I have told this customer that I call him "a merchant's worst nightmare" and he just laughs. I have asked this customer if he would want to do business with himself... he just laughs. I foresee a day when merchants smarten up and actually refuse to do business with certain customers, and when stores subscribe to a service that will allow them to decide whether or not to do business with a certain customer, similar to the check verification companies and credit checks. Call them "Consumer Reputation Checks." CRCs could work for eBay merchants, too. Oh sure, "consumer activists" will raise a huge stink about their use but it will die down over a year or two, just like when "privacy activists" ran around screaming about computer "cookies." Hear anything about those lately? The argument will go like this: "These few customers cost us so much money they increase prices for everyone else who doesn't have unrealistic expectations of perfection all the time. A few returns or complaints won't hurt your score, we're just trying to weed out the bad actors who take advantage of retailers and drive up prices for everyone else." Maybe there will be different prices or different contract terms for people with different CRC scores. People like my acquaintance above will have such bad scores that merchants might say: "I'll do business with you, but only on an as-is basis" or even "Please take your business elsewhere." There will be whole industries set up (in certain neighborhoods, perhaps) where people with bad CRCs can shop... "Shop here at the CRConvenience Mart" "Bad CRC? Buy your car here, at JD SellRyder." "Bad CRC? No Problem! All complaint forms will be accepted!" "...and if we make a deal, we'll give you access to a private complaint hotline!" |

My husband and I own a small business and we too have met people like your friend. It doesn't matter what we do it wont make whatever their problem is right. We have "fired" a few customers over the past few years. We just let them know that we are not the right people to help them and thank them for their business. Otherwise we lose a lot of money or sit in a corner talking to ourselves which then would require professional help. The best thing about owning your own business is the customers and the worst thing about owning your own business is the customers. |
I have a brother and nephew who both own restaurants.
If you're interested in owning a business that loses money on complaints, this may be a good choice. |
