We are having a big problem with our 10.5 months old Paxton. He has been refusing to walk on a leash within our neighborhood. When we take him to the park and he can not smell a way home he is perfect. He walks like a champ. Big problem!!! We not always have the time to drive him to the park and he just won't walk otherwise. Thank you for any suggestions, Magdalena |

Shane would do that..........hated to leave home and then didn't want to come home. I never did solve the riddle for coming home.....I resorted to bribes......walk 10 paces and get a small bit of dried liver, walk 20 paces for another........sigh.
Leaving it helped to go a different direction each time, but one has only so many options. Does he have issues with somebody or think in the neighborhood? Well, you be assertive, don't talk, just position the training collar up high, top of the neck, not the bottom, and go. No pleading, just go. Is there some other dog who will walk with you?? (and their owner) Could be your boy needs a leader for awhile. |
Thank you : ) |
Our 9 month old is OK until he has had a toilet- then he urgently wants to go home. I stopped feeding him after walks and don't give him a treat or attention as soon as we get in so he has no reason to want to be home so bad- I think he would just much rather be running in the park than walking on the streets too. Continue taking him out as usual, he will probably grow out of it. |
Blue just acts like a clown over excited claims down half way through our walk. |
They don't clean your streets with any chemical cleaning solutions do they?
Or has he had any incidents with other dogs that may have unsettled him in a particular location? Our 9 month old Archie has always been a good walker (read puller) both new and familiar routes, he knows his favourites and he also obeys when I say not today etc to a particular direction. I do continually talk to him and always have, and he is always open and friendly to all other dogs - even the ones that want to bite him Maybe your dog is lazy/clever likes the park etc but prefers a lift there? |
lol : ) Yes, I think that is right. He is lazy in a clever way. I noticed that he likes to be carried sometimes and tries to train us to see how far he can get with his persisting personality. Today was a good day. My husband and me took him for a walk with a bag of chicken. My husband led him while I held his leash. My husband reinforced him almost every 2 minutes for a good behavior. He heeled almost the whole walk.
Thank you everyone for your opinions and suggestions hopefully our Paxton will keep up the good work. M |
My dog, Max, was very difficult when he was a puppy, I used to have to carry him part way home, maybe he got tired, but I think he was playing me!! He's still very stubborn at times, he's 3 yrs now. My husband has very successful walks with him because he doesn't try anything with him. But he still tries to work me he'll just plop down during a walk and won't move, obviously I can't carry him anymore, so I always carry a piece of string cheese with me and I do bribe him, whatever works
