The reason I ask - my daughter Lisa (the one in NY, who just graduated) is thinking of moving there and working. She has a friend who lives there and has turned down several nice jobs. She thought of Lisa, and invited her to move to Austin (Texas, not the one in MN!). Lisa asked me to post to you - my knowledgable friends!! - and get your opinion. She already was told it wouldn't be hard to get an apt that accepted pets, as her little Spike Lee will of course be going with her. Thanks in advance. |

It is a wonderful place to be if you like music.
Idiots were in charge of designing the roads. I-35 is always packed. Dallas is 4 hours +, San Antonio is an hour (I think). Lots of politicians, which is not good. College town, with lots of ugly, ugly burnt orange. Party town, with lots of drinking. Sixth street is where they go. Apts are very expensive, IMO, compared to other parts of the state. Partly due to the college students. Lots of young people and young married couples. Lake Travis is okay, beautiful homes there. Check out Hippy Hollow. Great eating places, with long lines. Very well educated population, with a significant number choosing to stay there and not able to get a job in their major - your waiter may have more degrees than you do! |
Thanks, I will forward the info on. |

Well we're also pretty familiar and husband will be there in less than 10 days to job hunt! Maybe they'll get a job together I wanted to say the above is VERY accurate description especially the ugly ugly burnt orange. Everyone knows maroon Aggies rock TX Anyway, outside of Dallas, Austin is considered an expensive place to live BUT when you compare prices there to almost any other state... it's the cheapest. ex: here I can get a run down 1100 sq ft home for 200,000, bad neighborhood with tons of things to bring property value down around you (across teh street are all homes for low income, industrial stuff across the street, etc, etc, etc) in tx, a 200,000 home can get you a mansion of sorts in some parts. For 120,000 you can live in a nice area in austin, nice neighborhood, beautiful pleasantville type neighborhood, 1500 sq ft, 4bdr, 2bth, nice backyard. This is not from just experience but doing countless home searches the past several months. To sum up, people love austin, can be pricey to find a home but the price of everything else is comparable to anywhere else in tx, and you can't beat the activities there, the friendly people, and beautiful! Of course I'm bias, but I've all over the world and outside of places with lots of hollywood stars (big cities in cali, etc) ...there's not a place I've been to where there are as many beautiful girls in one place than in TX. Weird thing to bring up, I know... but my husband and I go out here and can honestly say we can count the number of "drop dead beautiful" girls we've seen here on 1 hand ...and they were probably military (not from here). It's just easy to not care about your appearance here when no one does here (mostly b/c their priorities are different as they come here to be outdoorsy, etc). |

You almost have it correct. Crimson is the best color everywhere. |
One of the prettiest parts of Texas, Texas Hill Country. Yes, the state capital and a college town, is there nothing worse??
Climate......well both mild and hot. Winters are generally mild, no snow, but the summers can be brutal......hot and humid. OK, humid she probably understands. So all that escaping to the lake in August comes with the humidity. There is a Texas mindset.......but I'm thinking of those still close to the land. Them Urban Texans are a bit different breed, but still loveable. I think she needs to go down for a few days and "drink up the atmosphere" and I don't mean to fall face first into the Lone Star beer. Best seen both during a work week and of course on the weekend. Have her try the highways at rush hour and inbetween so she knows to keep her employment and housing "close to one another" if possible. |
