Geneology

Do any of you do geneology??? I recently started this and have found it very addicting. Just wondering if anyone else has the bug and how far back in your family line you have got.

Yep, and it is addictive LOL, I'm at about the early 1700 for some of my lines and I was given some information taking one line back to 1475 but I want to check that all out for myself before I believe it  )
I have been doing it for a couple of year! :D I love it. I have two sides of my husband's family traced back to the 1600's in Virginia. Some further back. My side isn't as easy, but I have gotten some leads and did get to find a whole bunch of cousins. 8)
My mom and her cousin are very into it, and both are members of the DAR. (Her cousin actually works there). On a family reunion we had in the Smoky Mountains one year, they both had us trapsing through old cemetaries looking for relatives. They even stopped at some strangers house and looked around the yard and at the house because their great great grandma (or someone) used to live there!

I guess it must be addicting, huh?
I have a cousin who does personal family histories......she interviews a family member and writes their history. So she's into geneology as well. She has busted a lot of family "tales" about events. She has also uncovered great mysteries in my family........just who were they really.. :? :?
I have been having fun but I am so stuck on my mom's side of the family. I'm as far as my grandmother  seems my grandmother was umm married (or not in some cases) lots of times and other. Well I am stuck any suggestions. What makes it even harder is my family is from the UK. I have found this wonderful site genesreuniteduk but I need dates and thats one thing I dont have.

My big problem is my Irish side, and the names of Jones and Smith :D he died on the way over and she is only listed as Widow Jones and no one seems to know where they came from in Ireland.

there are many wonderful UK sites, some free some not

Here are a few

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ this is a great free site

http://www.familysearch.org/ another great one (LDS site)

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ (ithis one is pricey but it does have lots of info. You can join for only Uk, Canada,US etc or for all.

and if you know the area they came from just google the name of the place (like Petersfield,Hampshire, Hartings, Sussex )and family history and you might find something

Hope this helps you
Yes I love it, I have traced my family back to Italy, I have my Grandpas passport from when he came through Ellis Island. He was only 14 yrs. old and had 10.00 dollars on him. I have a picture of the ship he came over on and a copy of the ships log listing his name, height, weight, the town he immigrated from, and how much money he was carrying. I have went over to Ellis Island numerous times to do my research. I had his name put on the immigration wall, it is a beautiful wall there, and you had to show certain documents to prove that the immigrants came over legally, and honorably. I t was so much fun, I gave my mom the certificate that states he passed through Ellis Island honorably and his name is on the wall for her birthday 2 yr. ago. When the wall was erected Rick& I went back there to see it and I took a wall etching. Now I am trying to find any relatives I have over there, it is a tiny little town, not having much luck, any suggestions?
