Miley has had bouts of diarrhea and vomiting and she has been licking her paws for the last 2-3 weeks. We had the vet look at the paws when we were trying to get to the source of the tummy issues. She thought they did not look too bad and wanted to focus on getting the vomiting and diarrhea under control. She just finished the meds this week and we still have very loose stool. I was thinking we had 2 unrelated issues going on but after reading through lots of post last night I am starting to think it may be a symptoms of a bigger problem. I had been feeding Nutro - so after reading that post I printed off the consumer affairs article and am bring that with me to the vets. Her paws are in bad shape. She cut them so badly she won't walk. I am just wondering if the food might be more of a problem. I want to make a list of questions to bring with me to the vets. Thanks |

I'm so sorry I don't have anything I can share on this problem. You might ask if full blood work should be done to see if she's otherwise fine.
You might consider putting socks on her unless the vet bandages her feet. It seems this might help prevent infection and will keep her from licking them. 3M paper tape has worked well here to keep the socks up/on... I put it on the fur and the sock and it seems to remove easier than most. A few of us have gone with Eagle Pack Holistic Select dog food but it can sometimes be harder to find. Lisa had told me before she rotated the varieties so we have been doing this for over a year now. The fish and duck formulas are supposed to be good choices for allergy dogs. We now rotate through all 4 varieties, opening a different variety once we finish a bag. Please let us know what you find? |
I've been thinking of Miley...
how did the appointment go at the vet? |
Our appointment went well - in that Miley let the vet trim up part of the pad that cut up so she would not rip the pad more. The vet put her on vetprofen for pain until the paws heal up and get tougher. The vet did an allergy blood panel and we will get the results in about 10 days.
Vet did say that she sees more paw problems in daycare dogs as they play very hard on rough surfaces. Miley goes to daycare 1 day a week and we have not had any previous problems. I am just anxiously waiting for the test results. Thanks for thinking of us. By the way - I remembered the sox trick from other email posts and the vet said Miley had a nice Mommy. Thanks to all the good avdivce here. |
Good girl Miley for letting the vet trim that up! I hope she's walking a little easier now... the pain meds will probably help to keep her more comfortable.

I've read that German Shepherds can have soft foot pads... NOT that this is the same cause but there are supposedly products out there that help to toughen the pads or protective footwear can be worn. It seems concrete would be especially hard on a dog's feet... Hopefully this is the one and only time Miley will have to deal with this! I hope you'll post again when the allergy test results come back. |
