Anyhow, I am finally going perform my first wedding for my friend's Alexia and Quiler. The couple wanted to get married at the beach. We had discussed this last week and she said how she wanted a wedding on the beach. I said I can make that happen and explained that I was a Minister. I was definitely going to perform the ceremony when they were able to plan it. We had planned on doing the ceremony today at the Beach, but Quiler had to work so we were going to put it off for maybe another week. They had some really bad news earlier this week, my friend Alexia was given 6 months to live. She has Hodgkin's Lymphoma for the 2nd time in 3 years. In February she had a heart attack. They found out the heart attack was caused by a tumor growing on her heart and they just spotted a tumor on her brain. Her Dr said the Chemo is not working. I did get her in for an evaluation at City of Hope in Los Angeles. Hopefully she will be going there within the next week. Her Dr wanted to fight the cancer more aggresively with Chemo and Radiation, but her insurance refused to pay for it. Luckily her Dr said he would do the radiation for free. So we decided for legal reasons to do at least a small informal ceremony now and do the "show" wedding at the beach next week or the week after. They got the wedding license on Wednesday. Quiler is the father of Alexia's two youngest kids and he is currently of "illegal alien status". To make sure he can stay here after she passes, we need to get the ball rolling. The kids were both born here, but Quiler needs to be legal to stay and take care of the kids. I am going to be performing the wedding in Spanish, which is pretty funny since I don't speak Spanish. I did take 4 years of Spanish, 2 in High School and 2 in College. I have a wonderful ceremony picked out for the beach wedding with a "family" ceremony that involves the kids. Very cool stuff including a sand ceremony. I wanted to do something special and different for tomorrow, so I was wondering if anyone had ideas?? PLEASE!! Also if you could keep Alexia and her family in your thoughts and prayers, it would be very much appreciated. |

Wow! Wow! and Wow! What an experience this will be.
I have no ideas (just not clicking with creativity today ) But I wanted to say Good luck to all, and your friends will be in our prayers. Pictures please!!! |
What are you going to wear? |

Wow, they are going to need lots of legal help with this. Marriage does not insure a green card. He may have to go back to his country of origin for up to 10 years before he can be eligible for legal status in the US. We see these stories fairly frequently in the news in AZ. She'd be smart to have an alternate guardian for those children just in case. Good luck with the ceremony. As long as you share their joy, the ceremony will be very special. |
So the qestion begs to be asked........ why are you an ordained minister?? or maybe that is How?? |
The wedding has been postponed until Saturday.
Which gives me more time to practice my Spanish. And more time to prepare. Sue, I do hope you are wrong!! Alexia has 4 kids ranging in age from 7 months old to 9 yr old. She is naming Quiler the legal guardian for all the kids. So if he can't stay that means BIG troubles for her children. Her oldest son Joshua is special needs. He has Cerebral Palsy. He was Ryan's classmate for 2 years and has been his best friend for 3 yrs now. She has a lawyer so hopefully we can get this all taken care of. The biggest thing is getting Quiler to become the legal guardian for the two older kids. If worst comes to worst he can take them back to Mexico, that is if he is the legal guardian. Jill, I have no idea what I am going to wear. Something simple though..... I don't want to take away from the Bride. Ginny, Why? Because I could! I also thought it would be cool. I am a non-denominational Minister and can perform marriages of any faith. How? Online. I did it at Univeral Ministries. Lori, I am also the official photographer. There will be LOTS of pics. |
So can you do funerals and circumcisions
Have fun! |

Wow, what an emotional ceremony it will be. I hope that the doctors are wrong with your friend's diagnosis, how tragic.
I got my minister's license a couple of years ago too so I perform my sister's wedding. It was the best way to get out of wearing a bridesmaid dress. |

For the sake of your friends and their children I hope I'm wrong too. I mentioned this to Tim last night and he said - "things are different outside of Arizona". Even though immigration is a Federal issue, Arizona works with the INS to take a very tough stance. Since California is far more liberal, maybe they will cut Quiler a break. I was just googling this a bit and the controlling factors seems to be a)how the person came to the US in the first place and b)how long they have been here illegally. The worst case is a person who came into the US with no status and has stayed more than 1 year. If he originally had a work visa, and it expired less than 180 days ago, that's the best case. |
Hi,
What a wonderful thing to do for your friend and I'll keep her in my thoughts. I hope they have a beautiful wedding and things work out for them regarding immigration. Marianne Best wishes to all of you! |
They really need to get on his status. Technically, he can be deported this very minute and even if he was named legal guardian, he IS NOT LEGAL and therefor doesn't count in the eyes of the law and if Alexia passes away the kids could be placed in foster care rather than his care. He couldn't even take them back to Mexico with them because he doesn't have the legal standing to get them their passports and residency visas to live there.
They probably need to hire a lawyer who specializes in this. If he reports to the office in person the chance is there (it is VERY SLIM) that they could just grab him and send him straight back to Mexico. But their best bet is to seek some good, professional help to get everything straightened out in a timely manner. |

I know there's a hispanic joke in there ..somewhere about your roots. (ongoing inside joke) Good luck to them! I'm sure you will do great. |

Now that you mention this, I recall seeing this news story on TV about marrying to be a legal citizen. Part of the process after the couple is married is an interview process (to prove that they are actually married & living together) which takes place at the discretion of the governing agency. There were many cases about the legal spouse dying before the interview took place and the living spouse gets deported. I believe there are people trying to change the legislation, but they aren't even close yet. |
Alexia is picking me up now. So I will get more details from her and update later.
Ginny, no I cannot perform a circumcision. Not that I would want to either. But I can legally do a funeral and last rights. I would hope the two children would help to prove the cohabitation part.
Then again, it's the government... Marry them today, then have a fake marriage ceremony, then have the fake wedding! errrr let me rephrase that for the authorities: Marry them today, then have the marriage re-enactment and then the fake wedding party! (No fake marriages!) |
Wow--that's quite a story. I hope it all works out for them. |
Im glad that the wedding is taking place soon!! My best wishes and thought during such a bittersweet event! |
Okay, got some good news today. SSDI called Alexia to tell her they have approved her application. It has been 3 years since she first applied. She didnt realize she could hire a lawyer to help her out.
I told her that disability lawyers always take the cases for nothing... they don't take a case if they don't think they can win it. I had her call the law firm I am using. I believe she hired the lawyer on Wednesday or Thursday and she got approved in less than 5 business days. One less thing to worry about. She needs to go to the local office next week, so they can verify that they have all the correct info for her. She was told today that her insurance is not approving anymore Chemo. She starting bugging out, but I reminded her that SSDI comes with Medi-caid/Medi-care. So this is perfect timing. The Medi-caid/Medi-care should be retro active back to about 8 month ago. She was also accepted into City of Hope Hospital, and if she didn't have insurance that wouldn't matter. So she will be getting the proper treatments. They spoke with an immigration lawyer who happens to be very well known. He is a friend of a friend and is doing it for free. He does not foresee any problems with Quiler keeping all the kids. As for the older boys, they have duel citizenship, so they could go to Mexico if Quiler decides to go back. Also the lawyer said they could expedite Quiler's immigration status due to Alexia's health problems. Since the welfare of the kids is involved. Tomorrow we are shopping for a wedding cake. Deb, That is a great excuse not to have to wear a bridesmaid's dress. |
Congratulate the couple for me. It sounds like they have alot to handle, but continue to be hopeful. We are thinking of them all. |
We changed the vows for tomorrow's ceremony. Short and sweet.
I will be doing my part in English. But I will be saying one sentence in Spanish. We prepared the food today. For the adults we will be making a beef tenderloin. It was a recipe Alexia saw online and it looks like it's going to be delicious. The rub that went on the went smelled awesome and the topping was great. They will be married poolside tomorrow at 7pm. |
The Wedding was great! I left my post as Reverend to take pics while the bride and groom said their vows. (I was also the photographer) Boy did they get a great deal. I hope I got a lot of good pics!
I was told that the two sentences I did in Spanish, I did perfectly. I'll post some pics tomorrow. |
Congrates to the new married couple..Congrates to your first wedding..Hope everything works out for them.
I know who I might have to hire if I ever get married!! |
Minister and photographer - you are talented!
