I removed his E-collar when we got home, and he hasn't tried to lick down there. Does he really need it? It just seems to add to his discomfort. Also, he isn't drinking any water, do I need to keep encouraging him to drink? |

No water, he'll just throw it back up. Ice cubes at most.
Tomorrow is food time, but start off with half portion in the morning. He'll get used to the collar, trust me. It will be you and your shins that will suffer. I'd put it back on unless he sleeps in a tiny crate......and even then you can't watch him all night to see if he licks. Yes, they leave the scrotal sac on these days. He might swell back there making it look like his balls grew back. Cold compresses will help if it occurs....plus I'd call the vet. Otherwise, it's just there from now on. No problem, except when you are shaving him back there......"what's this??...oh yeah." |
When George got neutered I noticed his sac hanging down quite a bit, too. But it shrank over time, barely anything even visible now. My vet said very little food or water the first day as well. He didn't have an e-collar either, never tried to lick, but thats just George, he just wants to chill, lol... |
One more note about the E-collar........do make him wear it, if even for just a few days. He shoud get used to it so when he realllllly needs it, it won't freak him out. They can protect him from himself......for some future event. |
He is on pain med, but still whining. Should I put a little ice bag down there for him? Thanks so much, you guys. |
When I had Buddy done he was very swollen and sore down there. The left over skin will srink with time. I can hardly tell now where Buddy's Manhood was.
It is ok to have his collar off of him when you are with him and watching him but if you leave him make to he has it on!! It will bother him and he will try and lick it which will only make things worse. Make sure you watch the E collar, Buddy actaully hid his.......it took me forever to find it. It was all the way under my bed against the wall??!! I have no idea how he fit under there to hide it in the first place lol Buddy ended up having a bad reaction to the nutering and then he got all infected. When he layed down I would put a pillow between his legs to hold them open. It did make him more comfortable. I also would put a cool wash cloth over the spot, you may not need to do this though. He is going to be very sore for a while and out of it. Make sure he is not too active so he does not tear the stiches. That is about as much as I know. I hope it helps. Give him extra kisses from me. I hope he recovers soon. Good Luck, Christina |

If you put ice on it be sure to wrap it in a soft towel or something so his skin does not get too cold. You shouldn't have to ice it unless it is swollen, if it is not swollen maybe just a cool wash cloth. He will probably be really swollen tomorrow. |
When we had Zeke done he came home with a very
swollen sac. We were very lucky and he didn't bother with it at all. He never wore the collar and never had much pain really. One time he got up from laying down too fast and whined a little, but that was the first day only. The sac will shrink. It's not very pretty, but I have heard most shrink considerably. Zeke's never shrank all that much after the first two weeks but his had further to go than most (Even the vet was a bit shocked at the size of his job.) Zeke couldn't care less about that little dangle, and doesn't ever bother with it. It ends up looking like a thin bunch of extra skin. You will hardly notice it. Good luck - extra belly rubs! I have never used an e-collar for neutering.
The dogs I had never seemed to do more than normal licking after their surgery. I was told not to use a collar unless their was excessive licking. Usually by the end of day 2 after surgery my dogs were acting like nothing happened. |
Be sure to keep the incision area dry. Use the e-collar when he can't be strictly supervised. They can make things bad by licking and they can do it quickly.
I can only relate girl-dog experiences but the first night the twins both whined so I slept with them on the couch/bed. By the next morning I was pooped but they acted like nothing had happened. Hugs to your sweet boy. |
