Daddy and I are concerned about the pooter, she has this strange little breathing thing where she seems to lose her breath for a few minutes and she 1/2 coughs and 1/2 puffs, about 7 or eight puffs. It happens at the wierdest times, once she was really excited and we were playing tug, she was visibly put back after the "episode", she jsut stood there and looked at us, didn't want to play anymore. The other two times it has happened, both times she was lying down, no excitement, just hanging out and suddenly she started the puffs, they seemed uncontrollable like a hiccup would be, and she just sort of stands or lies still and suffers through it. These occurrecnces have been far apart, the most recent one was about a week ago, and previous to that, I want to say it happened last spring. Any ideas? She is going in for a tune-up after the holidays, I plan to ask the vet then- she is up-to-date on her shots. Is this an OES thing? Any one have any experience with anything like this? All comments appreciated. Thanks! Up. |

How old is she? It's not "normal" - but it may not be anything to be concerned about.
Is she on Heartworm Preventative? When is the last time she had HW Testing done? Things to do.... Check the color of her gums and make sure they are nice and pink. (check them now and when she's having an "attack") See if you can see anything in her throat (i.e. a string from a chew rope, etc.) It sounds like a breathing problem - similar to an asthma attack in humans - but I'm not an expert by any means - so I would speak to your Doctor (I would call them and see if they feel she should be seen before her routine appointment rather than waiting until after the holidays). It's hard to tell with breathing abnormalities - because it could be so many different things. Good Luck! I'll be thinking of her!!! Kristen |
I don't recall how young your pup is, but when they are small their stomach is close to their diaphram which can cause hiccups more frequently.
I agree with Kristen about asking the Heartworm Preventative question, or when she last had Heartworm testing done. If she's not on Preventative, I would definitely have her tested. |
Along with what was suggested in the other replies, it may be an allergic reaction to something... is she around any particular substance when this happens? Maybe just try to take note of what she is doing and if there is anything in common with the surroundings, timing, material of a certain toy, after eating etc.... I hope it's nothing serious, it may just be her puppy way of letting out a little excitement, instead of the mad dog run around the house...lol... |
Yes sounds like a breathing problem, maybe doggie version of allergic asthma? I know that horses can get this, it would makes sense that puppers could too. Let us know what you find out when she goes in! Thanks,

Thanks for the advice everyone -
I don't think it's normal either- we are taking her in to the vet. She seems to get 'winded' a lot faster than other dogs her age too. It may be asthma or allergies, or some other respitory thing. At least that's my guess at this point- good news is that she was tested for h-worm last spring and went on Heartguard through the summer and fall, so I don't think it could be the dreaded heartworm. I'll let you all know when I find more out. I'm a bit of a worry worm so hopefully this is more my issue than hers! Thanks! Up. |
Well we have been to the vet and we know what the problem is. He called it : "reverse sneezing". He then proceeded to imitate it - exactly- as well as show us the exact face she makes when it's over. (it was pretty funny!) He said it is a small reaction, possibly to an allergen in the environment, that is something like a nasal "tickle" and that she sucks the air in and makes that little cuogh/breathing noise to essentially "scratch the itch". He thinks because it happens so infrequently there is nothing to worry about and no need to pursue it further, he said if the bouts become more frequent we can call him and talk about a little Benadryl.
You learn something new EVERY DAY. It was hysterical to watch him imitate the noise/breathing thing, I knew that he knew EXACTLY what we were talking about when he did that. He's a new vet for us, out last one decided to go into training to pursue wildlife rescue, so it's great to find someone good right off. Thanks everybody for all of the advice and for taking the time to care about our little girl. Up. |
I was wondering if it was reverse sneezing; the FloofDog's been doing that for years.
I guess I DO know what I'm talking about - next time I'll post. Oh, she also does this sometimes if she scarfs down her food too fast. J |
That's good that it's nothing serious... and too funny to picture a vet doing a demonstration! LOL |
OMG ...I am so glad I found something in regards to this "reverse sneezing issue". I have 2 st. poodles and both started this up intermittenly over a year ago! 3 different vets have no answers for me and they both have tested negative for HW and been on HW preventative. I think your vet maybe right about the "reverse sneeze" the more I think about it the more it makes sense!...About 18 months ago we adopted our 1st cat and since then have a total of 3 cats. We have also bought a house that has wall to wall carpeting! The dogs started "hyperventilating" or rather "reverse sneezing" every few months intermittenly for days at a time! I wonder why its not very well known to other doctors!...I am now on a mission to find another vet. with more experience in this matter! I think I will request a full work up on both dogs again to be on the safe side. I am so glad I found this bLog!...Thank you all! |
