Sweet Chumley isn't doing so well

After so many great months with a happy, active, mobile Chumley, the past few weeks have been a rapid decline. She is once again struggling to get up and lie down. She's back to wearing the lift harness. She has a hard, focused, painful look in her eyes, even behind the smile she wears when she is out on a walk or being petted. And she remains (of course) completely incontinent. The worst part is that she has started barking (loudly!) and whining (incessantly) when she is alone or wants attention. I love her dearly but the sound can be maddening. Apart from her walks, which are now a struggle, she doesn't seem too happy.

I am going to take her to the Vet this week to find out if there is some good reason for this downturn. Toothache maybe? She keeps shaking and pawing at her head but her ears look clear. If there is not something treatable to improve her well-being, I am not sure how much longer I will let this go on. . .

Maggie, just by the way, is doing great. Superhappy, superactive, very sweet, good dog. She is really the best dog I could imagine. Both of them have completely won over my initially non-dog-oriented BF. He went from a guy that was reluctant to touch them (washing his hands after an accidental encounter) to petting, cooing sweet nicknames, making them sit, and giving them treats. It has been very cute to watch him melt.

Sorry to hear Chum's not doing so well.....
I'm sorry Val! :( :ghug:
Im sorry val :( :ghug:
OH VAL :(

Tasker (and I) send losts of hugs and love to Chummie!!!!!!
Oh, Val, how sad!   I met your former groomer in Philly, Jamie, at Mandy's grooming workshop yesterday, and we were both wondering how Chum's been doing. I hope the vet can determine if her cause for distress is something easy and curable.

I can fully understand what you're going through, since Drez is also completely incontinent and can't get up/down on her own either. But there is no pain in her eyes, only sparkle and big smiles, as usual. We also don't know how much longer we can let this go on.
BTW - did I see a mention of a BF? Details, details!
Give Chum a nice ear rub from me (as long as it doesn't hurt him of course!)
Oh, Chum! Poor girl. I hope it's an easy fix, but you've given Chum such an amazing life no matter what.

Yes, and details on the BF. Is that why we don't see you around here as much as we used to? 8)
I've had Chumley on my mind for the past couple of weeks and keep meaning to PM you and ask how she's been doing. I hate to hear that she's not doing well. :( She's such a sweet old lady. Please do let us know how things go at the vet. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it was a simple as a toothache??

Super glad to hear Maggie's doing well. We're missing hearing about her adventures. We need some new pictures. :)

Please share what's new with you (and of course the new BF! :) )
Val,

sorry to hear about sweet chumley! All good thoughts are with her...give her and mags kisses from us!
Oh Val,

I'm sorry Chum is not feeling well.. hopefully it is just a toothache, I think of the girls often... I always smile when I see Maggie pictures.

Holding you to your "mention of a trip to Nova Scotia".

Good thoughts for Chum.

I'm so sorry, Val :( We haven't heard from you in a while so I was getting worried.

On another note, who's the new BF??? It's interesting seeing a non-dog person become a dog-person (my hubby too).
Sorry to hear about Chumley, sending prayer's that it's something minor.
I am sorry to hear about Chumly. Please let us know what the Vet says.
Poor Chumley.
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Oh, I am so sorry to hear Chum's not doing well. :( I really hope you get some good, or at least decent news at the vet appt.
I hate to think of her in pain, and not able to get better.
I just love this picture of her from last year at Sheepeipalooza -

:ghug: to you and Chum - and Maggie of course.
Sorry to hear of Chumley not feeling well, hoping all goes well for her
Here's hoping this is just another bump in the road for our dear Chumley. "Our" because she has won our hearts with her courage and antics.........I always think of her when I see a Honda Element....."is Chummie lurking inside there???"

susan
Sorry to hear Chumley isn't doing well. I hope you get good news from the vet, but if not........ you have many friends here to lean on.
:( Willoughby sends hugs to Chumley. Percy and Edwina also send cat purrs. :ghug:
I'm so sorry to hear that Chumley is having a difficult time.
I hope the vet can find the cause and fix her right up.
Hugs to both you and your sweet girl.
:ghug:

Isn't it funny that sheepies can take a -dog person
and turn them into a +dog person :)
OH NO, this is terrible news...

My heart is breaking for Chumley... I :hearts: Chummie!

You'll figure out and do the right thing, Val, you always have been right.

Extra rubs to the pups (and a little scratch behind the right ear for Chummie from me, please), and a big hug for you.

sigh
We're keeping our paws crossed for Chumley, hopefully it is something minor that has her not feeling so well.

Give both girls a hug from us please!
Val,

How sorry I am to hear that Chumm is not doing well. You have given Chumm a great life, and , I know you will make the right decison in regards to her care this time as well.

Big - Big hugs to all of you! Please let us know the outcome at the Vet.

And- while my main concern is Chumley-- like the rest of the group , I am anxious to hear about the BF!

Lori
Poor Chummie. Both you and she have worked so hard on keeping her healthy and happy! I will keep my fingers crossed that the vet can come up with a simple solution.
Mojo sends big hugs to Chum. Hope she feels better soon.
Thats too bad. :(
Val, I am so sorry that Chum is not feeling well. I am in the same boat with you and Chris with my Titus right now. He is having problems with getting up and sometimes just cannot make it to the door before he has an accident. He looks absolutely embarassed when this happens too.

:hearts: :ghug: To you all. I will keep you in my thoughts.
Val, I'm so sorry to hear that Chummie's health is declining. She's beat the odds before...

Big hugs to you, Chummie and Maggie. We're sending positive thoughts your way.

:ghug:

Nita, Nelson & Sassy
I too, am so sorry to hear that sweet sweet chummie is not doing well. I hope she can get some relief whatever that may be. My thoughts are with you and your dogs.
Give her some gentle hugs from us in FL - we love Chummie and hope she gets better quickly. :ghug:
Big hugs to Chum, so sorry that she's not doing well Val.
I'm sorry to hear about Chum Hope she can get some relief and feel better soon :ghug:
Val,
I am always so hesitant to read a thread like this....Chumley is such a great, stoic lady that has come through so much.

I certainly hope this is just a small bump in the road, but if it is a bigger hill I know you will make all the right desicions...for her sake...as you have done all along.

Hugs
Hears hoping this is one of those reminder bumps in the road - so you don't forget to appreciate the good times.

The adventures of Chumley and Maggie still make me smile. Wait, maybe Chum has decided it time for another roadtrip?

Positve vibs for all of you!
Valerie,

Hope Chumley pulls through once again. She has always been such a strong, willed girl. I got my fingers crossed that everything turns out okay.
I'm sorry about Chumley. :( Hopefully the vet will find something easy to treat and can help with her discomfort.
Hi Valerie,

New beau? You'll have to tell us all about him on another post perhaps?

You and your girls have been on my mind a lot lately. I'm sorry Chummie is having troubles and Ron is right you always know what's best for her.

All of us have grown to love Chummie and her fighting spirit. I love her so much! My boys are sending her sloppy sheepie kisses and Maggie too.

Marianne
Val,

Chummie has a piece of my heart. You and she are in my prayers!
Val
I am so sorry about Chum....
At least she has you to be her gaurdian and take care of her.
You are in our thoughts
Kathy
Sheepie Hugs to you all, sorry to hear about Chum. :(

It really does.

Thanks everyone for such warm support. It means alot. It is getting alot harder fast. She is so restless at night -- and makes her distress well known to the entire neighborhood. Her bark is so loud and raspy and sad. And she looks so miserable. But I haven't given up on the possibility that she could pull through again. Unfortunately, I have a lot going on this week so I haven't managed to get her to the Vet yet. But I will.

Lisa and Betsy - I am so sorry that you are going through this too.

Chris -- I am so glad Drez still has her sparkle. That's a very good indicator (I think) that life is still worth living.

As for my BF, he is fabulous. I don't like to say too much about him online due to a situation with his ex. . . He's fun and nice and smart and warm and cute, and so on. He has just about every quality I value. The more time we spend together, the more I enjoy being with him. I am very happy. . . and that's probably why I haven't been online as much. I'll say more in chat at some point. . .
I am so sorry to hear about Chumley, I hope it's just a bad tooth. I'm glad you have a new friend  Please be sure to keep us posted about your special girl chummie
Val, I just got back from vacation a few hours ago and I'm catching up-- I was looking for your post as Las Vegas Sheepie Lover told me that Chum wasn't doing well when I saw her a few days ago. Run with the toothache idea first. We had a very similar situation with Lucy about 4 months before it was her time and a good tooth cleaning/plaque removal really did help her pep up quite a bit. It helped her appetite a lot when (no pun intended) it was like pulling teeth to get her to eat. I wouldn't say it was like night and day but when you have a dog that you're already doing so much for and watching so carefully, you'll see a difference immediately.

It's the worst going through this, I feel for you guys. I really hope something simple will give her (and you) some relief.
I missed this thread, but it definitely makes me sad to read. Big hugs to you and Chumley. Hope she gets some relief as she has already been through so much, and I agree she is so strong. She wants to keep her mommy happy! I'm excited you have someone who sounds very special in your life right now. I love hearing any detail (you know that!!) :D
How is she doing now?
Hows chum val ? :)
Ups and downs. . . She mostly looks sad. She still loves to greet people and wants to go on walks though so I take that as a good sign. My sister is moving here in a few weeks and she begged me not to make any final decisions until after she is here and can spend some time showering Chum with love. Will be nice to have that support. Thanks to all here who have sent encouraging messages. It helps.
Val, I'm sorry to hear about Chum :( . Big (and gentle) hugs to both of you, and Maggie as well.
Sorry that Chumley isn't feeling well. Hope she feels better soon

That's wonderful! It'll be so nice to have her close by. :P

Yes it will! She and her husband are great plus it will be nice to be able to spend more time with their 2 little boys too. They are all super excited about Boulder. Even their ancient pug has a new look of enthusiasm. I haven't seen him look so curious in years (if ever).
Is this the relative that lives in the mountains? Thought you had someone up around Vail, Steamboat, or some place. Or is the family coagulating again? That would be nice. Living there....does one ever tire of the views: Flatirons, Indian Peaks, Long's Peak........sigh.

Sorry about Chumley.....being older and in pain. Keeping her mind occupied helps. Glad she still has some enjoyable activities.
Val,

So sorry to hear about sweet Chum. Its so hard as they age and to watch things go downhill. I remember when poor Taylor was getting older and his unexpected death.

Its good news that your sister is moving closer. Helps to have someone to lean on and bounce ideas off of.

Thinking of you and sweet Chum.
I am not actually sure I can't wait the several weeks til my sister gets here. It is an open issue day by day. I am hoping more time outdoors will help for both of us. I hate to see Chum sad and struggling and the trajectory is one-way at this point.

My sister is moving here from Santa Fe. I also have a cousin who lives at Vail. For us former east-coasters, it is really nice to have family so close. I really hope I can someday convince my brother and his wife to move here. . .
I'm so sorry, Val. I know there's nothing worse than having to watch her struggle and scramble to get up. If you're like how I was with Lucy, you're up trying to help her every time, too so you never wind up sitting still for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time! I never minded doing it but it was the fact that she needed help and to see her so helpless that wrenched my heart. It's the hardest thing when you know you're doing or have done everything you can and you can stop it from happening.

Hugs from all of us, especially Bear because he misses his old lady, too (and because he gives the best hugs-- Clyde's are wet). :ghug:
Sister leaving the City Different for the City Weird..........lateral move.

Of the two, I'd do Boulder too. A lot more trees, LOL!

Exactly! Well, except that sometimes I do actually mind it. It is awful to feel like I am getting frustrated but the pee and poo are everywhere and always. It is really exhausting.

I did figure out what was causing the headshaking. I shaved her down today and discovered her head and neck are covered in flea dirt. I gave her a bath and applied Frontline. I hope she will start feeling a bit better soon.
Fleas may be causeing the distress resulting in loss of controll.

Yeah, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't really exasperating sometimes. Of course she couldn't help it so I was never mad at her, just tired. I'd find myself pleading with her (and, of course, she was deaf), "Lucy, please, please just stay there. Don't try to get up." But she always did. I had to admire her tenacity but it got tough.
OH VAL, I hoped things were a bit better. I am sorry, hugs for you all!!
So sad, hope Chum feels a little happier. How long is it until your family come to stay?
Val,

I've been so sad about Chummie, I couldn't even respond.

I really admire all that you've done for her. I only had the situation with Katrina for a week and at the end I was completely, emotionally and physically exhausted.

You have given Chummie a life that many could only dream about and should be commended. You believed in her against all odds and have continuously went above and beyond.

You should certainly trust yourself to know what's best! Great support is being sent your way.

It's a vicious circle, you're frustrated because you're tired and you probably don't sleep well. Is there anyone who could watch her for a few hours so you could have some time just for yourself? Even a long bath and nap would lift your spirits a bit :ghug:
