Sheepdogs and diarrhea

I have noticed that many people have problems with their dogs having diarrhea. Mine was constantly having bowel problems horrible gas as well. After many different brands (high grade) I decided to go raw.

I am not trying to convert anyone. It isn't for all. But I just wanted everyone to know this option and how well it has gone for me.

Laika may have had diarrhea 3-4 times in the last year and half. Usually because we are not at home; traveling or something when it happens. So from a dog that had constant problems to hardly any it has been fantastic.

I also would suggest talking with your vet or a holistic vet first; which I did.

Books that I found really helpful is:

I am having the same results and we switched (or in Marley's case are switching - the picky Miss makes me cook her raw food :) ) for the same reason.
I started cooking it at first. More for me  But I have gotten over my squeamishness. Time saver too! The veg isn't cooked either just zapped in the food processor.
Marley lost over 8 pounds when we first tried to switch her - I have to now mix some of the rolled food in her dish to get her to eat the "raw", most of which has to be cooked. she loves stinky raw fish though :)
You could always try mixing in cottage cheese or yogurt.

Laika was less than 60 lbs and now she is a solid 70 lb. Her fur gleams.

She won't eat cottage cheese and I do mix in yogurt.
I never really had a problem getting Izzie to eat her raw food. If I introduce something new she is sometimes hesitant, but usually will jump right in.

We too went raw to combat poop issues. 8)
We're raw, too. It has helped tremendously with Bingley!!!
Wow that is great to see others doing the raw diet. Do you buy commercial products or do it yourself? I don't have any problems with Laika being picky she will eat raw veg as treats even.
What sort of raw foods are we talking about?

Mine get dried biscuits with dog meat most days. About once a week or 2 weeks I give them some tinned tuna in with their biscuits, and they get a sunday roast on the monday, usually left over chicken, veg and gravy and roast potatoes.
Some examples; all of it raw:
raw ground beef or stewing beef
bison bones
turkey/chicken necks
organ meats
eggs and egg shells
as well as vegetables.

Sometimes I get

Sounds like Morgan - as lng as it isn't still moving he'll eat it.

I do buy a mix - remember we have three dogs on raw (the Irish Setter is too set in his ways to switch) and the boys are big eaters. But I also buy chicken hearts, gizzards and livers and other organ meats to supplement the mix. the boys also get chicken backs at each meal.

Of course Miss Marley eats all the family leftovers - cause they are cooked :)

Miss picky did snag a bird that had hit the door and gotten stunned. I took that away from her though because I was afraid of parasites. SHe did look funny with a face full of feathers :0
Pepsi loves birds. We have birds constantly nesting on our chimney and a few times Pepsi has managed to catch them. The last one I took from her mouth, didnt fancy sitting and watching her eat a freshly killed bird, blood as well. Ugh!

Yogurt and supplements in the morning - mix and bones at night
Izzie loves tripett.

We do part mix from Hare Today and anything I can get at a good price from all the local stores.
We have been trying raw with Edgar. He loves it but it hasn't helped with the diarrhea. It has almost completely gotten rid of his itching. Which nothing else had. But we are thinking about stopping for a bit because of living in a vacation rental for the next three months. He keeps getting the spurts on and off and the whole place has carpet. We don't want poop explosions on the carpet. So we are going back to an hypo-allergenic dog food. Once we get out of the vacation rental I would like to try it again and try to figure out what is causing his going back and forth from diarrhea to hard clumps.
I was told to use the most basic diet first and when it clears up then start adding a little of different foods one at a time, to see what happens. That is how I found out too much fish for her isn't good .

Add a probiotic powder to his morning emal - its worked wonders with Morgan who has always had horrible bouts of diarrehea ever since he came from the breeder (with coccidia)
You might ask your vet about adding a good probiotic/digestive enzyme. We use this one-

And 1/2 teaspoon of cholostrum twice a day-

We haven't had loose poops in a few years... they each get this twice a day (with each meal).
