Are you renting a big unit or do you have one already? I've steam cleaned with just, well, steam before and it worked pretty well. I just skipped the solution and filled it with water. |
I've just used hot water too with great results. We have stain release carpet though.
I wonder if you could use distilled white vinegar? |
I'd worry about what the vinegar does to the carpet.
I would go with the plain hot water as a first choice. You may need to clean the area a couple of time to get the dirt out - the return water should be pretty clear. If you decide to use a solution, go over the area several times with plain hot water. Remember to run some tap water throught the machine first to clear out any leftover residue. We bought a refurbished rug doctor twenty years ago. It was a great deal then and has probably saved our carpet several times.. |
there are also a number of eco friendly cleaners out there - not that he couldn't be allergic to them but they may reduce the chance of chemical sensitivities. I'd also make sure to keep him off for a day or two to make sure it was really really dry. |
I use Nature's Miracle in my carpet cleaner machine. It works very well. I also use it in the laundry instead of bleach with a "pee" load.
Marie (with a very cute puppy in the house that needs a good home and little Dixie who still isn't quite housebroken) |
Anytime I've steamcleaned I just used a color safe bleach, but I have no idea what to suggest re allergies. |
I have used the pet version of the carpet cleaner, bleach (on a really nasty "spot"), Oxyclean, and Odoban. (not all together though!!)
Another option would be to use the product you like, then go over the carpet again with just plain water in the tank. That should give you a pretty good rinse. |

I have my own machine to steam with. I also use the little green machine spot getter on the oops. The problem is with the oopsss I'm seeing how really dirty my carpet has become |
I have a color safe bleach that I use for many things, its made by 7th Generation, its a little cheaper than the name brand color safe bleach, and seems to work better. Plus its environmentally friendly. All of their products that I have tried so far, I like. Same with Clorox Greenworks. For my carpet I bought a kit from Premium Capture carpet cleaning system (I like testing out new cleaning products, I try to restrain myself til after I've checked them out, sometimes I manage, others....). Anywhoo, the Capture stuff actually seemed to do a pretty darn good job, and its non-toxic, safe around kids and pets. For those who have never heard of it, its a slightly moist powder that you sprinkle on generously, brush in, let stand, then vacuum up. I LIKE IT! And the brushing in is a good workout, lol. Seriously though, its a good product, and they make other carpet cleaning items. I bought it at my commissary, but they also carry it at Lowe's. It's satisfaction garaunteed, don't know how hard it would be to get your money back, but I didn't want my money back, I just want to buy more Capture! I'd steer clear of the vinegar, as it would make any spots with pee smell stronger, at least in my experience. OH oH oh, for spot cleaning, like wet.....icky spots, I love the Resolve High Traffic Foam or the Resolve Spot Magic. Both have pulled up some pretty nasty looking uh.......spots. Good luck on your quest for the cleaner thats perfect for your family! |
