Should I get this checked out or does she just love to sleep? What does your sheepie do? I know some are more active than other but what do you think? |
|
Sounds like a normal house dog to me. If mine are inside they are also asleep when not active.......no, they do watch me cook dinner in hopes I'll drop something.
However, when outside they watch the cars go by, bark at people and especially have frequent "discussions" with the neighbors' dogs. Short, loud discussions with a little running up and down the fence. And yes, they also sleep. |
Rheba can beat any dog...any day....in a sleeping contest! Don't tempt her because in the time that you challenge her to a "sleep-off" she'll already be dreaming! |
Bailey sleeps all day long. I work from home, so I'm here to witness it. He's active in the morning, he goes on his walk, then wanders around the yard for a while, chews his bone, plays with his toys, looks out the window. By 10 he's in nap mode. He might get up and join me in the kitchen while I eat lunch, but he just lays under the table. Then, back to napping outside my office door or under my desk (that's where he is now ) until his Dad comes home. His most active time is in the evening when we're watching TV - he requires that we play fetch with him while we're sitting on the couch. But, after a bit of that he lays down for a pre-bedtime nap. |
yup...same here....panda has breakfast and a quick poopy walk with dad...then naptime till i get home from work...(i know this from my days off..)..starts getting active again around 4 and goes till about 9...sometimes its rather annoying because she will pace and walk in circles around the house till about 9...even if we have played and walked her....then she crashes again till 5 am.. |
If there is something wrong with it my dogs have it too! lol |
Oh yes, they snooze their days away. Up for breakfast and play - maybe an hour and a half or two, then down for the day until maybe 4:30 or 5:00, then up for a few hours of play, then down for the night. Now if we go somewhere or do something, they can be up all day. But if it's just me tappity tapping on the computer, it's snore-ville. |
Mine do a lot of sleeping also...sometimes have to check their eyes to see if they still have them. lol They do spend a lot of time wondering during the night because I feel them climb on and off the bed through out the night. They snooze across my feet while I'm on the computer. When we go off in the Shaggy Shuttle they catch their naps there as well. All three are well rested. lol |
Yep, I've got a habitual snoozer as well. No one will believe he's so calm in the house, because when we meet people outside, walking around, or they come over, he gets all excited by the attention, but after the newness wears off, in about three minutes or so, he's asleep again, lol. Even when we got outside in the front yard, he will walk around for a minute, then come lay on my feet, on the swing, or on the sidewalk if all other options are in the sun. I think George and Velvet have sleeping competitons....and there is no clear cut winner. I only wish I could sleep as easily as them...... |
Oliver sleeps for england..
If it was an olympic sport Oliver would have a gold medal he will normaly get up around 8ish,but if i or himself, has to go out earlier he will not move, we have to slide him across the floor to get to the front door, even then when its open he will not get up He only ever seems to be awake when its food or walk. OOOhhhh and a big dreamer, dont know what he dreams of but its very active |
My Onyx is an AMAZING sleeper....she is the PERFECT dog for my husband, who on the weekends can easily sleep in until noon, or later. If my husband is in bed, my dog is in bed. I feel bad for people, like my mom, who have dogs that are up barking to play and go outside at the crack of dawn....Not my sheepie. There have been times when I am sure her bladder will distend because its morning and she's slept for 12 hours STRAIGHT, so I FORCE her to get up and go to the bathroom. I literally have to pull her off the bed with all my strength, after which she falls limply on the floor protesting and resumes sleep. Then I have to pick her up and force her to stand and then drag her out the door still half asleep. Once she sees the leash, she wakes up and gets excited. She sleeps all day long and all night long....but get her outside or around people and other dogs and she has more energy that I can handle!
I've often felt bad because she easily sleeps 16 hours a day, probably more....and I feel like if she had more stimulation she would not sleep as much. Unfortunately both my husband and I are gone most of the day. She's usually not home alone for more than 6-8 hours, and we take her with us everywhere when not at work. She does get alot of exercise though, we spend about 1-3 hours/week at the dog park and when the weather is nice we go rollerblading every day for at least 20 minutes of long distance running - which is great for her! Even though she sleeps alot and doesn't have a huge yard to run and play in, she is a very happy dog and gets lots of love and I think the long distance runs are a special treat that most dogs don't get. |
That is so funny to see this post! I told my husband today that I felt bad because we don't have a fence for SamSun to run around in and maybe if we did he wouldn't sleep so much. I feel better knowing that it's totally normal for sheepies to sleep that many hours a day. We are both gone for at least 9-11 hours every day. |
Please... someone tell me how to get Dutch to sleep more, she is a bundle of energy and after a long walk when we get back to the house she is still raring to go. |
How funny, Roger and I were just talking about this before I logged on. Max is a snoozer. All day. And night. And just like Roger, he snores and twitches in his sleep!
Good to know he is relatively normal. Lally |
I want one of these dogs that sleep.
Mine is 9 months and I have rarely seen him sleep during the day. This a normal half hour (repeat every half hour until bed time); he puts toys in my lap until I have a big pile of them or give in and play rolls about on the floor scratches, usually behind the ears 'preens' his private parts chews things, especially my things knocks everything over with his big nose knocks everything else over with his big tail barks at me barks at things outside bites me for attention humps me, or rather tries to eats everything he can, even the tiniest bits of fluff plays with his toys plays with my toys lol watches intently if I'm doing something interesting watches TV tries to stop me cooking, ironing, doing any housework because it's obviously evil slobbers over everything, especially things I need kept clean casually drags his tounge over my nice clean trousers licks my arms/ legs/ anything he can get away with sits and stares at me with his tounge hanging out but never, ever ever sleeps! I love him |

Send her to Florida...Violet, China and Asia will teach her the art of being lazy. lol |
Well, I feel a lot better. I've heard all the horror stories about the "insomniac dogs" that do nothing but play and I was beginning to think that Rheba is a big bum. Well it is official she is a BIG BUM with a BIG BUM! haha
I know why our sheepies sleep so much...they don't have access to sheep so they must sleep to count sheep! haha well, probably not....I think they just love sleeping! Hey one thing that really is weird about Rheba's nap time, she sleeps with her eyes open. Anyone else? |
Barney sleeps A LOT! |

'cause he's dreaming about panda |
Max is a great snoozer, and I'm fine with that!! He gets 2 walks a day and we try to take him on a few errands and a few trips to the dog park every week. But he really is quite lazy. He has a fenced back yard, but I'm lucky if I can get him to run back and forth one or two times!! When my husband and I throw the tennis ball, he just plops in the middle of the yard and watches us. So we end of getting all the exercise!! I never thought he'd calm down as a puppy, and now he's the most lazy dog ever

Okay, now you're weird!! |
IT's acutally kinda gross...Rheba's eyes are open although there must be a layer of some type of tissue that covers her eyes. It's kinda like a shark or alligator although she can't see. Instead of seeing an eye ball, it's just pink. It freaked me out when I first saw it but now I am used to it.
Weird Dog! |
noop Archie is active most of the time.
Fortunately he settles when we put him to bed and is good until we get up. Even very long walks don't do the trick, he can be pooped, two minutes rest and he's back on the bounce again. When he is alone though it does seem that he snoozes (as there is no one to wind up) although he has great fun trying to play with the cats! I wouldn't say he is a huge sleeper. Whereas some dogs will sleep he can spend hours chewing his Nylabone Currently pacing back and forth between kitchen study utility room and the garden as there is a small dog squeeking that he can hear! |
Chauncey's favorite words are nap & bed. Bob has him spoiled rotten. They are snuggle buddies. If you mention nap or bed he's like a bullet and on the bed waiting for you. He loves to watch TV while in bed ( no, no he's not spoiled at all )
He started napping more after he turned 2 or so. He also started to have less FRAP's about this time. The best thing is, since day one he's hated morning as much as I do. He gets out of bed when we do, about 8 or 9, but he staggers to the couch, hangs his head over the side with those bloodshot eyes. I swear he looks as if he's been on a 3 day drunk. Then after 30 mins or so you can get him to venture out for a pee, then another 30 mins or so hanging off the couch....he usually starts to perk up a little after the 1st hour. |
My two play hard....and then sleep hard...They enjoy racing around in the yard, wrestling and chasing, but when they are in the house , they are perfectly happy to dream the hours away...
The odd time I go for a nap, they join me and we all snooze together. |

Must be a family trait |
if I'm working they are sleeping. BUT when the kids hit home watch out. When I am off they will be sleeping but they follow everywhere and sleep in whaever room I am in. Out side they just want to help me. |
Max is a sleeper. Stretches out on my feet and snores the day away....
My feet must smell better than John's because he won't lay on his, only NEXT TO his. What a goof ball. |
I think about how active sheepies would need to be if they were really used as herding dogs all the time instead of pets and I am so confued. Maybe we should rename the breed to Old English Sleepy Dogs. What lazy bums!! |
