You see, my sliding patio door fell off it's track last Nov...sigh, yes Nov and smashed in a million pieces one stormy night. I was letting the dogs out and it was stuck so I gave a tug and the door flipped off the track and fell out. I was home alone and had no choice but to lift the now lighter door as the outside pane smashed. Jagged edges all around which I later had to fix so as dogs or humans wouldn't get cut, plus clean up the million pieces of "safety glass" on the porch. It was midnight and I couldn't knock on neighbors doors for help. The following day the insurance company said I'd have to pay 500 detuctable plus pay more for premiums since I would have a claim. I decide to opt out as sheesh the cost of a new doors is about that price! I decide to purchase new door but really didn't want to purchase ugly brown patio for 500 would rather get french ones but can't afford them at this time as they are double the price. Besides now they only sell white ones and my windows would look so ugly in comparison. I'd rather wait until I can replace the entire thing for what I really want but for now just need 1 door. I thought well I can live with a single panel but the stupid broken wheel which caused the door to intitially fall off the track needed replacing. It was with dismay my neighbor and I discovered out of all those stupid doors mine was the type that needed the glass to come out for the new wheel to be installed. Groan. Urg would have been so easy to replace the wheel but I can't take out the glass and replace it. I stop at the glass place..it will cost 150 for service to my home plus cost of new wheel. Groan again. They say I can bring it in and they'll fix it but how can I leave no back door on my house and what to do with all three of my boys when the guy is at my place trying to fix the door?? More grumbles! Others that have no pets wouldn't think this a problem but for me a disaster. My neighbor tells me our new neighbor has a door which I can have. The old man and I lug it over. Those double panel sliders are heavy!! Before we lift it up my stairs I notice the opening is on the WRONG side. We lug it back. I stop at used building supply stores..they only sell 2 doors plus frame. I only need one ugly brown door! The frame wouldn't fit in my van anyhow. I check Craigs List daily - everyone wants me to purchase both doors. I would have, but then would have the problem of lugging 2 doors out of my van plus getting rid of the extra one plus my old one. Means asking neighbors to help me do lots of lifting. I dislike asking for too many favors and those doors are so heavy! Most want me to take the frames as well. More grumbles. Now that I'm debating to put up my house for sale I realized I would have to purchase new slider and then have to paint all my pre-existing window frames to match. Urg as if I need more stuff to do??? Yesterday, could it be? Someone was selling a single right hand lock brown slider door!!!! I call...he's far away..cost 40 dollars in gas getting there (would have been 20 but I keep missing the turnoff on the freeway) He charged me 25 dollars. Yeah!!!! no worries about what to do with the dogs as I merely have to place them in another room for mins and pop the new door in!!! I can now lock my door - ha ha too late would be burglers! I don't have to use super muscle strength to even close the thing. I now longer have a big gap at the top due to the broken wheel! Who woulda thought a single ugly brown patio door would cause me so much problems? Who woulda thought I'd be so excited about an ugly brown slider door? Who woulda thought this was the highlight of my weekend? Groan, sometimes I dislike being a grownup. Marianne |

Marianne: I am glad luck was with you. We used to have a Home Improvement business and those patio doors are a pain...many people with problems. I was going to suggest if you where going to change the door out to change to a French Door. Anyway, I am glad it worked out. I have two of those brown sliding doors. lol They are still in use. My niece had the type that slides into the walls of the house so the whole back of the house would open to the pool...My hubby had a heck of a time fixing one set of those for her. It was worth it though.
Good luck with your house sale. |
Marianne, you amaze me! |
I wish you lived by me! I could really use your expertise!
This past weekend we tiled our kitchen floor. We got a killer deal on the tile (48 cents per square foot), but wanted to wait until after my marathon to put it in due to time constraints. We thought about hiring someone to do it, but at $4.50/sq ft and a little over 200 sq ft to tile, we figured we could learn real fast! So, we tore up the linoleum, and what did we find? Our patio door was rotten through the casing, the subfloor, and one support. So, before we could lay the tile, we had to replace the door, subfloor, drywall, and support...wow, much larger project than just tiling. Long story short, we learned a lot last weekend, and now have a beautiful, rot-free kitchen! I'll have to post pics, we are so proud! |
Glad I'm not the only one struggling with a patio door! The wooden door leading to my front patio sticks and has warped. I decided to splurge and get a new door with the blinds insider the glass , thereby getting rid of the ugly verticals that I keep wanting to rip out of their track. I would also gain 5 inches in my tiny kitchen. I have th edoors on hold at the shop, just can't get an installer to put them in!!! |
Marianne,

JCC - I can feel your pain and I can't wait to see photos of your new updated kitchen floors and door! How come when you do a minor repair in most cases you then notice other things? Must be Murphy's Law!
SheepEDog - Oh wish I had mentioned it sooner - I'm forever grumbling about my back door. I'll know who to ask next time! Changing it seems so complicated. That forum Ron mentioned was soooo helpful and I'd encourage members to glance at it should they ever need help with renos. Last weekend I tiled and repainted my bathroom, few weekends before dug drainage ditches , this weekend will be installing laminate in downstairs bedroom. One day I'll be sitting drinking Pina Coloda's enjoying the fruits of my labor...but that's in the future. Marianne |
