This got to be the strangest question I've ever asked...yet

I moved in the new house for about a week. Everything is great...except for the unpacking part. But anyways, today I came home from work and my son told me there is a turtle in the pool 8O I went and looked. It is a big turtle. About 6 inches long and 5 inches wide. How did it get in there??? My side entrance is a wooden door. There is no way the turtle came through our main entrance or side entrance...:twitch: I called the landlord and he told me he didn't have a turtle. So... other than wondering where it came from, my question is...what should I do now? Can turtle survive in salt water? :lmt:

Wat kind of turtle is it? certain ones can .... our pool is a haven for turtles and Bullfrogs
The turtle is probably wondering..."I turn around for 1 week and these people just appear....I lock all the doors...how did they get in?" 8)

No helpful suggestions, but I would be very curious if you ever figure out the mystery of the turtle :D :D
Hi,

My sister had a turtle in her pond at her previous home. It hibernated in the cold weather and returned each spring. Perhaps it was hibernating?

Either that, or the secret turtle depositer visited your home and left you a gift. :? Hey some of you know about the Easter Bunny right?

PS - I think you should call him Ninja

Yes, some turtles can survive in salt water...we have many here in Florida. However, I am sure a pet store may be able to tell you what type of turtle it is. I know we have "protected" turtles here in Florida and yours may be protected as well. I am sure someone in your city can help you out with that.

Good luck!
Salt water? I don't understand.

I suspect it is a common box that someone raised as a garden snail predator. They overwinter in the ground and dig themselves out when it warms. I'm sure Mr. Turtle (or Ms.) needs to get out of the water! A board ramp would be greatly appreciated. Now the problem is the new sheepies in the yard, will they hurt Mr. Turtle? May be some barking times, but they can live together. Mr. Turtle would appreciate some food....cantlope or tiny bits of ground beef or chicken (think of snails without shells....just tiny bits of protein)

A knowledgeable pet shop will be able to tell you what type and the sex. Hopefully employee washes hands before they touch your new friend, pet store turtles are often infected bacteria.

Then again you might have a rare desert tortoise.......in which case it should be returned to nature..if any still exists in your area.
so cool... I want a turtle in my yard.

We have a salt water system on our pool - instead of traditional chlorine. Much better for your skin.

They don't swim. Is it alive?

If it is alive them it is a water turtle.
They carry salmonella.... personally I wouldn't want one in my pool.
well actually the salt system makes chlorine which should kill the salminella (sp)
hopefully its not a desert tortoise....if it is, its probably dead....as for turtles and sheepies.....panda used slim as her own personal walking rawhide......it took lots of training to get her to leave him alone....oh and dont leave the garage door open, they are quicker than you think!!

if he is still alive you might want to call a turtle rescue...(yes they do have them)...

I also think Ninja (thanks, Marianne  ) is a box turtle.
Ninja can swim perfectly fine. I checked on him/her every now and then and found him/her swimming on the surface of the water.

As for my four legs... Kelly, my GSD mixed is very concerned about this little friend. She follows Ninja around along the poolside and looks like Ninja is not afraid. He/she stretched his/her neck up and high stares back at Kelly from the bottom of the pool.

Clayden...my clumsy boy...proofed to be able to walk on water. He lost his footing twice when busy tracking Mr. Turtle. I don't know how but he somehow managed to get off the pool faster than falling in 8O I didn't even have enough time to make it over to "rescue" and he already got out. Every time he fell in and got out, he would come running to me (very proud) and his belly and legs would be all wet. :?

Hubby wants to keep Ninja but I am with Elissa... I think I will call Turtle Rescue Group but before that, I will go around and knock on my neighbor's door to make sure it is not their turtle.
good to hear you think it's a box. we have had several snappers show up in our pool!

we've always just caught them and took them a couple miles away (or they come right back) to a creek.

i hate snappers! but boxers are funny--they like to watch TV.
