Tax Stimulous Check confusion and information

I am confused. My niece and her husband have been planning a well deserved vacation to Florida. The date was planned around the tax rebate checks arrival. Ashley just called me crying... She says that because they used Turbo Tax, and, those direct deposits were made through Santa Barbara bank-- their check will be mailed vs. direct deposited. That will delay the check by a month or so. They were supposed to leave on May 16th.

I called John and we are going to "float them a loan" ( which she doesn't know yet) but- I am still curious about the dates they will receive the money. We know we are getting a tax rebate- but we haven't been keeping up with the timing too well 8O I could look on the web page but I am sick with a stomach virus today, and don't feel like searching for the info. So- I came to the smartest people I know--- YOU GUYS!

Turbo Tax and the bank they used has nothing to do with anything. If they're getting a check, and they used direct deposit for their tax refund, it's going to be direct deposited to that same account. If they closed that account, then the attempt to direct deposit will be kicked back to the IRS and they'll issue a manual check - but no idea when.

Here are the FAQs regarding the stimulus checks from the IRS.

It may be they're not actually going to get a stimulus check because they owe money for taxes, child support, etc.
Snopes says that they'll be mailed out in the order of SSNs.

The IRS moved the payment schedule up.

 mine will go out 5/9

Sounds like she doesn't have accurate information. that being said I believe in the old saying, "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" and I'm not "spending the money" til I have it in my hot little hand!
I went to irs.org-- the website Ashley used. According to what I read- if you chose to have the fees taken from your tax refund- you will be recieivng a paper check. Below is the area I copied from the website. So- she was right, they will be receiving a paper check. I can certainly see the confusion in this. Direct deposit to me means - direct deposit. This is the first I am hearing about the exceptions.

Stimulus Payments are being issued on a schedule according to the last 2 digits of the primary social security number (SSN) shown on your 2007 tax return.

If filing or preparation fees were deducted from your 2007 Refund or you received a rapid refund, you will be receiving a check instead of a direct deposit. Please see the Paper Check section of the Payment Schedule.

There's a great big, yellow highlighted statement at the top of that website that says,

Hit the real deal for real info. www.irs.gov

.gov, not .org.
Can you post the link to the website, I had my fees deducted as well and find it interesting that there is no mention of that on the IRS website!!
Here is the website I used

But, that's still not because of Turbo Tax or the bank! ;)

BUT-- it is still rather misleading and confusing. For me at least. It makes no difference what program you used-- if fees were deducted then you will receive a paper check. That was not mentioned at first when they talked about "direct deposit payments" It pays to be informed, and neither myself nor my niece was. 8O
I hear you.

I made absolutely no plans for that money whatsoever. I figure the IRS is in charge of this thing...now way in the world am I going to "count" on it, and if it happens to show up, yippee for me.

Ooh, awesome! That's even better! I haven't checked for updates so this is a pleasant surprise. I hope I get direct deposit so I can just keep it and not tell James.

Hey--that happened to me last year, except it was Cam who kept it
I don't understand what they mean by "filing or preparation fees that were deducted from your 2007 refund." Do they mean some people had to pay fees to the government? Why? My son also used Turbo Tax, and his rebate check was scheduled to be direct deposited yesterday. I guess I'm just missing something there.

I also checked for our rebate and the site said it had no info, possibly because it wasn't scheduled for payment yet. (Which is correct, according to my husband's SSN.) But according to our accountant, who had to do the figuring for this when he did our return, we don't qualify for the full $600 because our income was "too high." If I remember correctly, we're getting back less than $100!!
Does it mean that you chose to pay your tax preparer directly from your tax refund money, rather than paying them up front or by your regular banking method?

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

Mine was scheduled for direct deposit on 5/9. By gum, I checked my account on line this morning and there it was winking at me. :excited:

I believe we are in the same boat so I haven't even looked into it.

My daughter is a college student (independent because of age) and made too little to qualify for the whole amount, although she worked 32 hours a week while going to school full time. That just seemed wrong to me. you would think a fair stimulus package would try to reach more than the middle of the income spectrum!
Woohoo, I'm in shock, we actually got ours today! It sat in our bank for approximately three hours, then got put straight to the credit card, lol.

Oh, you mean like to the people who PAID the money to the government?

How about just give a 10% rebate to everyone who paid taxes, wouldn't that be "fair"?

How about folks who earned $200,000 and paid probably $40 or $60,000 in Federal income taxes. Shouldn't THEY get SOMETHING?

Hey, how about this: Instead of giving the money away to stimulate the economy (most of which will probably wind up going to China anyway) How about spending the exact same amount on repairing roads and bridges, building solar arrays in the Southwest, wind farms in the northeast, tidal power in the southeast, research on cellulose based ethanol, ... investments that will be paid back over 20 or 40 years so we can make more investments in the same and get off the oil?

If I recall the stimulus package was about 150 billion? For $450 billion (According to Scientific American) we could have powered the entire country from solar power in the southwest, including a national power transmission backbone... how about just starting that project with say.... $4.5 billion? That would stimulate the economy, give a boost to the solar industry and be an investment in the US, instead of a trade deficit for Playstations.

Sheeeesh.
Man I still have a week till I should get mine. My boyfriends should of been deposited today but nothing is in my account besides my pay check :( Hope it gets there soon.

ALthough I do not enjoy paying what I do for taxes (pretty close to your $40k) I do think IF in theory it is an economic stimulus plan, lower income people are more likely to spend the funds on items that would stimulate the economy. I spend enough as it is - just ask my husband :)

Now the idea that giving people more money to spend will stimulte the economy is right up there with brillant Bush ideas
