Their Abby is I think 12 or 13 weeks old now and they say she's great at pooping outside, but that's only because that's easier to control (ie: she eats, she poops!). But the peeing is trickier. They say she'll go outside and squat and then come back inside and within minutes she'll squat again. They said she just doesn't seem to know (or care) when she needs to pee. Is this just a puppy thing or should she be starting to get it soon? |

They really have no control over those muscles til 16 weeks or so, they don't usually know they have to pee or poop til that moment, or you might see a bit of circling and if they can get her out fast enough then tons of praise, as you know.
Sometimes with puppies one day it appears a little light goes off and they just "get it" but constant vigilance of course. I didn't have a lot of luck crate training for that purpose so I paper train now. Just for a few weeks, then make the papered area smaller and closer to the door. When the pup goes to the paper (when they are past the point of going every five minutes) move a peice outside that was already peed on and again tons of praise. This method has worked better than all the other methods I've tried. |
it is almost like when changing a baby's diaper and they pee on you. Again 16 weeks seems to be the area for their control. |
just what stacey said....i move the paper closer and closer to the door, then finally outside.....then just when you think theyll never get it, a light goes off!!! happy day!!! |
We used to take Summer out on the hour, there are 3 of us and we took turns. We waited with her until she weed, and then went into raptures saying "clever puppy!" and if only 30 minutes later she looked as if she wanted to go out we went again. in the end she just clicked and wees on command. She will get it honestly it just suddenly dawns on them what you want! |
I have two peeing machines at the moment Mine are just over 13 weeks, we are hoping it will click soon and they develope more controll and no more rivers flowing in the house.
My two do the same, pee outside and when they come back in they still manage to flow again. Sending my two over for abby to have a pee fest with |
I got my Ben when he was eight weeks old. It had been decades since I had a puppy and had forgotten just how challenging housebreaking could be. He would be fine in the crate for hours, but would come in the house, start to play, and in twenty minutes or so he would wet in the house.
This went on until he was 5 months old. I had a big Easter dinner planned and was really worried he would be watering the carpet the whole time. Crating wasn't an option, because everybody wanted to see the puppy. You know, he was a good as gold. Not one accident, and he hasn't had but a couple accidents since that Easter, and he is now 3 1/2 years old. It was like a lightbulb went off "Oh, you DON'T want me to pee in the house. Have faith. |
A lot of puppies pee twice (I just fostered three) They pee then 15 min or so later they pee so try letting her stay out past the first pee. I found this out the hard way Just a thought. |
sending duffy your way to the pee party |
Simon was 4 months old when he finally "got" it. We were taking him out every half hour to 45 mins. This makes for a VERY long day. I remember one day, dh was walking him in the yard grumbling that it took forever for this dog to pee. I stuck my head out the window and told him to tell Simon to go potty. He did and Simon did. The expression on dh's face was priceless. |
whopee 2 days duffy got it , but of course i take him out every hour during the day |
I got Sadie at 4 months and have had her almost 4 weeks now and still trying to get her trained. When I take her outside, it doesn't seem to matter how long I keep her out, 10 minutes to 3 hours, she doesn't pee and then I bring her in and she pees within 5 minutes. She has been pooping outside most of the time, but still poops inside now and then. Lately, when I catch her squating inside, I yell Hey and bring her outside but she doesn't go. Sometimes she will potty outside on command, but not consistant. Any tips are welcome. |
sigh.......................... my boy is JUST short of his 1 year bd. He understands he needs to go out to pee and will go to the door....... but he FORGETS to tell ME he needs to go out.....
I can be sitting 3 feet away and he just doesn't "click" beauty not brains........ |
When we trained Abby we put a string of bells on the door. Every time we went out to go potty we rang the bells. Didn't take her long to fiqure it out. She was one also that didn't know how to tell you she had to go potty till we started the bells. After about 1 week she would nudge the bells to let you know it was time to go out. |

OK but can I send Sophie there too??? LOL OMG I am so glad someone posted this. We have never got a puppy this young before so I was begining to think there was a problem. Our dogs were always 3 or 4 months old and were a piece of cake compared to miss wee wee butt. THe kids have given her several nick names. Soaky sophie, puddle puppy, the whizzer, piddler, puddle maker, etc. My daughter, who trained Cheyenne, says see Cheyenne was sooo much smarter, She learned to pee outside in only a couple weeks with very few accidents. |
Calypso got the bells........... she can go out, and come back in and ring em again! I think she just likes to hear them personally sometimes .......
Checkers??? Nope dumb as a rock between those beautiful ears............ Can he go to the pee fest too?!! |
Don't feel bad Ali and the rest of you......when my cocker Max, was alive...we nicknamed him "Sir Pee's Alot". He took FOREVER to housetrain. I'd let him out...and he would just stand there and look at me like "DUH...I don't need to pee". As soon as I would let him in...and turn my back...the "pee fest" would start. Grrrrrrr He finally caught on...but OMG...how frustrating!!! I feel for ya! |
My Paxton is almost 3 months old. We got him when he was 2 months old. In the beginning is was very hard-- we took him out every 30 minutes for two weeks. After few weeks he finally got it. He runs to the door when he needs to relive himself, no puppy accidents around the house, sometimes a little drips of pee while he tries to get to the door. We also started to cradle him at night and when we are out and that seems to have a big, positive impact on his accidents. He tends to hold longer.
Best, Magda |
We have a five month old lab and a four month old lhasa. They both ring the bells to go out. Unfortunately that can be every five minutes. The lab will ring about every five to fifteen minutes for hours on end and go pee each time she goes out. How do I get her to wait longer? She holds for hours in her crate. No accidents in her crate ever. Lhasa does alot better but is starting to copy the lab. Ready to shred the bells. Lol. Have had vet run all kinds of test because sometimes the urine is not concentrated at all - no color - no smell, but everything has checked out okay. Anyone have any dogs like this and have they started to do better as they have gotten older. |
