Members in South Ontario, what is a Good Place to Stay?

We are heading out (driving) from MN to NY next week for daughter Lisa's college graduation. 2 vehicles, 8 people. We will be quite the caravan.

We plan on crossing into Canada via Detroit/Windsor and stopping at Niagara Falls on the way. Day 1 we want to make at least part way across the Ontario part - so it looks like the London area is about halfway across?? We will spend the night , and need some ideas for a reasonably priced place to sleep. Not fancy, as we will be tired and just wanting a clean place to stop for the night, and leave right away in the morning. What town or specific place could you recommend??

Also - I see there is both a bridge and a tunnel at Detroit/Windsor - which is better to cross?

Any other good input is welcome, of course! :D
Thanks in advance.

I think that on the way back you should take the southern route and dip down from New York into PA!!
Aww too bad you want to stop in London, that's too far for us to make a trip to visit. :(
Motel 6 is an option in London. It's just off the highway, and there are restaurants, gas stations and all that nearby. It's not terribly fancy, but it's pretty new and should have nice clean rooms. Cost runs somewhere in the $65-$90/night range, depending on number of people per room and how picky you are about bed size.
Niagara Falls is only 20 minutes from me. Are you staying the night in the Falls or just passing through?
The tunnel or the bridge depends on the time of day. Both clog up pretty good because of security during rush hour. I prefer the bridge because the tunnel is creepy to be deadlocked in.

Wait, I think I was thinking backwards. Are you coming up through Michigan then onto Canada? There's MAJOR work on I-75 right around the bridge and it will slow up down big time, no matter what time of day it is. For that reason, I'd say take the tunnel because it'll be easier to get to without all the detours.

You may even want to cross into Canada in Sarnia. I think that's only an hour out of London.
Ah, you guys are great!!

Jill - yes we are coming through Mi, then onto Ontario. Thanks for the construction hint about the bridge - definitely will avoid that. Our crossing will be late afternoon - depending on when we leave here. Dang - rush hour!!! Maybe we need to adjust a bit. What time is the worst for tunnel delays? From our house to Detroit is 700 miles - roughly 11.5 hrs without stops. We have 3 drivers for each car, so we should be able to cruise. 8) We planned on leaving early am on Thursday -maybe we need to leave before 3am to get there before rush hour. Ugh...
Have to check out Sarnia too - is that busy??

Amber - you are Welland? - I saw that is real close! Yes, we are just stopping to be tourists for a bit. None of us have seen the falls, so we planned on a stop. We thought to get up fairly early, and stop in the morning there. Then continue onto Lisa's (Newburgh NY.) She wants us to get there Friday early, but we told her we were not passing the falls without stopping! Any info or websites I should check out about the Falls?

Craig - thanks for the info. A Motel 6 or something like that is what we were thinking. After 13+ hours on the road, we aren't going to be that picky!

Stacey - Where are you in relationship to London?? I just don't think we can get much farther than that on day 1. Friday we are heading east - does that help??

Mandy - We do plan on the south loop on the way home. I haven't even started to plan that route! HELP!
Sarnia is less busy than Windsor and, I think, makes the route to Niagara more direct. Definitely check it out. You'll cross at the Blue Water bridge in Port Huron by taking I-94. If you don't have to go through Windsor, I wouldn't. You'll hit a lot more traffic in the city and general and Detroit is not laid out in a nice grid to navigate. It's lots of dead ends and confusion if you haven't crossed the border here before. (Not the border crossing itself, just getting to the crossings.)

I live about 12 minutes from the Windsor border and if I were going to Toronto or that area, I always go through Sarnia.

OK!! Sarnia it is!

Thanks. It does look easier on the map. :D :D

Get on I78 West follow it to I81 South, get off on Exit 72B and you're at my house!! We can go to Hersheypark!
Then, you get on the Turnpike/76 West and keep going until you hit cornfields.

Possibly......
We are leaving from P-town, so that route wouldn't be too bad.
What is at Hersheypark? Please tell me it involves chocolate!
We are leaving to head back on Wednesday the 21st.
OMG - I just looked at my dog calendar next to the computer - our specialty and weekend shows close on the 21st!! Guess I better enter before I leave. 8O
Of course there's chocolate!!!!
It's also an amusement park so there's rides and shows. It's pretty cool. Floofdog Jil got to go when she came out and she liked it.
When the other Jill came out, we went to Chocolate World and then drove down Chocolate Ave in Hershey which is the main street but she didn't believe me that the streetlights were made to look like Hershey kisses! :x

Here's where the girls stayed when they came for the grooming weekend. Comfort Inn (PA029)
7744 Linglestown Road , Harrisburg, PA, US, 17112 | Phone: (717) 540-8400 Fax: (717) 540-5553
It's 4 miles from me and about 5 miles from HersheyPark, right on the highway.
The public library was nice when I was there, too.

It was right on Cocoa Avenue.

But Mandy never offered to come see me.
Don't tease, Ron! People keep trying to get me to come up to shows in Mass and we might need a place to stay.

As for your Hershey trip, I think I was still in high school when you were here!!! :P
When I was there the library was new, but a free public library wasn't a new concept. ;)
Gee Ron - the edit to my title makes it sound like I'm mooching for a free spot to stay!!!

I also need route help (can you tell?) and other "insider" info that I can't get from maps.
Better?

I know - me who gets motion sick......

I want to make a disclaimer now - Chewie will probably be a mess, after no brushing for the week we are gone. :(

We are getting back Thursday night from NY, and leaving Friday morning for St Louis. Yikes!

Well, send him south with Gale and he can stay with me while you're gone and I can clean him up.

I'll just have to meet you and Nancy somewhere enroute to St Louis and hand him over.

I wonder if I can tie him to the roof rack? :lmt:

Seriously - work on the logistics. I'm using him as one of the dogs for Wendy to go over (did I mention that?  ) and he can't look like a pig.

That's Sybil's job!!!

Not last I heard, but he could probably save on some gas by helping pull the car

Can't you just bring him here to NY and then drive to ST louis?
Just an update. We left MN this morning at 0445. We got to Port Huron, MI at about 9pm. 10pm with the time change. We plan on crossing into Ontario in the morning (early start - before 7am) and stopping for a bit at Niagara Falls. Then heading on to NY - Newburgh area.

All the dogs are farmed out - what a weird feeling! :(
Family are stopping in daily to feed the sheep, horses, pony, cat, cockatiels and fish. What a project just to leave!!! 8O

Rain is forcast for graduation Sat morning - I hope they are wrong.
Gotta head to bed - I am beat. Had just 2.5 hrs sleep last night, and a couple hours in the Element this morning. I drove from before Chicago through to Lansing.......ugghhh! Lots of road construction!

More later. :D :D
What a day!! Hope the weather is nice and you enjoy the Falls today! 8)
Have a good trip!! Offer still stands for Hersheypark!
be careful dawn!! have a great time!!!! if you stop and see mandy...bring back some good chocolate!
