Water, water, everywhere

Midwesterners: How is everyone. Storms have been dropping buckets of water and flood warnings are out. Tornadoes and multiple warnings are out. Chicago and surrounding area..are you ok?

Nita, are you keeping your head above water?

Kristine, house still standing?

Stacy, ditto.

I've posted before about the neighbors retaining wall that is on the back side of our house. Wellllllll, in the buckets of rain yesterday, a BIG portion collapsed. I'm now worried that a bigger portion is going to go with the rain today. We have a ten inch mudslide in our backyard.

Pictures to follow

OMG stay safe.
Yeah, we're still here. Glad you guys are still OK, Pam. Dashing to Home Depot before we get hit again.

I'm afraid to let the guys out back with out flotation devices. This is getting ridiculous.

Friday I left work in a hurry so I could get the dogs in the basement - a tornado was spotted about ten miles from here. Watching the news and chopping hair off Che when they showed a picture of a funnel cloud just a few miles down the road. That was fun.

Huge portions of the midwest is just a mess. Has anyone heard from Nita? I caught some footage of awful flooding down in Indiana but never did catch just where. Not pretty.

Kristine
Ohhhhh! Stay safe everyone! The weather has been the worst on record for i think they said a decade? I look forward to hearing all the midwesterners report in, and let us know they are okay!
We had water in the basement, coming up from cracks in the floor 8O . Spent hours down there moving things around so they don't get wet and keeping ahead :?: of the water. The biggest part is

I hoped that worked.

WHAHOOO it did.

It doesn't show in this picture, but the portion to the right is leaning and I think if we get alot of rain again its coming down.
OK I just got off the phone with Nit's husband. They are OK. Nothing in danger, Darrow said damage is in the next town, but so far they are good. Called Sunday @ 11:45 AM.

Just to let you know :) :) :)
Stay safe guys!!
8O Pam, does the wall run anywhere close to the house? 8O
WOW, you guys... I hope everyone stays safe and dries up soon!!
Indiana is a mess! Yesterday morning we lost power at 6:30 a.m...

Although our town was surrounded by water on all four sides if you know the back roads good enough there is usually one winding way out. If its closed we're stuck! Thankfully, one of the old timers sons checked it out and spread the word that the road was clear!

Everyone started contacting neighbors, made lists, gathered money, gas cans, etc. and headed out while they could and returned with supplies to last for a few days. (We were told we'd be without power for probably 3 days.) When they returned you slowly heard generators kicking on and off in all directions.

My nephew checked out one of the main roads on the way back and found the water had receded there enough to give us two winding routes in and out of town. :) After making deliveries he went on to ckeck other routes and passed the power crew.

They said they thought they'd be able to have our power on by dark! Bless their hearts it was on before 11:30 p.m.!!! Thankfully we were only without power for about 17 - 18 hours.

When the power came on we quickly turned on the air to cool off the house. I did dishes and a few other things - just in case we lost it again! Everyone with a basement is experiencing water seeping in. I don't have much seeping into mine, but just enough to wet the floor and EVERYTHING sitting on it! So, I have a lot of work ahead of me cleaning that mess up before it turns into a health hazard!

Once I was able to turn on the computer I couldn't believe my eyes. The first photo I seen of Terre Haute looked like New Orleans! A levy had broken. Martinsville has houses under water with only the roof sticking out.

Hubby and I discussed going to his sisters in Greenwood and waiting out the 3 days without power or to a motel in Cloverdale. It was a pleasant thought until we heard I-70, St. Rd. 231, HW 40, parts of HW 37 and so many more were either totally or partially closed. We were stuck!

I was told nothing was on I-70, and that cars were bumper to bumper on HW 40, which is the route everyone takes when theres an accident on I-70. I was told a few people had followed a couple semi's to our town and found themselves stranded. They were from Michigan, and wanted to know where the nearest motel was. I'm sorry, but if you know my area............... but I felt sorry for them. I'm sure they eventually made it to town, if not, someone out here would've put them up for the night.

I guess the best way to describe Indiana from what I've seen and heard is to remember the photo's you seen of New Orleans and visualize it statewide.

A lot of people could use your prayers!!! I made a promise to God last night when I seen the houses under water that I woud "try" not to complain again just because I was without power! At least I have my home and all the junk in it!!!

So many are displaced, and have lost so much, but I think there has been only one death!

Be ever so thankful for what you have. PREPARE for a disaster of any kind - it's too late after the fact...............

Say a special prayer for the emergency crews (which includes our son). They are such a special breed! And, the utility crews!
I'm about 50 miles northwest of Chicago and fortunately the severe weather has missed us. We had one storm go through earlier today with a lot of rain, thunder and lightening and a severe storm watch is in effect until later this afternoon. But no tornados, touch wood.

Everything is really green around here!
 this is very distressing to read! Please be careful, and I'll keep everyone (inculding your son) in my thoughts!

BE SAFE!!!!
It's pouring here now but, in looking at the radar, just north of us is getting the really ugly stuff. I can't believe how windy it's been. I'm hoping we don't get tornadoes because the dogs won't go in the basement.

Why, cuz there's monsters down there?

I don't know. Lucy had a major fear of all stairs, presumably from being pushed down them before I got her. She was all banged up when I rescued her. She passed the fear on to Clyde and then they both passed it on to Bear. We never encouraged them to go down there because James's workbench and stuff are down there and we didn't want them to get into anything that they shouldn't but it's times like this when it would be helpful.
Ron, no the wall is the back of the property. The first picture is taken from the dinette area. Thats the lovely view we have while eating.

I'm not sure how much rain we've had but from just looking in the garbage cans outside its close to ten inches.

I will say a special prayer for everyone in Indiana. We thought we had it rough!

Oh yeah, its raining.....heavy....again.
Just seen all the weird weather happening over there on the news today. Wow heat wave in one part, floods, tornadoes and wild weather in other parts. Hope everyone stays safe and no major damage to anyones homes.

Whacky weather is everywhere, is it truly global warming causing these problems all over the world?
Hoping and praying everyone will be safe
Times like this, I am so glad I live on top of a hill.
Of course, our house was nicked by a tornado before we bought it (found out after we moved in!) and about 5 years ago we had a very near miss - about 1/2 mile.

Water everywhere, and our just cut hay from last week didn't get dry enough to bale before the rains came. It lies rotting in the fields. :(

This last wave just missed us - we got rain as it was forming, then got worse as it has moved east. The rivers are all just hitting the top of the banks in places, and flooded over in others. Any more and we are in big trouble.
Two months ago I was freaking out because I live so close to the MS River - 2 blocks. The river came within 3 ft of the very top of the levees. I watched it daily.

Pam - you can come sweat it out here in LA if you need to. Bring London's twin on down and come and play. Otherwise - STAY SAFE!
I've been looking at the news headers and reading about this awful flooding again! We appreciate all your prayers.

I don't know if what I'm about to do is correctly done or not. If not, someone please edit my post! Thank you!

I have omitted all of the article except, for the part about the dog shelter.

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Parts of Martinsville are still underwater leaving hundreds of people looking for dry land. (Some homes have only the roof sticking out of the water!)

The Lil' Bit of Heaven Animal Welfare organization is also relying on volunteers to help more than a 100 water soaked dogs.

Volunteer Laura Martins said the dog barn started flooding, so one by one the dogs were loaded on a boat and brought to dry land.

These people know a disaster like this doesn't discriminate against the four-legged kind.

People who want to help the Red Cross need to contact the Indianapolis chapter at 317-684-1441.

People who want to donate food for the Red Cross should call the catering company Water to Wine 765-318-7222.

Anyone wanting to help the Lil' Bit of Heaven Animal rescue group should call them at 317-313-3626.

Man, the poor midwest is getting hammered by the weather this year - first all the snow and ice, and now this. I pray that all of you can stay safe and that this latest weather front passes soon.

On the east coast, we're in the middle of our first heat wave, and summer hasn't even officially started yet. Here in my portion of PA (about halfway between the northern and southern borders on the east) this will be our 3rd day of 96-98 deg temps. Today's heat index is expected to be 106 deg. Talked to our son in VA last night and their regular temp hit 102 deg yesterday!

Makes you think . . .
We've had tons of rain, high winds and severe thunderstorms, but thank goodness...no tornados.

We are keeping an eye on the DesPlaines river, could have some flooding.

Everyone be safe and wear waterwings.
I've seen the reports on TV, stay safe everyone! :ghug:

its been hot here in Atlanta as well. Average daytime temp is 95 degrees now, and that doesn't include the affect of humidity. Our central air conditioning of course went out on Wednesday, and they weren't able to fix it until Saturday. We contemplated boarding the dogs somewhere, and instead kept them home and hosed down, and took them for long, air conditioned car rides. Even so; by Sunday we had a Heat Stroke scare with Tonks ( she was vomitting what little food and whater she'd taken in) and it was enough to motivate Adam (finally!) to agree to start looking for a ome for us to buy.

Thankfully the emergency vet said it wasn't heat stroke, but the scare was enough. No more dog park til the heat breaks, and we've been having walks at 11pm... when the temp is down to a mere 85 degrees.
We’re OK here. Just tons of rain and some tornado warnings over the last few weeks. No major flooding, water is up some and a few roads are closed. And none of the tornadoes have touched town near by, mostly upper rotation causing the warnings, only some wind damage: trees down, electric out, stuff blown around etc.

But all the water is causing problems with spring planting and the hay harvest. The fields are just too wet. Nothing is getting in or out. It is a little worrisome.

My OES Bogart was barking and, woke me up a few nights ago when the tornado sirens went off in town. I grabbed the emergency kit and we all headed for the safest part of the house. Dogs thought it was a party; a captive audience and plenty of dog toys.
...and we spent $150 billion on a "stimulus package" instead of building a greenhouse gas eliminating solar array....

Everyone please stay cool and dry except out west where everyone should stay cool and damp.
Glad everyone is safe! We're doing fine out here. There were two waves of severe rain and thunder yesterday. I'm surprised the backyard isn't a lake yet.
I can't believe I missed this all weekend. too busy trying to stay cool i guess.

Now I know why my Indiana and Michigan emails have gone unanswered today.
Wisconsin did get soaked! One day's total in some places is 60% of our total precip. 8O If that amount were to hit now with the Rio Grande so high due to snow pack runoff, I'd be half way to El Paso via the watery route. You guys try to keep your toes dry!

For a look at yesterday's rain total......and previous days.....http://www.cocorahs.org Just scroll down a tiny bit to get the nation's map for that day. Lots of red/orange for Wisconsin.....and Oklahoma.
Well, here's the latest.

Wisconsin Dells is a very BIG tourist area for us. I'm not sure if this was yesterday or today but Lake Dalton disappeared. It was there one minute, flooding homes and a few minutes later...gone. The river found formed a new path around a dam and drained the lake. It took so little time to empty a 240acre lake.

I saw the pictures and video on the weather channel. I somehow missed that Lake Dalton drained around the dam!! 8O

We love going there - such a beautiful area.
I found a story on it...
http://www.nbc15.com/news/headlines/19700519.html

Wow.
Just a reminder for anyone that is traveling through any flooded state.........
Please be careful!!! There are many bridges, roadways, levies and dams that are near collapse!

A road that may look safe - may be washed out underneath just waiting on the weight of one more vechile to cause it to give out.

If you're coming through Indiana - stay away from I-70 (Cloverdale and Brazil exits), Sr 231, St Rd 243 and HW 40 UNLESS you know for sure I 70 is open both directions. I use that section of the interstate often, and I know that detour is hell right now!!! Stop, wait, 5 mph, repeat....

They just put in a brand NEW bridge down the road on ST Rd 42. Had to close the dam at the lake because of I-70, and now, that millions of dollars worth of bridge is sitting under water, and its not even completely finished!!!

Oh man, that's terrible. That poor guy's house just cracking in half like that. Not to mention that insurance may not cover. Devastating.
The training building where Sybil has her obedience classes flooded. Not tremendously, but enough to make training last night interesting. They were still mopping out parts of the place while we had class on still-wet mats. We did mostly doodling to avoid us or the dogs falling on our you know whats. I'm not sure if that's dedication or insanity...

The terrier, the OES, the Weim and the springers all showed up. The only dogs conspiciously AWOL were the Goldens..? :lmt:

Trivial in the grand scheme of what's going on in terms of flooding, but a rather interesting experience I don't really need to repeat any time soon

they are all probably swimming around and around their yards :0

Good to hear you are safe and relatively dry. and to think we wimped out on puppy class because it was too hot.
Stay safe. The cold front is headed our way this afternoon. With actual temps near 100 and 105-110 with the humidity factor the stroms should be doosies. They have already posted severe storm & tornado watches.
After 2 weeks without a bathroom, I'm really going to be upset if my 1/2 finished one gets damaged
Yes, I'm developing a bathroom phobia.
kerry wrote:

Oh, I would have wimped out on that too. Especially with a puppy. The heat back East sounds brutal. Stay cool and we'll focus on drying out. A good performance friend of mine from PA offered to send me dry towels... Sheesh, that's sweet, but what I really thought we were going to need was a row boat

Sybil looked like she was trying to figure out how to pee off the side of the dogwalk. She and Mace spent most of their time outside perched up there. When they'd go out at all. Belle would only go out if I accompanied her, and by Sunday night I literally had to push Liz and Sybil's behinds out the door. It got so bad that when I'd open the door and ask who needed to go out they'd both run the other way

"We'll just cross our legs till morning."

Sure. Yeah. I've heard that one before

Kristine
yep marley does the - if its so great out you come out here number too.

right now I am forced to walk them on leashes - Morgan doesn't want to even leave the house.

we got a wading pool for the boys (Marley is still in long coat although I am debating that decisions) and none of them will go in. I asked them to teach puppy in daycare to play in the pool - then hopefully he can teach the big boys :)
Well, not everybody continues dog training as usual. A well known agility instructor/competitor to the south of me whom an OES friend of mine trains with periodically suffered quite a bit of damage, though at least she and her dogs are OK.

http://danapike.com:80/Tornadodamage.html

That was Friday afternoon after I ran home to be with my dogs & cat in case we had to bolt for the basement. As storm after storm went through and nothing happened I started to feel a bit silly about bolting from work. But maybe not

Kristine
oh my! I hope everyone was okay?

What a mess to clean up :(

That is bad. Amazing that she, the dogs and her house were safe. Mostly OK, for the house anyway.

And speaking of storms, the next one is just getting to me....the rain has started.
