my two have diarrhea on and off, and for no particular reason. Did hte vet do tests to make sure it isn't a parasite causing this, or a virus?
Mine just seem to have sensitive stomachs; I give the a spoonful of pumpkin with thier food, and it helps. I use the canned kind; unsweetened. Just pumpkin puree. Also in the past, when it was worse, I would boil chicken with rice for them, and that helped. |
I also agree with the canned pumpkin and boiled chicken.
I have never heard of giving them bread. Any time I give my Pepsi bread it causes more tummy problems. |
A human drug called LOPERAMIDE (in the US "Imodium") is generally safe for dogs.
For an adult sheepdog, you can give the usual adult dose, one 2mg caplet after each loose stool, no more than 4 per 24 hours. |

AGREED; but only if your dogs has been tested for the MDR-1 and is negative. A postive result means that Imodium could kill your dog. Its REALLY infrequent that a dog is positive, but I was unwilling to risk it. |
thanks for the reactions
It 's still not over with the diarrhea with Youri After a call with the vet we're now giving him only boiled water ( cooled down ) from chicken fillet ( bouillon ) ( for 24 till 48 hours ! ) loperamide or imodium will stop but will not cure so I read on the internet. besides I heard that it is not always a good medicin for old english sheepdogs So also recalls darth snuglle We thought that mayby it's an infection with giardia a flageaat the symptoms looks like that, but we are not sure then mayby antibiotcium will solve the problem but we better ask first the vet. greetings and a big hug from poor Youri |
at this link you can find a list of the "problem drugs" that you will want to avoid, if You don't know the status of your sheepdog regarding the MDR1 mutation:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/drugs.aspx I know there are substitutes to most, if not all of them that your vet can prescribe. |
