Please take a few moments and read the thread (currently right below this one) "Buying a Quality Old English Sheepdog." It'll help guide you through the puppy buying process and help you ask the right questions.
Based on the breeder's website, it's really hard to tell what's going on but maybe some members in that area may be able to shed some light for you. |

I have been in the breed since 1985. I have actively been showing in competition (both conformation & performance events) since 1997, over 11 years now. I have never heard of this kennel. The name of the lady listed on the internet ad is not an OESCA member. I just received my newest OESCA Roster & she is not listed as an OESCA member. I traveled to shows in several states over the last 11 years & I have never competed against an OES with this kennel name. The price she is asking is considerably lower that what I know reputable breeders on the east coast & in the mid-west are asking. Please visit: http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamer ... ferral.htm This page will give you links to reputable breeders in your area. If you do not find any in your area, please feel free to contact me privately & I may know of reputable breeders in your area that are not listed on the breeder referral page. |
I have heard of Carolina Shores and I have purchased a puppy from them. They are a very loving and caring family that raises OES puppies in their home. I have had my puppy for over two years and she is the sweetest OES I have ever had. She is show quality even though I do not show. I have been to many shows before and you don't have to get a puppy from someone that shows to get a quality dog. I would recommend Carolina Shores to anyone looking for a great puppy. I will be calling them again soon to get another puppy for myself. Their are many snobs out there when it comes to breeding dogs and showing dogs. Carolina Shores is not in the snob group so maybe that is why some have not heard of them. |

Now...I wonder who this person is????? A NEW guest just happens to reply, rather insultingly, to a NEW thread from a NEW guest, about an unknown Breeder?????? ((what are the odds?????????????????))) |

Yes, that must be it It's pretty simple. Ask for the following health certifications on the parents: OFA or PennHip, CERF, thyroid and ideally BAER (ask Kathy/Donners Mom how many deaf puppies she gets into rescue in the Carolinas ). If said breeder can't produce actual DOCUMENTATION that the above health testing of the parents has taken place, and/or has no idea what they stand for, keep looking. Any worthwhile breeder knows the ins and outs of the health issues of the breed at a bare minimum and there is no snobbery involved in wanting a healthy dog. If you think the health testing isn't necessary or only for the "fancy" show dogs, feel free to search the forum for sad tales of severly dysplastic young dogs from breeders who couldn't be bothered to x-ray the parents' hips and whose owners are trying to decide between conservative management and surgery. You should always ask for copies of the parents' pedigrees as well. Then you can go to www.offa.org and look up the hip and eye and thyroid certifications for yourself by virtue of the parents' registered name or registration number. It's worth it to do your homework upfront. Good luck! Kristine |
I think there's a lot of reverse snobbery going on, really. People that convince themselves that they know better than people that have been involved with the breed for decades. I think the majority of an attitude like that stems from either sour grapes, lack of instant gratification after trying to deal with a responsible breeder, general ignorance or lack of motivation to actually get involved with the breed except for to provide lip service.
However, anyone that can judge an OES at a show from the sidelines, is beyond amazing. To be able to see the structure of a dog without even touching it under the hair is a Rainman-like ability or a superpower. |

Do you understand the importance of exhibiting a dog? It goes far beyond bragging rights. It is a costly undertaking in both time and money and tells the breeder how her/his dogs compare to the breed standard. Sure there are some snobs, just as there are snobs in the cat world, the horse world and every other world. And no, I am not a breeder. |

Thank you, Holly. Very well put & to the point. And the reason none of us have heard of them is not because they are not snobs.....it's because they are not out there competing with their dogs. |
This is not a recent post for information about the breeder. The post was back in May of 2008 and then a Guest decided to add their two cents over a year later. |

Yes, and like Val said, isn't that interesting? What to look for in a breeder bears repeating, again and again and again, because people still aren't getting even very basic things like the importance of health testing. We just had another case locally, person who should have known better, but got taken in by a cute website. Kristine |
Well, doing rescue down here in the Carolinas...
I watch certain "puppies for sale" sites to try to keep up! (key word try) These dogs are ALWAYS listed as expecting puppies. I also know of a certain pup from one of the litters that had megaesophagus. This is hereditary so, I would definately do some research. Well said points from the breeders posting...as I always say I leave it to the ones that know what they are doing! I do appreciate all your years of knowledge and experience. Well, I just realized the post was a year old too Decided to keep this post up for future referance! |

had megaesophagus. I remember that puppy! It was back in April. I was so happy he found a good home because I had been reading up on the condition just in case http://www.geocities.com/bailey_chair/ and http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/megaesophagus/ Ingrid with Southeast rescue found a home for the little guy- http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displa ... d=13417754 . Megaesophagus is a serious condition that requires a devoted and dedicated family. The couple that adopted him sounded like just that Has anyone heard how this special little guy is doing? |
Just some things to consider from one buyer to another... one who has rescued, purchased from a byb and also a show breeder. I've experienced all three worlds now.

That's the problem with OES puppies... the packaging is always beautiful or at least quirkily cute even when they aren't well bred and are hiding congenital conditions. It's a fact, people buy from people they like. Many backyard breeders and maybe even puppymillers are indeed friendly people. Some buyers may feel a show breeder is being snobby by asking all the specific questions and requiring answers rather than just asking simply if the buyer has the money. A good show breeder has a bigger reputation to protect so they are more careful about who gets one of their puppies. And they don't want the dog ruined by the wrong family because the breeder will be getting the dog back if the family can't or no longer wants to keep it. They also don't breed their herd of bitches to their one and only male every time the bitches come in heat (I know of a proven stud from a neglectful byb that was cryptorchid ). So the good show breeder doesn't have as many puppies from one bitch as some bybs do. Rescues are a good place to ask about a specific breeder. Former breeding stock has come through rescue with tick diseases left untreated, uncorrected entropion, injured. Neglect and plain disregard in my opinion. Do we really want to support the mentality of "use them and dump them"? But this is getting off topic... I don't know the breeder mentioned so people have to do their homework and not just buy from someone because the puppy is cute and the breeder is nice. There will always be bybs and some are much better than others. Buyers need to help raise the standard that we'll accept by demanding certain things in the puppies we buy. |

Yeah... he's a cutie pie.
I've got to ask if there's been any news on him. |

Speaking from my own point of view all of the breeders posting also raise the pups in their home(that is kind of a given) Nobody has said anything against the kennel, just facts.. Please feel free to read the whole conversation. We love to have new folks and hear about puppy antics. (of course pictures are always welcome ) I am not a breeder...I do rescue and totally support the breeders that are out to better the breed! It takes alot of work! Hope to see more of you and Edward! Feel free to join and have fun, lots of great info and fun on here! |
Personally, I feel like we are being spammed. |
I'm late to the party, but we also purchased from Annette Shore. We got Charlie back in 2010 and he's a GREAT dog. No health problems (he's three now) and though I've had dogs for the past forty years he's my first OES. If this dog is representative of the breed in general I'll never own anything else. Our experience with Carolina Shores was exceptional and couldn't have been beaten by a breeder with 50 years experience in my opinion... |
Horrible "Breeder" in my opinion!! only wants your money, does not care if you want to see the puppies environment, or where they came from (like the parents being on site). Everything we were willing to do to make this breeder more comfortable, was just impossible for her. seems like a puppy mill business or a scam. She just wanted to deliver a puppy I saw online, my mother is a Border Collie breeder so I know what a good breeder is suppose to do, she did nothing. Terrible business but why would this breeder care if shes only delivering puppies. If your into horrible puppy mills ( which they will have papers ) than go with this breeder. Good luck. |
II have a female from here. You're right that she only contacts you when she wants to, and doesn't go out of her way. She will not allow you to come to the "house" to see the puppies or the parents. Also she states they are AKC registered. The parents are, but unless she wants to breed from the litter, or show she will only allow them to be registered as PAL AKC. When questioned she states that they never said how they could be registered with the AKC I don't think this person is very honest, and only has her best interest in mind. |
Hi all! I know this is a super old thread and many may not use it but thought I'd give my experience with Carolina Shores. I've had nothing but a good experience with them, Annette has responded to every message I've sent and made sure the lifestyle my family and I live would fit well with an OES. I know that everyone's experience isn't going to be the same but my experience does not line up with some of the accusatory ones on here. If anything, it would make me wonder if persons posting some of the negative feedback weren't approved to purchase a puppy or something didn't go their way. I would absolutely purchase another pup from her if the occasion arose. |
Thanks for sharing your experience |
