If it is the one in Valdosta, I am trying to find someone to pull her. She is after all my namesake.

I live two hrs from Valdosta, could I help somehow?
We're in the Atlanta area and have a friend who has been thinking of a sheepie. Will alert him immediately.
Hey..
If your friends are serious about getting an OES, please have them go ahead and fill out an app with the appropriate rescue. Most of the OES's in Atlanta go through OESR Southeast. www.oesrescuenetwork.org

We will temperment test the dog, clean it up etc.

If your friends are interested in helping, we really need to discuss with them what it takes to be a volunteer.

We are working on the Valdosta dog, it will probably be fostered in Atlanta and if your friends are serious, they should fill out the app.

By the way..not sure if you knew it or not, we are having a sheepie night at the park on Tuesday June 17th if you want to come .. email me directly and I'll email you and evite.

Thanks, Fiona, I have passed on the info. We live in Woodstock, so getting across town after work is too much for me! We'll have to wait for the next weekend event, but thanks for the reminder.
OMG!!! 7.5 months old and in Atlanta?!? She is probably one of Tonks and Luna's littermates!!!!!! Fiona, let me know if I can help at all.
She looks a lot like your puppies, Darthsnuggle. That would be great if Betsy was adopted close to you, and turned out to be your pups' sister. You could have family reunions!

the timing on this is wierd; I got a call this morning from the owners of one of Tonks' littermates. We'd met last month (accidentally) at an Atlanta Sheepdog get together. We'd given them our contact info, and not heard from them til this morning, when they were having some trouble with Daisy and wanted some advice (seems Daisy has been a completely problem-less puppy, and Tonks and Luna have been quite the opposite!). So to hear from Daisy's parent and within an hour discover Betsy online? I think its more than coincidence! So I've emailed Betsy's listing to all our friends that love Tonks and Luna. Maybe we can have those reunions!
I would like to reiterate what Fiona said. Please let us get this dog into rescue for temperment testing, spaying, etc. Then have your friends fill out the adoption applications.

I plan on it. I've told my friends that Fiona is going to get her fostered, and if they are interested, I can give them her email address.
Thanks!
i don't want to step on anyone's toes so to speak. I adopted a dog directly from the local humane society. why would you insist people go through rescue? In government you would call that excess layers of bureaucracy.
my guess is if Betsy (the dog) has been neglected, that she is going to have some behavioral issues. If she goes to fostering first, they can evaluate her, and mabye even work on her issues, and then place her in a home best suited to deal with those issues, as opposed to her just being adopted by anyone, and having her land back in the pound.

am I right?
just heard from dixie rescue she will be put to sleep on friday if no one pulls her
therefore perhaps a person should take a chance on this dog if they want a sheepie?

my first sheepie came form the local humane society - he had been there for a loooong time waiting for me :)

he was wonderful.

From the discription about the dog it's first come gets her, that they do not hold.I'm not to sure what happens when rescue gets involved.

Is someone pulling her? Tomorrow is Fri! I'm 2 hrs away, I can help transport.
My husband just called the shelter (12:15 PM) and Betsy is being adopted "as we speak." And they DON'T put dogs to sleep, he was told.
Whew! I was getting food for the kids and was ready to go pick her up.

Small Miracles. :)
i would have gone to get her as well; I wsn't about to let one of my girls litter mates die!

That is correct. I was not INSISTING that she go to rescue first, however we were told that she is a wild pup. Knowing that info, she would have had a better chance finding someone after she was evaluated. If she goes to rescue, in a foster home first, these issues could have been addressed. This would have elimated the chance that she may end up back at the shelter because she could not be handled by her adopter.

We had also found out that the info about her being PTS was incorrect, and that there was someone already interested in her.
see; that makes great sense to me. I mean, why doom the dog to be bounced in and out of shelters, when a brief stay with a foster family can help to set her on the right path. I hope the folks adopting her are aware of her unique situation, and are the right folks to help her and make her a good home!

but the right people could be a dog savy family that can make their own assessment as well.

I am certain rescue placements don't work out 100% of the time either.

No, they don't and that's despite people's best efforts. Nothing is 100%.

Even if you have a good feel for a dog, which I do think you tend to get a better grasp of in a foster home rather than a shelter setting, there's still the tough job of evaluating if the home a dog is going to is a good fit. I've known some shelter placement people who have an almost uncanny ability to size up an adopter and a very good general sense of what most dogs, for instance, need. In part because they typically place so many more animals than a breed rescue does, so you kind of weigh one against another and a good shelter can do a very nice job.

Some times the best thing you can do as a rescue, if they don't already have someone interested, is send them a promising adopter. That's OK too.

Kristine
True, but this little girl needs to be spayed, which we KNOW the rescue will do, but have no guarantees that whatever individual adopted her directly from the shelter would. Just seems safer for her long term happiness & well being if she goes through rescue first. :)

From their petfinder information:

Adopting a friend
Our shelter is open Tuesday through Friday 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Adoptions end 1 hour prior to closing. Dogs are $105.00 and cats are $85.00 each. This fee helps to off set the costs we incur for spaying or neutering, vet examination, rabies vaccination, first shots, deworming, and microchipping. Dogs 6 months and older are tested for heartworms; positive or negative results are stated on the cage card. Cats are tested for feline leukemia and must be negative to enter our adoption program.
]

It appears they spay/neuter before they place?

Look, I'm not against rescue stepping in. But I also know from working with shelters up north that you have to be careful not to step on toes at the shelters (not saying that was done here in any way). Some times that means stepping back and letting them do their job. But it's a great opportunity to provide them with rescue contact information for the future in case they get an OES who is harder to place, so there's that benefit and that could save some dog's life some day.

Kristine
I agree, Kristine. And, in this case, I didn't view the information on the shelter, which I should've done before I commented. My bad.

I just know, from past experience in picking up dogs from shelters, that some of them don't know or care who gets the dog or what happens after it's out of their hands. I don't know about up north, but unfortunately down here, we have too many "pounds" run by "good ole boys" who network and pull pure bred dogs like this out and sell them to their brother-in-law's cousin's ex-wife who runs a puppy mill.

But, that said, I also know for every irresponsible shelter, there is one run by caring, responsible people who do their best to insure the dogs needs are met and are in good, loving homes. I just wish they were all like this one. In a perfect world - right? :?
From what I was told by Dixie, the policy of this shelter is that they cannot deny an animal to someone who has asked to adopt. They can and do attempt to guide people in their decisions. They agreed that "Betsy" would need someone that would be able to train her. That said, they would try to discourage someone that did not seem willing to do so. I certainly hope for the best for this girl. She looked so scared in the pics that I saw.
I was working with a shelter in GA that would only
work with rescue groups that had a 501(c)3 issued
in GA.
An adoption by an individual out of state was okay.

Maybe this is the case?? :?
does anyone know what happen she is still on petfinder
I emailed Fiona this morning to ask if any of her people had pulled Betsy.
She knew of someone that was going to go in and grab Betsy, but when she called the shelter, was told that Betsy was already "in process" and she was waiting to hear back if it was her person, of if a family had adopted her.

I'll report back when i know more.
Betsy was spayed yesterday and is doing very well.

She is being adopted today by a woman from Baltimore, MD and will have a sheepie brother. The adopter doesn't currently have a computer so she can't join the forum. I invited her to join)

So all is well with Betsy -- she is no longer a dog in trouble!
