http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0393735/ Tim Allen will be the the voice and human form of the title OES, let's hope something half decent can come out of it. Not much actual details yet, but one can assume that there'll be boatloads of OES related merchandise come next year. |

On one hand i am excited to see the movie but on the other it's "bring on the backyard breeders cause everyone wants a shaggy dog" kind of thing |
I agree Isabella! All the more reason we need to educate everyone to the hazards of irresponsible breeding programs! OES are wonderful - but they are NOT for everyone! Selecting a responsible and ethical breeder is critical - because not only do they breed for health and temperment first and foremost - but they also screen out the impulse buyers who have no idea what they would be getting themselves into.
I was told the Shaggy Dog remake will actually feature a Bearded Collie for the parts that aren't the computer generated "shaggy dog". Either way - the Shelters & Rescues will be overwhelmed with "shaggy dogs" a few months after this movie release! Several of us have pleaded with Disney to promote responsible breeding programs, etc. with the release of this movie - but I doubt they've lsitened! Kristen |
Yes- you'd almost be better off contacting local media, or urging high powered local shelters- such as the humane society, to urge people to not impulse buy. I do remember a few public service reports when 101 dalmations came out, that were to this effect. Unfortunately people have a tendency to see an animal on screen and think "oh that "Lassie" or "Benjie" or "Toto" just has to be the dog for me- just look at how cute it is!"

When the time comes, I was thinking about placing an ad in the Pet Section of our local paper referring people to OESCA for breeder referral and to learn more about the breed (as well as to NEOESR for Rescue).
The Bernese Mt Dog club does this every now and again - I'm not sure of it's effect on people - but I've noticed it! Even if it persuades one person to research a breeder more carefully - it's worth it! |
I may be way off here, but I thought they were using a Powlish Lowland Sheepdog this time around? I heard this was coming out awhile ago, I LOVE this movie.
I too am a bit afraid it will create another dalmation epidemic...poor Dals' , a great dog, but so many are abandoned. People have no idea on the upkeep for a sheepie. At least knowing in advance we can inform the public to think twice before picking one up. |
They are still casting for this movie so there is some time before anything really happens. There is talk that they will not be using an OES for the movie but people will still associate the breed with the title from the last one. |
Disney is using Bearded Collies for this movie |
I guess no matter what they choose, I've still got the Shaggy dog since I've got my OES and my Bearded Collie. Though not the same as the original, Bearded Collies are awesome, beautiful, obedient dogs and will probably be great in the movie. But you are all right, they too are ridiculously cute dogs and it'll be hard for people not to want to run out and get one right away. It's sad because I love seeing my dogs in movies but I do know how it makes people want them and for the unprepared owner, the shedding and upkeep alone with my 2 is a full time job! There's not a single item of clothing that I own without long white, black or gray hair on it! It's a way of life for me (and probably all of you too) but it's not for everyone.
I switched my avatar so everyone could see both my kids since Lucy hasn't made an appearance yet |
I hope I get mine soon then - before everyone goes insane and gets one from half crazed backyard breeders trying to make a buck. |
Im just thinking about all the cute sheepie stuff that will come out once the movie is released .A piglet riding a sheepie would be da bomb for Samantha!!!LOL!! |
I found that this started filming in November. Tim Allen will be funny, but I am looking foward to whatever part Craig Kilborn is playing |
This has nothing to do with this post, but El Gato I love your new little avatar. I loved the Little Mermaid when I was little simply for Max. |
I'm excited to see the movie, and to buy sheepie stuff, but it also worries me that there will be a sudden demand for sheepdog puppies, and that is never a good thing for any breed. I like what a lot of breed clubs have done when their dog takes a sudden rise to popularity... they post a main page that says "Are you SURE you want a _insert breed here_" and then list the worst things about the breed, the reasons not to get one, the reasons they are given up to rescue etc.
I would never want to discourage people who are truly ready for a sheepie, but just those who impulsively decide because of a movie or a toy etc. |
I told my vet about the remake and she has become very concerned. (Mainly becuase we are so close to LAncaster County and all the puppy mills there.) I'm not sure what actions they are taking but she said that they were going to start doing some work on it(?). I know that they did a lot of breed education that coincided with 101 Dalmations and that they used to be the vet for the local humane society. Maybe they are teaming up again. |

That's when I first saw OES - after that I remembered wanting one for a very long time. I didn't even think about it until about a year ago when I was looking online and took a survey - the OES matched my top ten dogs. I started doing research and just fell in love with the breed for it's own sake - then I saw that picture of Max and I was like: Oh yeah! Max was an OES wasn't he? After coming here and listening to all the stories I love them even more. They are so fluffy cute and hyper. I can't wait to get mine. |
Thanks. Little Mermaid is a classic.
Outside of buying it on eBay, I believe the next opportunity to buy the DVD (when Disney takes it out of the "Vault") is in 2006. |

There was a long discussion about this on the bearded colie listserve a while back. There is some concern that the moive will affect the breed.
Again, Disney went with Bearded Collies for the roll. Disney used six dogs for the part each doing different actions. According to the disney website, the movie is due out March 2006 |
