Peeing on the new rug!

Baily, who will be a year old this month (if she makes it!) has taken to peeing on a brand new rug. 4 nights in a row now!

I don't know if she is marking it for some reason or if the smell of the wool is doing it. Right now we are back with the puppy gates and confining her to the kitchen. She has never been 100% good in this area (usually it is poop) but this is just infuriating. If it keeps up I'm sure that my husband is going to say enough is enough. I have an older girl (9) who is not a problem at all but apparently Baily does not learn by example.

Any suggestions other than keeping her locked in the kitchen (the next step is the crate again).

Thanks

I would have a sterile urine sample cultured - she may have a UTI and it may not be behavioral (although it would be quite the coincidence that it started when you got the new rug).

Is it carpeting or a rug? Did it replace something that was already down? Maybe by removing the old carpet/rug - some old smells were brought up and she's reacting to that. I would spray it with one of those sprays made especially for dog urine (with enzymes that remove the odors - not just mask them).

The other thing that would just be strange would be if the rug actually has a strong "wool" smell - she's reacting to that as though there was another animal in the house and she's marking her territory.

I would rule out any medical issue first.

Is she neutered? Will her cycle start soon? Sofa is not (She'll be as soon as her cycle ends!) and she started marking the rug at home too.

Try reinforcing the "Go Potty!" command and keep an eye on her so you can see when she is about to go, looks like the new rug is a variable that was introduced at home and she's trying to mark her territory again.

Kristen's advise is correct, just to be safe have her checked just to roule out that possibility, but it looks like it's a response to the new rug.
Mopsey, my little thieving OES, loved the carpets! She peed on them constantly! I couldn't figure out what the problem was! It wasn't medical...so I took alcohol and water (half-half) and washed all the spots where she has peed. I mean, I soaked the parts where the rug was soiled. She hasn't done it since! Hope this helps!
Big Ben had an issue only with one particular throw rug right in front of our back door. He never asked to go out, just used the rug instead. Took the rug away for a couple of weeks and he asked to go out. (Well, he just stood at the back door and stared at us until we opened the door.) Put the rug back and he peed on it again. So, we never had a rug by the door again. We never were sure why this happened, someone suggested maybe he was paper or pad trained before we got him at about 5 months old. I suppose that is a possibility...?
If you are having trouble cleaning the stains, mix 3/4 parts mineral water an 1/4 vinegar (sp?), put it on a spray bottle and spray the carpet. Let it work for 15 minutes, dry it with paper towels and then apply baking soda (Arm & Hammer Pet Hair Release for the vaccum does wonders!) over the stain. Let it dry, then vaccum. The stain will go away and you'll be happy!

That remedy has worked us great for Sofa's accidents.
