rice; does it have any nutrition value ?

We are feeding our new boy (6months) on a white rice -veggie- meat mix, is this correct for a growing pup. The question is does rice have any nutrition value?
He is also having a little "Royal Canin nutrition suppliment for a junior dog, plus some scrambled eggs for breakfast. Has bags of energy and is almost full size at this age. As we do not wish to feed him on complete food and he likes rice with meat can we continue knowing his diet is well balanced and correct for a dog of this size and age.
Your comments will be welcome.

Rice has no nutritional value at all. It is good for sensitive tummies and post surgeries to get the intestines slowly working again. A complete and balanced diet for all life stages should be fed. If you wish to feed you pup a home made diet because you dont want to feed or dont believe in feeding a dog food, there are lots of vet recommended books that have recipes for home made diets that are balanced. Meat rice and veggies can make up part of a good diet but you need the right ratio and the types of veggies and in the right quantities. Growing puppies needs lots of calories, protein, carbohydrates and fats in order to not get mineral and vitamin deficiences. It could be dangerous to just feed what you think is right without consulting a vet. I highly suggest you talk to you vet regarding a homemade diet, especially for a growing puppy.
Much of the world lives on rice. It is more a carbohydrate source, not great nutrient density. For example: 100 grams of white rice has:

7.3 g. protein, 2.2 g. fat, 73.3 g. carbohydrates.

Calcium 24 mg, phosphorus 325 mg, iron 2.6 mg, potassium 100 mg.

A diet soley of rice won't be good for you or your dog. You'll need to supplement with meat and veggies. With pups it's also a good idea to add a probiotic to their meal and maybe some supplemental vitamins.
When I first started feeding raw I gave rice; but I have stopped that completely. Now it is mainly meat/bones/organs and veg. as the main ingredients. Along with supplements.
Hi Roger, I see you are in the Uk. There are lots of good dry puppy food, that will be fine for your pup. Years and years ago you had to supplement their food but if you go for Wellbeloved, or Canin, Arden Grange or similar he will be fine and you wont have to worry about what you are feeding him. :lol:I always used to feed my dogs like you are but honestly the complete is good.
Spacegirl.......right on! Lucky dog! And probably very healthy dog. When I've had mine on raw feed, they got no extra carbo like rice. Just organ mean, sometimes muscle, veggies, fruit, supplements and bones.

If I had just one or two dogs I'd do raw in a minute. At the time I had 7 dogs and it was a bit too much.
That is one of the main reasons I might not get a second dog; I can afford to feed her really well. But I second... not so sure. She eats 2lbs of meat a day!
