Supervision or a muzzle are about the only ways I know to do it.
Watch out for mushrooms... the darn things pop up overnight and can be bad. |
Fitzwilliam is like Scruffy - he loves to eat nature too! Those little granola-type things from trees are a big favorite, almost as desirable as used kleenex, if you can imagine that.
Since Fitzwilliam has a very sensitive system (and did become VERY ill - hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, in fact - possibly from random grazing) the vet recommended a muzzle. Which I tried on him and which provoked the most hysterical reaction I've ever seen from man or beast. So no more muzzle, my ol' nerves just can't take it. I've also tried catching him in the act and clapping my hands while calmly ( ) saying "HEY YA BIG GOOBERHEAD, STOP EATING THAT STUFF!" ... which is also less than effective; he's just learned to be really sneaky. So now - I have to watch him like a hawk when we're outside, and as soon as he gets that wily "I'm going to eat pieces of the outside whether mom likes it or not" look on his face, I put a leash on him. It's the only solution I've got so far. |
