Its sort of playful and never aggressive. Its just a little nip when she wants attention. I wonder if she happened upon this with the housesitter and got a "good" reaction so has continued to do it. It is not hurtful...but I have to stop it now. I don't like it and won't tolerate a nippy dog. Suggestions? |

Boot camp. My house. Aren't you going to New England this weekend? Get Jan to drop her off when she drops Sadie off
Seriously, Maggie went through a short bout of that - I just contacted Paulette to make sure there's no resurgence and she says no. It was: all fun stops the minute she nips. "Oops, too bad!" Beyond that I'd silently and quickly put her in another room behind a babygate and walk quickly away and she'd have to watch me play with the others. Since her goal was to be the center of the universe and the nipping was getting her the opposite, she decided pretty quickly to revamp her repetoire. It's attention seeking. Did the dog sitter say how she had been while you were gone? Kristine |
What? Lizzie and Maggie AREN'T the center of the universe?????????????? Housesitter actually never mentioned it to me. The cleaning lady told me Liz would nip the housesitter (and the cleaning lady) in the tush She never did that to us...still hasn't. But she's started this nipping thing. And I think that is the same thing she does to the cat (now that I think of it). He's always wet. What day does boot camp start? |

Tomorrow night or any time there after... And when you get back we're going to introduce Ms Thing to some sheep or maybe some goats first... Butt nipping!!! Brat!!! Kristine |
I have found with my limited knowledge of sheepies that ignoring a sheepie is the worst punishment in the world. Maggie is 4 months old today and when she is misbehaving..nipping jumping and whatever else a sheepie puppy can do, we turn our backs to her and then when she stops the behavior we praise, praise, praise. |

Bingo! How incredibly insightful. Many people get into a tussel with them to make them stop, but that's exactly what they want Kristine |

Kristine thanks but I cant take credit..I have done A LOT of reading on this forum and sheepieboss said not to get into "discussions" with them. My husband and I were both guilty of this and I read about ignoring them and positive reenforcement and boy it WORKS. |

Ain't that the truth...! This breed is so into figuring out what they need to do to get what they want. I mean, all breeds do this, but I think we must have inadvertently been selecting for dogs with superior people training skills because OES RANK in that department. The breed's abbreviation should be: OESMM - Old English Sheepdog Master Manipulators... So, kudos for sheepieboss for knowing this and you and your husband for listening to her! Kristine |
I am with my girls most of the time, but yesterday I was gone about 10 hours without them seeing me. Violet and China where alright with it, but Asia, the newest of the bunch seemed upset and kept nipping at my hands. I, of course, had to put a stop to it. I do know, however, that she was upset because she is not used to me being gone away from her for so long. She was a little clingy this morning when I took my hubby to work(the girls came of course). side barr: funny thing that happened in the Sheepie Shuttle after we dropped hubby off....Usually Violet sits on the couch and both China and Asia take turns sitting in the passenger seat in the front, and the other lays on the floor in the back, and they switch sometimes during the ride.(45 min). Anyway, for whatever reason Violet decided to lay on the floor which then left Asia in the front seat and China on the couch. Both Aussie's are intimidated by Violet, so won't try to go past her in such a confined area. So Asia and China kept chatting at each other. it was funny...something I had not seen before. They wanted to be together, but big sis Violet wouldn't let them. Anyway, funny story...I guess you had to be there. Back the to origianl posting. Anyway, everything is back to normal...so with Miss Liz it may be that she has had so many changes in her life recently that she is afraid you will leave and not come back....only a thought.
I am sure things will get better soon. |
Hmmm....maybe. I'm the only one in the family she's done this to. And I have been gone alot lately, first Key West, then for my training, and not being home some evenings for further training. Now Friday, I'm off again to New England. (Oy! Am I tired!) I'll try the ignoring thing, and maybe when she realizes I'm home for good, she'll settle in. She is such a funny dog! Oh...and did I mention, she's started barking a lot! I used to be able to stop her by putting her in her crate. Now she just sits there and barks! |
She misses her mom!! And you shall be punished for it. I bet when things slow down around your house she will get back to normal. |

She needs a job. One word: sheep. Lucky for you there are some in Genoa City... If not sheep, you may be directed to your nearest agility class... Kristine |
well they all need jobs. after herding sunday I had my two in the car - Marley in the back seat, Morgan in the way back. while i am talking to the instructor Marley starts to move into the driver seat - luckily she responds to the backseat command
The instructor's response is " she was just checkingh for the keys" |

And being a Sybil relative, don't doubt that she would have driven off if the keys were there!!! Kristine |

Noah started the nipping when he is in his wild playing mode.
I've got bruises on my arm! He also gets excited, rears up like a horse and jumps up and down like he's on springs. Do they all do that? My poor poms run for cover so he doesn't land on them! |

Not all, but two of mine would get overexcited in play and leap up and down like you describe and grab a sleeve or something. They've gotten past the grabbing, but when I come home Mace will still jump up and bounce off of me if I forget to anticipate and deflect. Several of the others stay with the more standard OES strategy of taking you out at the knees I'm not sure who they think will feed them if I'm in a full body cast...? My sympathies to your poor poms... Kristine |
Heck, they know Jan and I would take turns feeding them! |
debcram wrote: Heck, they know Jan and I would take turns feeding them!
Well, (though I do appreciate it ) DON'T TELL THEM THAT!!! Uncertainly over where their next meal is coming from may be the only thing keeping me upright at this point Kristine |

My sympathies to your poor poms... Kristine My knees thank you for the warning! Noah sat on Captain Cory my little 3 lb pommie, on the couch the other night, I thought I'd never get him up! They all run for cover when I let them out to potty, hoping he won't land on them when he starts hopping. This morning he was trying to get Bandit, a 5lb-er to play with him; (like that's going to happen.) Bandit wasn't having any part of it. Anyone ever try harnessing them to a pony cart? That'd be quite a ride. |
One day I was going down the stairs, and Pirate came bolting behind me. He knocked right into the back of my left knee. I fell down on my back and took the rest of the flight of stairs in that position! I was very lucky I didn't break anything, but really was banged up and bruised. Now I always make him go first. |
NCPomRanger wrote: Anyone ever try harnessing them to a pony cart? That'd be quite a ride.
Well, actually I have! It is an amazing ride! And mushing in the winter - It is a blast - I actually am looking forward to fall already to start carting and mushing again. |
Great pics! too funny! |
