) : shorten her up a bit and even her out. That will give her a fuller look. It's not how long the coat is that gives them the fluffy look.

Below is Sybil whose coat is only about 3" long and who's undercoat I strip out by the bucketload (only because her coat is still in transition and she's still matting a lot - well, it's getting better now). Because it's short, she actually looks fluffier because it stands out more, rather then being pulled down, which is what length of coat will eventually do, if that makes sense?

Not the greatest pic to illustrate my point, but the most recent:

When does the coat stop transitioning? BTW, I love the pic and your backyard w/ equipment.

That should be the last one, Kerry

In my experience (FWIW) they get progressively easier to deal with - if that's any consolation, Dee.

Well, I guess you were going to say 4! Whew!

My beloved dog "Baby" a Keeshond, had less undercoat when we lived in the South and the couple of yrs we lived in Alaska, whew my goodness, I'd never experienced so much undercoat.

Do sheepies coat adapt also?
I also don't understand, yet one more thing  , wouldn't a sheepie with stripped undercoat and longer guard hair be cooler than one with a few inches of both?

I believe they would be - I stilll strip Morgan's undercoat when his hair is short.

Oh, the great thermodynamics coat debate. 8O :sidestep:

Yeah, that seems to be the case with mine at any rate. As short as it is, because Sybil is an undercoat factory, she's gets hot more quickly than my dogs with less undercoat.

And, yes, I do think their undercoat growth is affected in some way or another by climate. My vet (also an OES breeder) mutters darkly periodically about why we (OESCA) have our national in the fall when most dogs are not in prime coat. At first I thought she meant bitches blowing coat (all of mine have eventually settled into June/Dec seasons it seems, and look like, well, not good in the fall because they will blow some coat.) But there's also the effect of going through hot summers in most areas of the country.

Kristine
One bitch that I'm showing went through coat transition a few months ago (she is 16 months old now) and to my horror lost most of her undercoat as I tried to keep her mat free.
I trimmed her down quite a bit to add fullness and kept showing her anyway, she earned 4 points through the worst of it so it wasn't as bad as I thought.
She now has undercoat filling in, but I'm definitely noticing slower undercoat growth through the hotter weeks.
Sami's hair is about 2 inchs and Blue is about 3 inchs. How long does it take to do the undercoat? How do you start? I have a brush that looks very close to a mars coat stripper brush?I am debating to shave down dor summer of just get rid of the under coat. I like the hair and they are matt free and the weather here has not been hot at all. I just do not know were or how to start.
if they ar emat free it shouldn't take long to get most of the undercoat out. I have never timed it and actually use the undercoat rake for a few minutes here and there on Morgan - he isn't exactly patient in the grooming department and he has a very heavy undercoat.

Now I bet I could strip Marley's in one grooming session if I wasn't paying attention - cause I don't want to strip hers :P
This link is of Mandy stripping undercoat during the get together in Harrisburg. http://www.lostinclouds.com/OES_strippi ... oulder.wmv

I hope it helps.
its done a little differently if you are stripping the entire coat - well it can be done differently. Mandy used a matt breaker if I remember. you can use an undercoat rake.
