heads up

Guys - if you haven't already, please make sure that your vet knows that you can put them in touch with OES rescue if needed.

We had a scary case just recently where some people took their one year old OES to their vet to have him euthanized because he jumps on their kids. Fortunately their vet didn't want to put down a perfectly healthy and normal, albeit untrained, puppy, so talked them into letting them try to place him and knew how to get in touch with OES people.

He's been placed.

Still gives me the chills.

What is wrong with people???????
All the vets I've known would never consider putting down for such silliness! I shudder to think there are those who actually would 8O

Good suggestion........medical records should have this in place, least both owners died and the dog is orphaned. Should also be in the home where emergency people would first look as well as in one's will or other such papers.

I hope this pup gets a better second home.

Fear not, he did.

The same thing happened here in Baltimore. I got a call from a vet tech who had an 8 month old male who was left to be put down because he grabbed the owner by the arm. The vet didn't feel the dog was truly aggressive, just bratty and untrained. I picked him up, and NEOESR was able to place him in a home where, with proper training, he is doing well.

When I think of how close this lovable animal came to losing his life, it gives me the chills.
A similar thing happened with Daisy, the OES I grew up with.
She was a little over a year old and was brought into the Vet to be PTS.
The reason was, her owners were getting divorced and they couldn't decide who would get the dog, so they decided to put her to sleep. 8O
Luckily my cousin's friend worked for the vet and that is how we got her.

I give my card to all rescue people, feed stores, and shelters with OES rescue on the back - good thing I did because someone remembered me last year when a family brought their perfectly fine OES 2 yr old girl in to be pts for nipping the little girl. As I've said on here before the poor dog was so matted with such severe urine burn her paws were ulcerated, she also suffered from a previously broken leg that had never been set. she found a wonderful home and is the happiest dog in KY (with the exception of my Patch)
I started working for a vet 10 years ago just
in time to get our Mandy!
The vet was going to keep her but, said she didn't
like her dogs so......as we fell in love we adopted her!
She was the best dog and could have had a bad ending!
Alot of good dogs are euthanized for different reasons!
I wish shelters had more volunteers to contact rescue but,
they don't!
With our economy crashing alot of people can not keep their dogs!
Shelters more than ever are filling up!
Alot of people really don't know that rescues exist!
Even if individuals can help with the contacts that would be awesome!

I can't take any credit - Joan told me after the fact. My vet's mom, an OES breeder, was in the area, and she and another OES person took care of it.

Did start us thinking though. There is a group called WI dog rescue that puts together a directory of all of the breed and all-breed rescues in the state and distributes it to the shelters and so on, but we're wondering how to best make sure all of the vets in the state have our contact information as well. One of our rescue people is a vet/OES breeder, so I'll see what she has to say about it. When I told my holistic vet about some of OESCA's health initiatives, he told me there is a way to reach most vets electronically. I'm not sure if that would be an appropiate avenue or if we could target just WI vets, but I'll find out.

Most non-rural/reasonably close to metropolitan area shelters aren't really an issue here. We're already importing young dogs and puppies in from out of state to place, so they when they get a purebred dog in they won't call us unless the dog has health, old age or behavioral strikes against him. An agility friend of mine was the operations manager of a shelter where I volunteered and once explained to me, when I asked her why she hadn't called me to at least help groom an OES they got in, that the purebreds tend to be rare (OK, I knew that), so they're a good draw for the shelters to bring people in and maybe get them to take a look at the less adoptable dogs; larger, older, mixed breed. Therefor they prefer to place them themselves.

We're not about to argue with them, but another suggestion one of our volunteers had is to offer the shelters an OES specific packet for their adopters. Breed information: care for, characteristics, rescue and local club contact information etc so there's a support network if they need it.

I'm also thinking of canvassing the state and putting together training classes/training club information for the dogs we adopt out, but also to post on the club's website once it's up and running, since lack of training/behavioral problems seems to be one of the main reasons we get OES surrendered. It might be a bit hard to keep up to date but maybe we can prevent some surrenders that way.
