Bruce--our first OES

Hello! Thanks for all the great advice on here. My husband and I have been reading forum topics for months since we decided to get an OES. We picked him up Saturday and he is adorable. We prepared for months and months, but nothing could prepare us for the sleepless nights. We moved the crate to the living room and he will go in for naps and at night after we play with him till he drops :D However, after taking him out around 3:00 he goes back in and whines the rest of the night (till 6:15). I know from all the other posts like this it will get better. We put a t-shirt in there and such, and tonight we are going to try the alarm thing. It's getting him through the second part of the night that we are struggling with. Any suggestions on making him go back to sleep after waking him up to potty?

Another thing that scares me is that he threw up after a treat yesterday, last night he threw up dinner, and today he threw up water and a hairball. My hubbie says puppies get sick a lot because of their "new" tummies and their explorations. Should I be concerned or is this normal?

How do you insert pictures? I would love to show our wigglebum off!

Welcome to the community and congratulations on your new puppy Bruce!!

Some people have better luck putting the crate in their bedroom. I hope others will hop in with lots of suggestions.

To insert pictures into your post, they need to be hosted here in our photo gallery at oes.org.
There is a whole topic on picture posting in the FAQs section.

I'm looking forward to seeing them!!!
Welcome, from Denver. With Bella we had her in our bedroom and covered the crate with a towel. However, for a few weeks she would cry when she went back to the crate after a nighttime potty outing. She eventually grew out of that and it is now just a momentary puppy memory. Sheepies are more than capable of making you forget minor unpleasant times.
Wow we need photos.
Are you feeding pup on food breeder was using? Stick to that for the time being, treats are not a good idea in a young puppy as they sometimes upset their little tums. If they guzzle the water they sometimes do bring it back. If pup has been playing and is excited wait until they calm down before offering water. I used to have a yorkie who drank water just because it was there!
Someone will have to sleep in the room where your puppy is. That solved my whining problems. Sometimes my puppy has to go to the bathroom a couple times at night, but she does sleep through the night most nights as long as someone is in the room with her. Sometimes my puppy gets thirsty in the middle of the night and will bark until she gets water. So, try to give her something to drink too and see if that is the problem.
Welcome.......I wish you patience....you'll need it.

Ditto bringing crate into bedroom beside the bed.....your new bedside table?? LOL. Someone will learn how to sleep with their fingers in the crate to keep puppy happy 8) (some of us gave up and let the puppy sleep on top of us and she hasn't been off the bed since...... )

As for vomiting......was she properly weaned? Hopefully she's not a 5 week old wonder. Ditto no water right after play. Ditto no treats. Ditto same food as was fed before..........and by all means cut back on the amount. Over eating leads to tummy distress. Is the pup getting any food and water to stay down? If not, beeline to the vets. Otherwise, go slow, their tummys aren't that big, you might need more than 3 feeds a day for a few days. Just keep them tiny until she can keep them down. If she's still vomiting even with small amounts, I'd be very concerned.

Remember, patience. As you've read, don't be in a hurry to take the puppy out into world, too many bad bugs out there. She needs you to protect her and yet be aware of her needs so you can react quickly if you suspect something is not right.
Welcome. AHHHH sleepless nights, I remember them. They are part of the package.

I did not bring Tasker into the bedroom in his crate, I left him in the kitchen, he adjusted. What ever works best for you is the way to go.
Welcome to the Forum! You have discovered a knowledgeable, friendly community! Glad you checked it out before getting your bundle of fluff. The advice you have been given so far is great! We kept our puppy (now 10 months old) in a HUGE crate in our bedroom. Our daughter who was 10 at
the time actually slept with him for the first night. It still fits him and he will go in and out of it throughout the night now that he is more trustworthy in the potty department. He also likes to sleep on the tile floor in the bathroom or the tile floor in the foyer by the front door. Coolness is of prime importance! I also cut back on late night drinks unless it was really hot out; this eliminated the middle of the night outings.
We are relatively new sheepie parents (maggie is 13 weeks old now) and we keep her crate in the bedroom. When we put her back in, she would fuss a little bit and we too put a towel over the crate so she wasnt distracted by the task at hand..sleep!! We also read this forum before she came to live with us and I had read a lot that keeping them cool is real important so we have a fan just outside her crate and I think the white noise of the fan helps as well as keeping her cool. They are the greatest, smartest dogs in the world as far as I am concerned  We also keep reminding each other that sleep was overrated.
Congratulations on the new addition to the family, love the name Bruce.

With the vomitting, don't feed or give water while the pup is hypo or been playing and all excited, wait till they have calmed down then feed. Guaranteed up it comes if they have been all worked up and excited when you feed them.

Good practice to get into anyway even as adults after exercising or hard play till they settle down and cool down a bit you never feed them straight away or let them drink gallons of water it helps then to prevent a dog bloating.
I put a womb sounds bear in Nigel's crate when we first got him. The first few nights were bad!!! He still sleeps in his crate in my bedroom and he is 1 yr old. I don't trust him yet...he has his moments.

You will have broken sleep until the pup is old enough to hold it longer. I think Nigel was around 4 months when he slept through...but I don't remember. See...how soon we will forget.
Yall are so great to give us so many wonderful suggestions. I am going to try everything I can. Last night I set an alarm for 3am and took him out. He was fine till then, which was awesome and we are so proud of him for making it from 10-3am, but once again he whined when he went back in. We ignored it for as long as we could, but my hubbie goes to work at 7am, so I went and slept across from his crate on the couch. He whined a bit, but I gently told him no and he would settle down. I guess it was that he could see me that calmed him down. He gets this burst of energy from going to potty and we can't get him to go back to sleep. So either we need to get the crate in the room or find a way to settle him after potty. I think we are just worried if we put him in the bedroom he will never want to sleep without us.

Also, once I find my camera cord, we will post pictures-we have some great ones
One thing we did that I forgot to mention before was we put a stuffed bear in her crate with her so she could lay on top of him. Kinda like having another puppy in with her. I promise it doesn't last too long. Maggie is 13 weeks old and has been sleeping from 10-5 now for about 3 weeks. We can even put her back in the crate on weekends and she will sleep for another 2 hours. Hang in there!!
Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on your new puppy.

You will get tons of good advice here, and in return we like photos
Welcome! One note of caution about sleeping on the sofa so your puppy can see you, almost 11 years ago we got two boys, littermates. I started sleeping in the living room so they could see me from their crates...I'm STILL sleeping on the sofa  . They got so used to me being there they had a fit if I dared to sleep in a bed :D . All the newer guys are the same way
Loving the advice-I am up for trying anything that will help Bruce. Last night Bruce slept through the night--eith that or I slept hard :) . He is still having accidents in his crate and around the house, no matter how often we take him out, but I know it will get better. I tied bells to the back door, so I am going to try the "bell method". We'll see! I hope these photos come out. If not-they are posted in the 1st puppy section.

Welcome to the forum! Oh, be still my heart - Bruce is just TOO cute for words! That third picture is priceless - and frame-worthy. :hearts:

We've always had rescues, so puppies is not an area of expertise for me. Good luck!!
Thanks for all the compliments--I think he's a cutie pie too. We went to the vet today to get some flea, tick, and mosquito medicine and he was so good. There were a couple of crazy dogs, and I was holding Bruce, but he didn't even freak out! He is 12 lbs now and we are 2 days with no inside accidents----man he is growing so fast  But really-I love him and I love yalls advice. I'll keep you updated.
OK-new issue, and I have looked up old forums about fleas, but I am so worried. We live in Louisiana and we have a huge flea issue. Bruce had been here 2 weeks before I took him to get K9 advatix from our vet. I put it on him Thursday, but today I found 2 LIVE fleas on him and he has flea dirt. It is especially hard to find on his dark coat. I don't get it! We sprayed surfaces before he came, our trips outside are quick, and advatix is supposed to kill fleas. Did I do something wrong and should I call the vet tomorrow?? I do not want to have a flea infestation--it happened to us 2 years ago when my parents dog came to stay with us and it was terrible.

yeah; My guys were crated in the kitchen, and I did ALOT of sleeping on the kitchen floor. I joked that when I bought thier first dog bed, it was really for me.... and I wasn't joking all that much.

They are now 7 months old, and we are trying to let them sleep loose in the house. We've restricted them to 1/2 the house (ours is a small place) and they do seem to fall asleep with my boyfreind on the sofa alot too....

I've never used Advantix. I used Revolution (which my girls had a bad reaction to) and Frontline, which seems to be doing the job. I've found 2 dead ticks on my girls since we stared using it, so I think that means its working.

We used to have a REALLY bad flea problem, long before we got our girls. Our neighbor fed stray cats, and they'd walk through our lawn and just drop fleas and eggs. Our solution was to not only treat the house (we had it bombed a couple of times) but to also treat the lawn. We do it a couple of times a year, and that pretty much stopped our flea problem in its tracks.

However; a word of warning. Depending on what you use, its not safe for the dogs to go on the lawn til after a few days, or a good rain. We time our lawn treatment so it coincides with a time we needed to board the dogs, or be we can all away. The last time we did it was right before leaving for Sheepie Palooza.
We didn't use a crate with any of our three sheepdogs. All three were bedded down on a pad on the floor beside our bed. If they started to whine I reached down to reassure them which usually stopped it. There were always some sleepless times at first, but it soon passed.
We pick up our fourth pup four weeks from Wednesday........I can't hardly contain myself !!
Hello again. It has been a few weeks.-hope everyone had a nice 4th! Bruce is now 3 months old and he sure is growing. He is almost 20 pounds. He is sleeping through the night until about 6 am, but he has got some new issues. Mainly, the one I am concerned most about is that he is resource guarding his food and bones. So--no more bones, but he has snapped at my husband and I when we pet him near his food. We are working on it-he's not aggressive when we feed him by hand, but when the bowl goes down and he eats from it is when he starts seeing red. It scares me and we are researching it and trying techniques, but I am disappointed and hurt. Another thing-he's already humping--we tell him to stop and he will, but he loves legs. So--ol' Bruce is keeping us super busy! Any advice??
It's amazing how such a little squirt can hurt our feelings.
It's pretty normal but it's important to correct it now.

This article may help you to teach Bruce that you're one of the good guys!

Thanks. That was a great article. We are going to try some of those techniques. Bruce starts his 6 week obedience class in a few weeks--thank God! I called a highly recommended trainer here in Baton Rouge right after I posted yesterday and he was very nice. I can't wait!! He gave us a few tips for now that have helped with his issues.
I grew up with a dog that was very aggressive when it came to food. In fact I was bitten by him a couple of times, the worst was when I was doing the dishes and I dropped a cake pan on the floor, without thinking about the dog being there, I reached down to pick it up and was bitten. That experience has had positive and negative effects on me. For the negative, I have a very hard time liking poodles. I have a fear of little dogs, (funny I have 3 large breed dogs and they dont scare me one bit) but put a taco bell dog in front of me and I'll walk around to avoid the little ankle biter.

The positive effect that it has on me is I made it a point to teach my dogs not to be food aggressive around humans or around other animals. Some of the things I have done may help you.

From the very beginning when bringing the puppy home, I would either stir the food as they were eating or have one of my children do the same. I also will pick up the bowl add treats etc. As in the article I make sure they know what off and out mean. Very important. I have 2 oes and one old lady GSD. They all will sit pretty and I can hold a piece of food and say out, they'll sit drool and wag bums and tails then when given the "OK" they will take the food gently from my hand. Its very important to teach "gentle" as well when feeding out of hand.

Sophie is almost 5 mo old now and is doing better at this.
