Lucy in Kansas City Shelter!!!

Hi guys! This girl just came up on Petfinder this morning! I would LOVE to go get her until I could find her a home but I am worried that Brosnan is too young to bring a rescue girl in! (He's hasn't completed all of his puppy shots yet!)

If I can help in ANY way please let me know!! She looks so sweet and this is a kill shelter. This shelter is REAL close to me and I will help in ANY way I can...pulling her...transportation help...etc! Not sure if this link will work but she is in Wayside Waifs in Kansas City!

How old is Lucy? Have you contacted the shelter? I'm very close as well.
Hi! All it says is "adult"! I called at 8:30am and no one answered. I left a message for them to contact me. If they don't call back in the next couple of hours I will call try again! :)
Hmm...according to their website their adoption center is closed on Wednesdays! I will wait and try and get ahold of someone in a couple hours. I doubt they are going to return my message today since they are "closed" for adoptions but I would think I should be able to get ahold of someone there!
Ok...I just spoke to Jessica at Wayside and she said that Lucy is approximately 5 and she was found as a stray. They people that found her had her for a month and then surrendered her to Wayside! She also said that she has been there since May 24th and that it is up to her supervisor as to whether or not she can be released to a rescue....they prefer to find an "adoptive" home rather than sending them to a rescue.

I find this particularly confusing as I would tend to think it is safer for the dog to go to a rescue with people that are knowledgeable of the breed and able to assure proper placement with an adoptive family.

She said she had another call about Lucy to and she was going to call that lady back. She said she would keep me informed about her situation.

I agree but I think Wayside Waifs would work hard to find her the right home. It's a good place...or at least it was when we lived in the area. I adopted Parker from Wayside almost 11 yrs ago when they were still in the little red building! They've grown a lot since then!

Keep us posted.

I will be happy to foster Lucy if she needs an immediate home -

Yes and no. Some shelters haven't had the greatest experiences with rescues - I'm not talking OES, but in general; others know that a PB dog with no serious health/temperament issues isn't typically all that hard to place. They've already spent $$$ caring for her. If they hand her over to rescue they usually forego the adoption fee, in which case it would be in their best interest to adopt her out themselves.

Just a couple of possibilities. Locally, shelters will only ask us to take a dog if it is deemed unadoptable by their standards.

Glad she seems OK and its wondeful that you checked up on her. Hopfully they will contact you if for some reason they aren't able to place her, so you've added a security net for her.

I am happy to hear that there have been good experiences with Wayside Waifs! I feel better knowing that they care about the placement of their animals! I feel confident that she will let me know if they are unable to place her but I will definitely keep and eye on her! :D
Keep an eye on her, and let me know if you need any help!
I will...promise! Thank you!!!!!
I just wanted to let everyone know that I spoke to Wayside Waifs yesterday and Lucy found a new home this past weekend! She didn't give me any specific details but she was confident that Lucy went to a loving home! :D
Yeah! Thank you for keeping on eye on her!
Hello!!

It's been awhile ago but I ran across these posts online and thought I'd thank all of you for thinking of "Lucy in Kansas City" (June 2008). I can tell you all have hearts of gold when it comes to animals & especially OES.

We adopted Lucy, now "Lexi" in June of 2008. My husband has had 4 OES in the past and it was 12 years since his last one, Angie. I've never had an OES - they are quite the characters!

Lexi instantly had 3 new siblings, Beethoven, Riley & Barnie and she adapted well to all (well except for her new sister, Riley, a Cocker Spaniel). They're cordial to each other now.

She lives part time in Nebraska and Florida. Her brother Barnie, a Beagle/Terrier mix, also an adoptee from a rescue force in Florida, has taught her a lot - some good some bad - from barking at 4-wheelers and tractors in the country in NE and at boats in the back yard in FL.

Wayside Waifs was absolutely wonderful to work with. They definitely did their homework on us and we were happy to answer all their questions. They wanted to make sure 'Lucy' went to a good home.

Lexi weighed 46 pounds, had an ear infection, was just spayed, was an absolute mess and was as skinny as a rail when we adopted her, shortly after Wayside received her. She now weighs about 70 lbs, looks wonderful and enjoys her lifestyle! She's as sweet of a girl as all the people at Wayside told us she was. I constantly tell her..."look at you...this is a far cry from the streets of KC, huh?"

We love her dearly and we know she loves us back. Thanks to you all and to Wayside Waifs for helping us find her and...her find us!
Wow, how wonderful for Lucy and thank you so much for filling us in on how she made out! :D

Kristine
That is great news and thanks for the update! :D

give your Lexi a big hug :cheer:
Thats awesome...lucky girl
Thank you!
:yay: I love a happy ending!
So nice to hear positive follow-up stories! Thanks for sharing the update.
