Imagine my SURPRISE when I arrived at the event and discovered it was the areas FIRST Womans' Roller Derby event (the Ithaca SufferJets vs the Syracuse Psycho Chicks). As soon as I saw all the healing injuries (arms and legs in casts) on sidelined players I should have turned and run as fast as my chubby legs could carry me. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I was committed to providing emergency assistance for the duration. Exactly 3 min and 20 seconds into the first "jam" a player was down and my services were called into action. Imagine my horror at finding the felled player with a tib/fib fracture complete with bones sticking through the skin. The rest of the evening was a bit less dramatic but just as busy. At the end of the evening I was asked if I was available June 15 for their next match. I politely declined Shortest lived Roller Derby EMT career in history. What I can't figure out is WHY the beautiful young girls would even consider doing this!!! |

Lovely, nothing like jump starting your evening with compound fractures! Messy too. |
haha....those women scare me!!! we are talking serious ablity to do some harm!!! it doesnt look like fun to me either....heck, when i roller blade with no one around, i can come home with trauma!!! no sense in doing it on purpose!!!!! |
You're lucky that's all you got!!
I had a friend who was roller derbying in the league down here. She broke her tib/fib playing too. She's also a bartender at the club we all go to. One night I was fixing the boot over her cast and she's telling me that she was one of FOUR broken limbs that night!! As she finishes telling me the story and I stand up from fixing the giant brace on her cast, the owner of the league comes over and asks if I want to be on the team!! Those people are crazy!! (We did come up with some good roller derby names though!!) And to top it off, the league down here does NOT have EMS on scene while they are derbying (or whatever you call it! ) I don't know how the building's insurance or the league is dealing with that. At least those girls had you!! OH AND! I'm really disappointed about the title of this post and it's content. I was so hoping that you had joined a league and there'd be a picture of you in some rockin' outfit and a pair of skates!! |
Yeah! Anybody tough enough to be an EMS would make a dynamite roller derby queen!
Actually it would be safer to play on some of the women's football leagues. They get their anger out without so many broken bones....yeah, tears and sprains, but fewer fractures. |
Ginny, i can just picture you wearing your hair in a braid with the elbow pads, helmet, knee pads, short shorts and a top with a push up bra!! |
Well, I had a picture to post but our moderators seem to be sleeping today |
no, he'a away for a few days.........so no Sheepiepalooza pixs either. |
WHHHHAT? Ron went away and didn't tell ME???????????????????
Where are the rest of our fearless mods???????? |
SheepiePalooza??? Guess we are the only two stuck behind the computer....where's my ice tea??? |
sighhhhhhhhhhh
I;m spending the weekend studying, the computer time is my "book break" |
Oh I love roller derby!!! Big Fan!
Ginny wished I had been there...of course not doing your job..but cheering for you while you're doing it. Marianne |
hahahaha, someohow I knew YOU would be a fan
I think the "professionals" have less injuries (serious ones anyway) than these girls. They just don't know what they are doing. |

This stuff is huge in Austin, tx! Anyway, funny b/c we just had our FIRST wrd event here in Anchorage too. ..........except all these girls were not as attractive as the ones I see on tv and let's say "not as fit" either. That's as nicely as I can put it. I imagine there were a lot of injuries. |
I was amazed at these girls, they were all very pretty and most were tiny (no wonder their bone break so easily) |
Here it is, at long last THE PROOF. My short but errant ROLLER DSERBY career
