Puppy food-Fat and Protien

I have read alot of the advice on this forum. I had the opportunity to run into the Nurtro Rep at Petsmart last week and we were talking about different foods. She said that all premiums foods are the same but that with a large breed puppy you want to limit their protien since if they get too much they grow to fast and have a greater chance of getting Hip problems. I was leaning towards Nurto Max since it was High protien and lower fat. She told me that Nurtro natural Choice was the best they had. I seem to remember alot of recommendations of that food due to sensitive stomaches and less and better poops. She also said that any dry food under 13% fat is ok. Pro plan LB Puppy and Iams LB Puppy both have higher protiens and higher fats.

What are your opinions of the protien fat ratios?

Nutro Ultra is actually their premium food. The Natural Choice,. I think, is the bottom of their three (Nutro Max being the other). That being said, we always had great results with Ultra. It's on our rotation.
Ultra has 30% protein and 15%fat Is that not alot of fat and too much protein for a large breed dog?
I actually don't agree with the whole theory of low protein, especially not that low, for puppies. In my opinion oes are not a large enough breed in most cases to warrant regulating their growth unless a) you know your puppy is going to be a bigger oes, ie 80 lbs or more, or b)you know your puppy has the potential for HD

HD cannot be prevented by regulating growth,it is genetic. Your dog will either have it or not, but if it does regulating growth can prevent symptoms for longer and make it easier on the dog. Preventing HD in any breed is best done by certifying breeding dogs at the appropriate age, and only using the best to reproduce. It is believed to also be polygenic (meaning multiple genes contribute) and autosomal recessive (meaning a dog can be a carrier of the genes but not have the condition and still pass it on to offspring)

Dogs need protein. Here is one article for an interesting read about protein and dogs...

Here is another article which cites more info re HD, and states "We have yet to see a study that links an increased incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs fed a normal diet of commercial puppy food versus a specialty diet formulated for just large breed dogs."

There's actually a large breed puppy formula, I believe. I wouldn't worry too much abut the levels too much. They aren't drastically different enough amongst the foods to worry about unless you were having problems already and your vet specifically suggested it. I think the number one concern is to pick a good, quality food with meat and whole grains as its top ingredients, no corn or fillers and it agrees with your dog. Do that and you'll be just fine!
