Probiotics...which one is best?

I am researching into probiotics for the dogs. They do have some in their food (Canidae Lamb and Rice), but I am thinking it might help Nigel's somewhat nervous tummy. He gets the runs when frightened, or a bad case whenever it gets hot here. Weather change to heat gets him every time. I was looking at Flint River Ranch probiotics.

Any feedback on probiotics would be welcome. :?

I just buy whatever pharmacy brand for people, it doesn't have to be specifically for dogs. It's a lot cheaper that way.
Is it just called probiotic powder...I haven't ever looked for it before.
Actually I buy the capsules. They are filled with powder so you can just break open the caps to put it on their food.
What do they call them in store brand...there are so many kinds. I just want to know what ingredients to look for.
we get a powder from our newfie breeder that disolved in water (I mix it in yogurt) I can look tonight and see what they call it. It is in a white tub with a green lid. it is claimed to be even better than the vet ones.

It has helped Morgan's tendancy to developing the runs over any little thing.
We use this one but it comes in a breeder size container-

There is also a product called Fastrack.
I use generic strawberry flavored chewables that you can pretty much find in any drug store. The dogs seem to enjoy it like a treat.
Verve up...do they call them probiotic tablets?
During times of stress we were told to double the probiotic we give.

Panda had an some bad diarrhea over the weekend... stress was the only thing we could think of that might have caused it. Our son was home for a couple of days and she L-O-V-E-S him because he picks on her.

The vet on called diagnosed it as cholotis... it was the kind of diarrhea where about 5 doses of Kaopectate did not fix (black because of blood... sorry to be so graphic  but is was a bad case).

We were told the next time we expect there will be stress to double the amount of probiotics we normally give her. The package says this and so did the vet on call (but be sure to check with your vet). She said it will help to keep the good bacteria level higher than the bad.

Thankfully she's fine again :phew:
Nigel gets like that when it get hot out all of a sudden. I have Kaopectate gel with gut flora in it from the vet, but I think the probiotics would be better as a preventative. I will look in the drug store tomorrow. I guess I am looking for something with the same stuff in it as the dog food.

Do you look in the antacid area...or vitamins?
You can get fortiflora from the vets office or through an online pharmacy. I personally use Platinum performance plus canine. If you go to platinumperformance.com they have all sorts of supplements for dogs, wildlife, horses and people. The one I get for the dogs has biosponge in it which is an absorbent and a gut calmer, it absorbs free radicals which are bad and can cause diarrhea and other stuff. The dogs really love it because it has a lot of different nuts in it and smells nutty plus it has glucosamine and chondroitin in it as well. I really like it and their people stuff is good too.
I'd talk with the pharmacist... it seems he/she should be able to tell you which one is best for humans anyway.

If you feed Eagle Pack, they do offer a probiotic that is like what's included in their foods... it's called Holistic Solution-

You'll find there are different ingredients in different probiotics if you compare the labels.
Oscar takes Perma-Clear by Thorne. It also comes in capsule form and I break it over his food twice a day. When I'm ready to order, I just go online and see who has it for the least expensive amount.

Laurie and Oscar
I just ordered some platinum performance powder. I am going to try that first since the price was better than most, and I could get a large size. I like the bio-sponge idea too. Thanks for all your input.
the probiotic we use is Dog Zyme (i think that is the spelling) and its a blue lid the green is the kelp mix the boys get .
Thanks for the information guys. Even more so after the Sheepiepalooza weekend, we've determined that Foz has an extremely nervous and sensitive tummy (just like his Mommy  ). We have an appointment with a holistic vet in about a week and I'll bring this list with me to find out which brand he recommends.
I've been lucky with Stewie.... LOL.... he gets into everything. He stole a box of chocolate cookies a few days ago and ate quite a few of them. His stools never even got soft let alone loose. Iron gut.

Funny you mentioned this. My vet was just telling me about the Fortiflora. He said it is a little better for the dogs than human probiotics. He said it was kind of splitting hairs but I will look into it anyhow. It's nice to know that there is a good flavor to it.
I was told the dog zyme was better than the fortiflora and having used both I find the dog zyme easier and they take it better - but they are all different.
I did order the other, but it does look like the dog-zyme may be the better product. I have bookmarked it for future ordering. How fast do you go through it with 2 dogs?
we have only been using it for a little over a month and we have three dogs on it. Morgan is 100 pounds and uses the most (four of the 1/4 tsp scoops) - for now. the person I bought it from uses it for newfies and said it should last quite a while. I haven't noticed that we have made a dent in the contents. I would assume 6 months or so, maybe more. it seems like a good investment I think I paid less than $20 for it. and we have one case of loss stool since we started using it which was not food related.
I already ordered the other stuff, but I will try that one too. It actually sounds like what I was looking for. The platinum stuff sounds more like just a general supplement, but I am trying that one first.

That's what I get for not waiting until all the answers were in. lol. No patience, me.
Just thought I'd share this for anyone searching this topic later on...
The product I had mentioned does come in a smaller container and it's called NZYMES®Fortified Bac~Pak Plus. I called the company to make sure before posting.

The $26 jar has 400 1/2 gram servings. You give 1/2 gram per day for a dog from 40 to 200 pounds so it would last a long time. It says to double or triple the amount given (of this product anyway) during times of stress. http://firstchoicenaturals.com/Index/sh ... d-50?gid=4

When we saw the on-call vet with Panda on Monday, I had asked if I could fax her the ingredients of the probiotic/digestive enzyme we're using to see if we should switch to Fastrack instead. I did this yesterday afternoon and just got a fax back. She said, "It looks like yours is better than mine. Yours is more broad spectrum... for long term use, I would use the one you have."

Of course, this is just one vet's opinion and it's only a comparison between two products. Too bad someone with knowledge about probiotics doesn't make a product comparison to help us make the best decision. :lmt:

Note: The vet we saw was in practice with our holistic vet who retired in January.
I was doing one stop shopping and also bought the probiotics from Flint River Ranch. I was using them all the time for everybody and for some reason I stopped .

I do keep them in the refrigerator once opened , just like human probiotics.

I now only use them for new rescues and when a dog is on antibiotics.

Please be careful with probiotics if your pet has kidney disease. I had to stop the FortiFlora as one daily packet contains too high amt of phosphorous which is dangerous to give with kidney damage. It also is 45% protein, pets with kidney disease should only have specific amts of protein, lower than the normal diet. These ingrediant was not on the label but I found it through research. Please research & check with vet.
I have had the best luck with Fortiflora which is made by Purina. I have one who has had a sensitive instestinal tract his entire life. At the 1st sign of soft stool, I sprinkle 1/2 packet on his next feeding & continue to do so until I see a definite improvement. I have been amazed how well it works.
I would definitly recommend NOVAnimal probiotic supplements, they are pretty affordable and of high quality. They have 9 different types of probiotics and one prebiotic. Also they are flavored, so your dog will go crazy for them!
Here's their website :http://novanimal.com/en-usa/
You can buy them online
